    John Collins:

One last try.  Under C:\ I have currently PMAIL and PMAIL2.  PMAIL subfolders include MAIL and Programs.
PMAIL 2 has DEFAULTS, MAIL and RESOURCE

PMAIL 2 was in the old PC.

    John

PMail is the new single user setup.  The program is in pmail\programs. The pmail.usr file should be at pmail\mail and there should also be a admin directory with a pmail.ini and folders. If you run pconfig.exe from pmail\programs yuo should see pmail\mail\~8 for thye home and new mail directory path.

PMail2 is the old single user setup.  The program is in the pmail2 directory. There is no pmail.usr file and the mail and folders are in the pmail2\mail directory. If you run pconfig.exe from the pmail directory you should see pmail2\mail as the home and new mail directory.

Here's a step-by-step assuming the current directory is d:\program files\pmail  and you want to move to c:\program files\pmail. It also assumes this was a v4.x version.  If you are using something that was installed much earlier then use c:\program files\pmail for the program directory instead of c:\program files\pmail\programs.  I am not going to keep typing c:\program files over and over so ..\ means c:\program files\.

    1.    Run pconfig.exe from d:\..\pmail\programs and note the home and new mail directory setting.  It should be either c:\..\pmail\mail or c:..\pmail\mail\~8.

    2.   Copy d:\..\pmail to the c:\.. directory.  You should now have a c:\..\pmail directory.  You are trying to ensure that the new directory and drive letter is the same as the old.

    3.   Create a shortcut pointing to the winpm-32.exe file in the c:\program files\pmail\program.

Now when you run WinPMail it will look in the c\..\pmail\programs directory, file the pmail.cfg file, read this file to get the new mail directory, go to that directory and try to open the pmail.ini file.  If you get a request for a user name then you have a pmail.cfg file that dorect not point to the correct directory. You run pconfig.exe from the same directory as thye program to reset the paths so that they point to the proper mail directory.

When I run pconfig.exe I get the message 'windows cannot find pconfig.exe'

I'm using Vista on the new computer.

All bets are off.  With Vista there are all sorts of "Security" type things going on that probably will never make it possible to do a copy of a program.  When talking about new systems always mention you are using Vista so only people that use Vista will answer.

Thanks Thomas.  I did try to get XP on the new PC but couldn't.  Oh well, it's been fun and I'm grateful to all of you.

     Best wishes,  John

I just found ipconfig in PMail programs.

I clicked on standalone configuration and it says Home Mailbox: C:\PMAIL\MAIL\~N

    New Mailbox:C:\PMAIL\MAIL\~N  (the same)

I copied C:\..\pmail to the c:\.. directory.  Put in a short cut.  None of the old files have appeared when I open Pegasus

Use Help | About Pegasus Mail I info and note the HOME and NEW mail directory spec.  These should be the same directory in your case.

Use "My computer" and check for the  *.PMM files and pmail.ini file.  These should be in the mail directory as specified.

If these files are found in c:\pmail\mail (old setup) then the spec should be c:\pmail\mail.

If these are found in c:\pmail\mail\admin then the spec should be c:\pmail\mail\~n.

Re: Moving Pegasus mail to new PC from old hard drive in caddy

Look Thomas, thank you for your untiring efforts to get my transfer of files done, I think I'm just going to have to give up.  I know you've done your best but I think I need an idiot's guide to do this!  Only the most detailed step-by-step expalnantion will work and how can you do that when you can't see what I'm doing wrong.  I have to accept that I shan't be able to see the emails I've filed - since 1997 would you believe!

You see I don't really know what I'm doing so I don't know if I've done it according to your instructions (obviously not).

At least I have the files even if I can't read them, so perhaps one day I'll find someone who can do it for me so i can read them again and use them.

     Thanks again.

One last try.  This is not moving it like you want but you should be able to read and copy the messages (not the folders) into the new installation.

    1.   Install WinPMail to c:\pmail. Do not use c:\Program Files\PMail, just a simple c:\pmail.

    2.    Run WinPMail and verify it works as single user.

    3.    Open the folder listing.  Use the top level menu Folders and select "Add mailbox to list".  Enter the directory name where the PMM files are shown on the hard drive in the caddy.  Probably something like d:\pmail\mail.   Use a name for the added mailbox of "OldMail"

    4.   You shlould not see a new mailbox at the end of yuor current folder listing that contains all of yuor old mail.  No Trays but yuo should see all of the folders.

Re: Moving Pegasus mail to new PC from old hard drive in caddy

    Hello Thomas & John,

I just went through this myself so I thought I would add another way to do Pmail file transfer from an old drive to a new computer. First I should mention that I was able to get a laptop with XP Pro by going though BestBuyforBusiness. They are also available though some of the big mfg's "business" websites like HP and Dell. I should also note that when I downloaded Pmail I saved it to a folder named "Downloads that I kept in "My Documents" which I also transferred from my old drive. I wrote this for myself as I found it the best for me and allowing all the setting to follow as well. I am using V 4.41 (Win32).

To move email from old hard drive to new computer:

*** YOU SHOULD ALWAYS MAKE A SECONDARY COPY OF YOUR EMAIL FILES FROM YOUR OLD DRIVE

BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS TRANSFER.***I did not need it but wanted to be safe.

1: Download Pegasus email client and load for multi-users.

2: You may need to create one bogus email account "folder" that you can delete later.

3: Open the PMAIL folder in the "C" drive and then the "Mail" folder.

4: In a new window, open the PMAIL folder and then the "Mail" folder from the old drive.

5: On the Pegasus mail program select "Address" then "User Management"'.

    6: Select "New".

7: In the "Username" box type the name of the first folder from the "Mail" folder from

the old drive. For the "Personal name" box I like to use the actual email address. If

I am not sure what it is I add it later.

    8: Select "OK" then "Close".

9: In the old drive, open the folder name that you just used.

10: In the "C:\PMAIL\MAIL" folder open the same named folder you just created.

11: Select all in the old drive folder and left click and drag to the "C" drive folder

and release. This will allow all your mail and your settings to be transferred into the running

    Pegasus program.

12: In pegasus select "File" then "Change user" and enter the name of the folder you just

    transferred and enter.

13: Now that your mail has loaded. Select "File" and "Network configuration". Copy your

email address and close out of this window.

14:Select "Address" and "User management" and the name of the folder you just transferred

and in the "Personal name" box paste the email address.

Repeat for each folder that needs transferred.

Thomas, I concede that your way is probably quicker but it's over my head still! I hope this helps someone :)

Re: Moving Pegasus mail to new PC from old hard drive in caddy

All I ever do is just copy the old PMAIL directory to a new disk, run the program once by double clicking winpm-32.exe, check all the mail etc is visible THEN run the setup for the latest version to create all my shortcuts, enable mail to links etc.   Seems to work perfectly for me every time.

I use a similar approach to set up new systems in a multi user environment at work where everyone's mail is on a drive that maps as X:
