If the program cannot handle folders with the same name in the tray structure, it should not allow users to create them. It is a bit much to ask users to "know" that all your names are unique when you have hundreds.

It is perfectly legitimate to have multiple folders of the same name but, as in the case of your copyself destination, it can be ambiguous. That's because the "Folder for copies to self = [Folder name]" entry (or entries if you have multiple identities) in PMAIL.INI only identifies the destination folder by it's name rather than the disc file name (e.g. FOL12345.PMM). Seemingly Pmail looks for the first line in CACHE.PM where field one matches the copyself folder name and obtains the disc file name from that line.

I think that David should be able to overcome the ambiguity fairly easily when time permits.

I feel that Thomas is being a bit OTT in that respect unless you have a large number of folders all with the same name. Even then, if you have a backup of HIERARCH, you will only need to find the correct trays for folders that have been created since the backup was made.  If you haven't got a backup and you had a reasonably complex tray structure then it's a long-winded job recreating it even if all your folders have unique names. Firstly you have to recreate the trays as they only exist in HIERARCH followed by moving folders into them: even with unique folder names you will almost certainly have to open some of them before you recall which trays they belong in.  Where there are folders with common names you will obviously have to open them to find where they belong but the extra work of doing that is fairly trivial when compared with the rest of the job.

I hadn't had a problem with this either (been a PMail user since 1995) until recently. It has happened twice in the last couple months and both times my backup had not completed (Backup Exec). The backup had some of the .PMM files in use and that caused several NAME_UNAVAILABLE lines to be created in the HIERARCH.PM file. I salvaged a HIERARCH.PM file from the day before (go NetWare!!!) and all is well.

I've had problems with "hierarch.pm". This appears to happen regularly if you add folders from other mailboxes.

Anyway, I simply exit Pmail, rename the existing file to "heirarch.pm.txt" and restart Pmail. The "hierarch.pm" rebuilds itself. Exit Pmail again, manually edit it to remove incomplete entries. Job done..!

Folder trays are the bigger issue (and topic of this thread). If you delete / recreate the HIERARCH.PM, trays are lost and the possibility of duplicate folder names is great [especially if you have numerous "nested" folders]. For me, losing my folder structure is not an option and that is why the delete / rename of the HIERARCH.PM file doesn't help.
