New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

I have had this problem for a long time.  I'm not sure that it ever worked.  I do have a filter for incoming mail.  Mail that is not sent to another folder by the filter is supposed to go to the New Mail folder.  It does not appear there.  In order to get it to appear, I have to close Pegasus Mail and restart it, or sometimes I can just close the New Mail folder and reopen it.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

    Thanks.

    Harry

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

If you have more than 700 messages in the new mail folder be aware that at some poing slightly above that number the new mail folder becomes unable to automatically show new messages as they arrive.  A folder refresh is required in order for them to appear in the list.

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

Do the new mails never appear in the New Mail Folder or only after a long time? In that case you should check the refresh interval for New Mail within the Settings > Extended Settings. But for me it sounds more like wrong filter rules.

Maybe you could post the content of your WINRULEA.PMC and WINRULES.PMC for a detailled filter check.

I use only filter rules which will be triggered "when closing the New Mail Folder" (quit Pmail). Then only the read mails will be sorted and moved into specific mail folders. Unread messaged remains in the inbox. This works fine for me.

Thanks, Brian but I only have about 35 messages in the new mail folder.

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

    Thanks for the response Joerg.

They never appear until I close out the app and restart it, or sometimes I can get away with just closing the new mail window and reopening it, but that usually doesn't work.  Mail that gets filtered to other folders always works.  I even tried making a new folder and filtering the new mail to it, and that doesn't work either!

Here is my WINRULES.PMC file, I don't have the other file you asked for -

    NoDisplay:New mail filtering rules

If I put the following as the first line in the filter, it still doesn't work!

    Always Move "New mail"

I will continue to do some more testing.  Your post filtering idea is interesting, except I like to sort the emails BEFORE I read them, so I can filter out stuff that's junk or not as important.

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

Part of the behavior you describe makes me wonder if you have an actual folder named "New Mail".  I say "actual" because the default new mail folder is not a folder like any of the others.  In your folder list, the real new mail folder will have an icon that looks like a green folder with a page sticking out.  The other folders will have an icon that looks like an envelope. None of those can ever work like the new mail folder.

New mail filter rules are applied to messages as they arrive into the new mail folder, moving or copying out to other folders. To temporarily disable all new mail filters make the first rule an "Always Exit this rule set".

Do you have any autofilters set?  If you don't think so, confirm by right clicking on any folder name (one with an envelope icon), select Autofiltering > Manage autofiltering folders.

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

    HTR:
If I put the following as the first line in the filter, it still doesn't work!

    Always Move "New mail"

First I had the same thought as Brian, that your "new mail" folder is not Pmail's standard inbox. But since I use the full german version, I don't see the standard english expression of Pmail's new mail but see only the german name. This you should check first. But anyway. Normally Pmail knows its standard inbox and a rule "always move "new mail"" is not necessary from my point of view. On startup Pmail is checking whether any of your mails within the standard new mail folder match any filter rules and move them accordingly. The rest of the mails which do not match remain within the new mail folder.

    HTR:
Your post filtering idea is interesting, except I like to sort the emails BEFORE I read them, so I can filter out stuff that's junk or not as important.

I don't like to always check different folders for new mail. That's why all of my new mail should stay in the new mail folder as long as I've read them. Only if they are read, the post filters (when closing Pmail) will be triggered and move the mails into different subfolders.

Using filter rules for removing spam and junk is not very useful. You always have to run behind the spammers for updating your filter rules. Therefore "Spam and Content Control" would be the better way. Especially Spamhalter is a very helpful software. With us, Spamhalter is running at the server. Since it is activated, all other spam filters and content control could be disabled.

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

No autofilters set.  The New Mail folder has the correct green icon.

If I put a command in the new mail filter to move all incoming mail to a different folder, it seems to work.

I can't tell for sure, but it seems that the new mail messages are retrieved, they just aren't shown in the New Mail folder view.  If I close the app and then restart it, the new mail shows.

    Thanks for the ongoing help.

    Check this setting:

Tools > Options > Advanced settings > Refresh new mail folder view every X secs

Re: New mail does not appear in New Mail folder

I think your filtering rules are the problem. Just for testing put a rule at first position in the ruleset, which disables the processing of the rules: "Always Exit". If you get new mails and they show up now, you found it.

I don't  know, if it is possible, to move mails to the new mail folder (which as Joerg and Brian already explained idsn't realy a folder - it's a summary of files with type CNM - your new mails - in your mailboxdirectory). But it makes no sense to move mails there if they are already there. What makes sense is to exit ruleset, if a rule matches, that should leave the mail there. So change all of your rules with "Move "New mail"" to "EXIT". May be ther parameter is called "leave ruleset" or "exit ruleset" in english version.

    bye    Olaf
