    POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

    Using V4.72

I have never taken the time to get the Verizon SMTP issue fixed, I just switched to another SMTP option. I've seen some nifty STunnel options, but didn't think it was important enough to go through the whole procedure for my needs.

Since AOL took over Verizon's email service, I can't even get the POP to work. I can see my verizon.net email when I go to my website based AOL page, can't get it to download using Pegasus.

I've tried everything that I could think of.....any suggestions?

    thnx

Turn on session logging in Tools | Internet options and see what error message you are getting.

The log files are in your mail folder.(TCP log)

If you post the log  remove your username and password. These might be Base64 encoded, but can be decided easily.

    Re: POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

It looks like the POP3 connection is being made via plain text Id and password in the example that worked. Also no port was being made, so it would be port 110 with plain text Id and password.  Does that work, if not you need to create TCP.LOG file to see which part of the connection process broke

    Re: POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

As of 4/8/18, here's what Verizon (AOL) is suggesting for settings:

     Protocol     Server Settings

    POP 3

     Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.net
    Port Settings   POP3-995-SSL

    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net
    Port Settings   SMTP-465-SSL

    How would I create a TCP.LOG file ?

    thnx!!!

Can you confirm that in your internet settings you have set port 995 and on the security page checked direct ssl?

Yes, it's set for port 995 and security Via direct SSL connect.

Increase your timeout setting and see if that helps.  It's currently at 10.  My default is 120.

I used to have it set for 60 seconds and it never connected, so I shortened it to avoid wasting so much time waiting for the "problem" message.

Leaving no stone unturned, I tried 120 seconds and it still didn't work.  ;<(

  • The log suggests something external is impacting upon the connection. Do you have anything running such as a firewall or av program that might be the culprit?

    Re: POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

I agree with caisson.  I appears that something is blocking the password from reaching the Verizon server.  A send attempt is made but 10 seconds pass without a response so the connection times out.

    Re: POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

I just added Pegasus to be allowed to pass thru the Windows firewall without any change.

No idea what else could be causing this. I routinely check mail from 4 or 5 other email servers without any problems.

Although I use Verizon as my ISP, I try not to use my verizon.net email address because of this problem, so I suppose I can live with this and just check the AOL website occasionally to see if there's any mail sitting there, although that seems a little silly.

    Thanks for trying!!!

    Re: POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

Did you log the test with the timeout set at 120?

I ask because in my last post I commented that I agreed with caisson that something was blocking transmission but I failed to register the fact that the username transmitted.  It doesn't make sense that something would block just the password.  So now I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the password and the 10 second timeout doesn't allow for an invalid password response.  Ten seconds seems like plenty of time but when grasping at straws...

Heck, multiple tries with an invalid password might result in a temporarily block.

Agreed, but I would like to see a log with the timeout set to 60+
