    Hi CEC,

It would appear that the Italian page is a day behind.  Try the following US Symantec download page:  http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html

It has the following update from today:

    20070518-019-i32.exe

    May 18, 2007

    May 18, 2007

    15.51 MB

Re: Norton AntiVirus detecting winpm-32.exe as Trojan.Dropper!!!!

Not that it has anything to do with Pegasus Mail, but... for those wanting to find the latest Symantec definition files, here's the start page to see what is available:
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download/md5-hash.txt

You then take the (path/)filename of the file you want and append it to this base URL:
    http://definitions.symantec.com/defs/

To read about the various files and instructions for your Symantec product:
    http://definitions.symantec.com/defs/update.txt

All's well that ends well. At least they got it fixed within 24 hours.

But the scripts of the various conversations with the Symantec Norton Helpdesk are really worrying. Obviously call centre employees with no knowledge or expertise and just a computer-controlled route to follow and a sheet of standard responses to give.

Re: Norton AntiVirus detecting winpm-32.exe as Trjan.Dropper!!!!

Fry's is having a big sale today (Friday, May 18) -- I picked up Trend Micro Internet Security, 3-user version for $40 with a $40 rebate.  Fry's had a table with Panda, McAfee, Kapersky, Norton NAV 3-user, and one other that I can't remember (but not F-Prot), all for free except McAfee (I think that was $10).  So this morning, I expunged all the Symantec stuff from my work machine (took 3 reboots to get it all) and so far Trend Micro PC-Cilin is working unobtrusively.  The machine is faster, but I can't say it's due to NAV vs. Trend because I also picked up 2GB of PC2-5300 memory for $60 (after rebate). Big Smile

Anyway, if you're in the USA and near a Fry's, you could pick up one of each kind of antivirus software for free and experiment. Just don't forget to do the stupid rebates. Tongue Tied

    Re: How to contact Symantec??

Hi Tracy, I can only empathize with you about contacting Symantec - and the writer who wrote "it's like bashing your head against a wall" is absolutely right. I have been a loyal Symantec supporter since Norton Utilities for DOS first came out but my subscription is fast running out, never to be repeated. They have become so big with so little concern for their users that a boycott is indicated. They will soon wake up with a bump when all their faithful subscribers depart en masse for other vendors' products. This matter with the Trojan.Dropper being a glitch in Symantec's programming, should not be taken lying down and I feel that a million protest notes to the CEO of Symantec would be very appropriate, since it was NAV's coding that has cost us money, the loss of data, the loss of time, the inconvenience of having to download a 15.xMB file (no problem for broadband users, but for us 41.2kbps dial-up users it's utterly unacceptable - only 40% has downloaded and I have been conntected for 75 minutes already! Just goes to show, doesn't it!), and then installing the patches, and reinstalling WinPMail for the umpteenth time. I think David Harris ought to take this up with the Senior Executives of Symantec and get Symantec to apologize to the world for this glitch. I am sure some people will agree while others will say an apology is not enough.

    Take care,

    Re: How to contact Symantec??

My name is Patrick Martin and I am the senior product manager for AV content in Symantec Security Response. As we have been managing this issue over the last 24 hours I wanted to give everyone an update and “close the loop”. First off let me apologize for the problem happening in the first place. False positive detections are always a bad thing and we take great care to make sure they don’t happen. But if it does happen we also act quickly to address the problem. In this particular case we received the first report of the false positive detection at approximately 3:30pm Pacific time yesterday and released updated Rapid Release detection signatures at 4:41pm Pacific time.  Fully certified detection signatures were then made available to all customers worldwide who use any antivirus product supported by Symantec at approximately 11:30pm Pacific last night. We have confirmed (both by our own testing and several posts in this thread) that the new detection signatures fix the problem. I have read all of the posts on this thread and I see that there is plenty of feedback for us in several different areas. I'm going to make sure that it gets back to the appropriate folks within Symantec. I don't manage those other areas but I know the people who do.

    Regards,

    Patrick Martin

    Senior Product Manager

    Symantec Security Response

    Thanks Patrick.

Good to hear that you will be passing on the disquiet expressed by many Pegasus users.

Patrick, thank you for dropping by.

    I'm now closing this thread.
