Pegasus 4.41, Bell Sympatico (Canada) and Comodo Firewall 2.4x

    Hi there,

    Newbie here!

Whenever I try to send an e-mail with Comodo 2.4 activated, I get a "6: Socket Timeout" message. As soon as I deactivate the firewall, the mails go through. I contacted Sympatico and there response was that they "only support Microsoft e-mail clients". I contacted Comodo support, who were MUCH more helpful, and their response was:

"Checking from my machine, a connection to smtp1.sympatico.ca shows that the mail server there is refusing connections. The problem is with that server, and not your machine. Either they are in the process, or have already, of changing their servers, or their firewall (and not yours) is messed up. You'll need to contact them to find out what's going on. You may need new server connection details, if they are making changes in their setup."

So, not much help there either......

Has anyone here had any experience with the above combination of software with Bell Sympatico?

    Thanks!

    Paul

I don't think that this is a problem with the SMTP Server, because you said it works, when you disable your software firewall.

Have you opened the necessary ports for Pegasus Mail in your firewall (POP,SMTP,IMAP, ...) ?

    kind regards

Excuse me, but why do you have a firewall installed, when you do not know how to configure it ?

I don't have Comodo, so I can't tell you the detailed steps, but you should read the manual and

look how to add new applications to the firewall.

    kind regards

The Comodo folks have already walked me through the process of configuring the firewall and they stated that it is set up correctly.

No. They stated that the firewall was configured properly. Sympatico gave me the settings for "Microsoft e-mail clients", which I'm pretty sure I replicated in Pegasus.

Despite all that, I'm still having the same problem.

If the Firewall does not allow WinPMail to connect to the server when turned on, and WinPMail can connect to the server when the firewall is turned off,  then the problem is with the firewall.   No matter what the people at the Comodo say, the firewall is blocking the access to the mail server and so the firewall is NOT properly configured.

Whether or not it can be properly configured is another question entirely.

That makes sense, however I was hoping that someone in this forum is using Comodo and could help me out, since neither Sympatico nor Comodo has been much help.

Even if they were using Comodo they really would not be able to help all that much.  You have a problem where you are blocking WinPMail access to the internet with the firewall.  The firewall should be able to be set to allow WinPMail do do what it wants without problems.  If Comodo  tech support can't answer a simple question like that then I'd start looking elsewhere for firewall software.

I agree with Thomas, is there any reason why you use a software firewall (will the windows integrated firewall not fullfill your needs ?).

Maybe you can tell us the FW configuration you use for Pegasus in Comodo.

    kind regards

Re: Pegasus 4.41, Bell Sympatico (Canada) and Comodo Firewall 2.4x

The Windows firewall only checks incoming traffic, not outgoing. Many of us like to see what programs are accessing the internet and keep a track on them. You need a software firewall for this, the Windows one is totally ineffective. Can't help you with Comodo I am afraid (but loads of people use it, I think we would have heard if it didn't work with PM). I use an early version of Zone Alarm, v5, before it went bloat and does all I need.

    The Application Monitor screen shows:

    winpm-32.exe, Range: 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255, Ports: 0 - 65535, TCP/UDP In/Out, Allow

    The Component Monitor screen shows:

winpm-32.exe,  , David Harris, Pegasus Mail for Windows, Allow

Looks fairly normal, is there any timeout setting?  Did you upgrade WinPMail? Many time an upgraded winpm-32.exe has to be reset.  Are the people at Comodo saying it is not a firewall problem??  The system works without Comodo and does not work with it and so  it's pretty much assured that this is their problem to fix.

Re: Pegasus 4.41, Bell Sympatico (Canada) and Comodo Firewall 2.4x

I assume that Comodo has some kind of "Training" Mode, so I would delete

all rules regarding Pegasus, then set the FW into Training Mode and then start Pegasus

and send/receive your mails. Everytime Pegasus connects to the Internet, their should be

some kind of Pop-Up where you have to decide wether you allow the connection or not. Allow

those connections and see what happens.

    kind regards
