Mercury and "User <name@xxx.com> not known at this site"

    Hi,

Recently I added a new user (colleen@xxx.com) to our Mercury Mail server user list. Whenever the user jake@xxx.com tries to send an email to colleen, the message bounces back and says "User <colleen@xxx.com> not known at this site".

Other email addresses not on the xxx.com domain can send to colleen no problem.

    The mercurys.log file seems normal:

    T 20080820 091414 4898722d Connection from 199.185.220.240
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d EHLO defout.telus.net
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d MAIL FROM:<Jake@xxx.com> SIZE=3974
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d RCPT TO:<Jake@xxx.com>
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d RCPT TO:<colleen@xxx.com>
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d DATA - 86 lines, 3974 bytes.
    T 20080820 091414 4898722d QUIT

Jake's SMTP server is with an ISP, not the Mercury mail server. So when Jake sends an email, it goes to the ISP's SMTP server, then it would deliver it to the server in my office running Mercury. When Jake checks his email, goes directly to the Mercury POP3 server.

    I am running Mercury 4.01b

Is there anything else I can check?  I've been running Mercury for years and haven't had this problem with two users not being able to send mail to each other.

    Thanks,

    Martin.

Did you either re-boot Mercury/32 or use the CTRL+ Configuration+Manage local users to create the user?   BTW, it would be very helpful if you provided real data for testing.

You also might try upgrading to v4.62 to see if this helps.

Hi Thomas, thanks for the reply.

Usually I stop and start the Firedaemon service when I add a user and it works. In this case, I even rebooted the computer. The wierd thing is that other people with email addresses in different domains can send to her!

One further piece of information, in my test setup with Outlook Express, when I filled in the  "Reply address" email (a setting I normally don't fill in for email accounts) , the problem went away.  The actual user is still reportedly experiencing the problem even after filling in this field, so I'll dig into it further.  If no joy I'll upgrade to 4.62.

If others have no problems with this account then this sound's like the address he is using is bad.   I'd look at the actual address he is using to ensure that there are no trailing blanks or high-bit characters.  FWIW, that's why it's best to post real data and not data you have munged.

Re: Mercury and "User <name@xxx.com> not known at this site"

It is working now, sounds like the culprit was needing to fill out the "Reply E-mail" setting in Outlook.

Sorry about the munged data, next time i'll do a straight cut 'n paste.

Thank you very much for your assistance, Thomas.
