    Switching from Courier... Help?!?

Hello, all. I hope someone will help this (fairly savvy but very time-constrained) new user.

For the past several years I have used Courier (formerly Calypso) because of its ability to check any number of mail accounts in one sweep. In reading the information on the Pegasus site, it appeared that Pegasus also has this capability -- plus supports the settings necessary to check Gmail via POP (Courier, which is no longer in development, lacks this capability) so I was very optimistic about switching all of my mail checking over to Pegasus.

However, I encountered two problems immediately:

     1) I allowed the setup process to pre-configure a mailbox for me. Perhaps this was a mistake? When I launch the program, the first thing Pegasus wants me to do is enter "my email address" -- as though I only have one! Who in this day and age has one email address? And I don't use ISP email. I truly would have no idea which of my dozens of email addresses to even enter there.

     2) Within that mailbox I saw no options at all for adding multiple email accounts. I tried checking the Help index, but in my stressed and frustrated state did not see anything that appeared to lead to instructions for setting Pegasus up to check multiple accounts (all in one window)..

Does Pegasus support the "one click" sweep of unlimited numbers of email accounts (once I have configured the client with the usernames and passwords for each one) or not? I really need this capability, including displaying all email accounts in one window, allowing me to filter incoming mail into as few or as many folders as I choose.

Anyone who has ever used Calypso/Courier for multiple email accounts in one "mailbox" knows what I mean. Can someone help me? Surely a program as powerful as Pegasus must support this capability, and somehow I've just been unable to find a "way in" to doing it. Perhaps part of the problem is trying to work from within that one pre-configured mailbox? I really need all my email accounts available in one big window, without having to hop from one "identity" to another to check them.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is kind, patient and knowledgeable enough to point me to (or walk me through) the instructions for setting up Pegasus to work in this way.

P.S. in case it's relevant at all, I'm running Win XP SP2.

The configuration settings to POP3 from multiple accounts is in Tool | Internet Options.  It is one POP3 definition for each email account.  If you have multiple email address hosted by the same host you will need to create a POP3 definition for each one.

You will also see check boxes that allow you to control the checks of each POP3 identity.  The "When checking for mail, check for all identities" setting is probably the one most important to you.  You may wish to click the help button while in that configuration window as it contains good information regarding working with and controlling multiple POP3 definitions.

    Re: Switching from Courier... Help?!?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Looking at the interface, it appears that setup is going to be a very lengthy process, given that I have about 40 email accounts that I will want to check, and various hosts require different configurations.

     A couple of clarifying questions:

     1) Is it "all or nothing" i.e. I must either check ALL identities EVERY time, or have them all set to individual checking? I am used to being able either check them all in one sweep OR just highlight the account(s) I want to check from the list in the right hand window. That way, if there are some I want to check more frequently, I don't have to wait for it to crank through the whole list every time.

     2) Can I have the filtering for all the identities go into a central pool of folders, for example 40 identities filtering into about 10 categories/folders, or does each one force its own set of folders?

Thanks again to anyone who wants to help make this more accessible to a person who has (apparently) been "spoiled" by Courier's interface!

A couple of concepts that you will need to wrap your head around.  1.  Pegasus allows you to have multiple identities.  These identities can have unique configurations.   2.  The POP3 definitions can be modified per "identity" though I don't know exactly how this works.  I only know that when you attempt to edit a POP3 definition you get a warning that it will effect all "identities" though there is reference to making a copy of the definition and editing that.  I may be worthwhile to download to manual and see if you can figure out how to associates identities with POP3 definitions.  Once that is figured out you would be able to create multiple identities then switch between identities to POP just the address associated with that identity.  Sorry I can't give you the specifics on how to do this.  Perhaps someone else can fill in the details.

FWIW, I use Mercury to POP 15 domain hosted mailboxes.  Spam tagging and a good bit of filtering is done at the Mercury level as well.

Yes.  All POP retrievals will come into your mailbox.  You can use new mail filtering rules to automatically distribute to folders as needed.

You don't need different identities to retrieve email from different email addresses. You can configure as many pop3 definitions as you wish for just one identity, which will all be checked in one go. However, if you want to send from different email addresses, it's best to create different identities. If you go to Tools, Internet options, Receiving and then click Help, you will find some helpful information

     Cheers!

I see. Yes indeed, each individual email address needs to be capable of sending, as a matter of course. I check emails (and reply to them) from a number of different domains, and also from a number of addresses on each individual domain. So a generic "from" email address (or even several) would not do at all.

Since each and every email address has to "behave" like a standalone email when I use the "reply" functions, does that mean that each address will need its own identity? And if so, can all the mail for all the identities still be checked in one sweep? Or just all the mail for one identity at a time?

     Thanks for your ongoing help!

They can all be checked in one sweep. Have a look at the two options at the bottom of Tools | Internet options | Receiving.

    Cheers!
