Pegasus Mail & Mercury

I am currently using Pegasus 4.52, and have been using Pegasus in the various versions for a very long time (decades). The most recent message in the "Copies to Self" folder is January 13. After that, no outgoing messages were copied there. I can't think of anything special that might have happened, and under options, "copy to self" is still turned "on", and is not set to "off" or "use last setting". Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In list mode can you right click in the Folders (folder manager window) on the Copies to self folder and see folder information? Does it show some deleted messages? Can you reindex that folder? Does that succeed or do you get an error message? If no error is all the deleted messages byte count now zero? Have you tried to reindex the folder? Report here again if it works or now saves copies to self or another failure then report back here for something else to try to recover and restore ability to save copies.

No error message, apparently reindex succeeded, but no apparent difference. Byte count for deleted messages is zero.

Thanks for the response. Any more ideas? I think I'll move the copy to self messages to an archive and see if I can start over with the folder.  (later) I tried this, the copy to self folder is empty, just doesn't work.

(still later) I tried re-installing Pegasus mail over the old version. I tried deleting the Copy to self folder. Pegasus did not create a new one as it is supposed to when I sent a message. The "Copy to self" box is ticked in emails I send.  I tried turning "Copy to self" off then back on.

Reinstall hardly ever is necessary and even then it does not overwrite existing configuration and data if found. Only the program files are actually replaced.

Something is not right for sure and I'd like to actually know about the current settings for current username and identity if one is being used. While they are choices in the GUI interface they are actually stored in the  pmail.ini file. Could you view your  pmail.ini file with a plain text editor like notepad and verify Copy to self= Y line is present and that the item to select a copy folder is or is not set to Y or N? Do not paste the whole file here, only the one line(s). If N that is normal but if Y then the other folder must be present and writeable for a copy to be placed. Use Help, About and Info button to locate home and new mail location. Use file manager or windows explorer to locate and verify that copyself.pmm exists and check properties and check properties on pmail.ini making sure neither are marked read only attribute.

I just set up a new user here and it all worked, including copy to self, right out of the box first time. I set Tools, Options information and was ready to test.

More data. I migrated from a Vista computer (32 bit) to a Windows 7 computer (64 bit) on September 21, 2010. Same version of Pegasus (4.52). Copy to self works on the old machine, I just tried it. It worked on the Windows 7 machine after the migration up until January 13 of this year.

I  just tried copying pmail.ini from the older Vista machine to the Windows 7 machine, and this did not fix copy to self. So I don't think that pmail.ini file is the problem.

Thanks for your help! This may be a tough nut to crack ... Are there some other files I could compare with the old setup?

Any chance that there's a duplicate folder of  the same name (if so it might even contain all your missing copies)? It might not be visible if Hierarch.pm is corrupted (for testing you could compare the number of PMM files with the number of visible folders (except the new mail folder), then rename the existing Hierarch.pm while Pegasus Mail is closed - it will create a new one after restart, you'll only loose the trays). Or do you remember any system changes on Jan 13th? Moved the mailbox, e.g.?

Thanks Michael. I tried renaming Hierarch.pm as you suggested, I saw no other "Copies to self". I don't remember doing anything special Jan 13th, but I might have moved some messages to similarly named folders in an archive subdirectory. But I've been doing this sort of thing successfully for years.  

 I do have plenty of backups, I can go back to the state as of Jan 13th and compare. If I revert I'm not sure how to rescue the more recent messages.

One thing I just noticed. In my old version, the Copy to self folder was kept in a file called copyself.pmm. It's not called this in the current version, but in trying to debug this I deleted and tried to recreate copies to self.

(later) I tried this. I composed a new message and looked to see what files had an updated time stamp. There is a file called FOL068E0.pmm that was updated and seems to have some recent sent messages in it. But this is NOT the file associated with the "Copies to self", which is FOL066A2.PMM. I feel like I am making some progress. I don't care if I lose two weeks worth of sent messages, I just want to get back to being able see messages I sent.

(still later) I found a workaround. I made a Copy self rule that matches every message and copies them to my "Copies to self". My"Copies to self" folder is now populated, but I don't think I fixed the underlying problem The sent messages are still also going to the invisible folder FOL068E0.pmm. Any hints about how to make that folder visible would be appreciated.

When I have dealt previously with an accidentally deleted Copies to self folder what I did was to copy the default file pair from the ..\defaults subdirectory to the program directory when winpm-32 was closed. Rename the heirarch file and restart to get the folder recognized. Doing it that way starts you  with a new clean original folder with just the included message. I don't know if you want to experiment with the procedure nor or not since you have a workaround and some saved sent copies. In your searches were you finding any copyself* files? In a normal working setup two pairs would be found. If you add another username those default files are used to create folders for the new user. Is your defaults subdir and contents totally missing?

Solution found! I opened cache.pmm in a text editor, and saw a nice list of folders and the associated files. I searched for the file name I had determined was where the copies to self messages were going, and discovered that it wasn't an orphaned folder, but was in fact a folder named for a committee I belong to which was the one and only folder that had auto filtering turned on. What happened was that I must have dragged a message I had written related to the committee into the folder, so autofiltering decided from then on to move my own sent messages into the committee folder. Of course all sent messages are from me, so the autofiltering took precedence to saving to copies to self.

As soon as I turned off autofiltering for the committee folder, Voila! Copies to self started working again. Jerry and Michael, thanks so much for your help! I learned a lot about Pegasus mail in debugging this. Unfortunately you didn't have the one bit of information you needed to solve my problem, that I was using autofiltering. Based on this experience I'd say autofiltering is a little dangerous. I had never used it before, but did so when I became chair of the committee, because I was lazy, I dragged committee members messages to the folder and from then on their messages would automagically be sorted. Then my own messages got caught in the web.

Every single missing "copies to self" message is in the committee folder. All have to do now is move them manually to copies to self, and turn off my workaround sorting rule.

Thanks so much for doing all the work and finding the solution.  I had exactly the same problem and the solution was that autofiltering for some reason was turned on for a particular folder and everything was going there.  Before solving the problem any mail that I sent to myself also went there.  I could tell when I checked my mail that the message I sent to myself was being received by the very  quick incoming message note at the bottom but then the message vanished.  Copy to self didn't work either, though all the settings were properly set.  Now that autofiltering for that stupid folder is turned off everything is fine.YEA!!!!!!!

Ditto.  I had the same problem with the same cause.
