How can I restore Pegasus Mail from a no longer booting hard drive?

A malware attack left me with a hard drive partition where booting will never again be an option.  I can't directly access the partition but I can still copy files off of it.  The partition had Windows XP Home and I now have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I don't know what version of Pegasus Mail was on the XP partition.  How can I restore Pegasus Mail under Windows 7 with the same data files, filters and settings, etc.?

Re: How can I restore Pegasus Mail from a no longer booting hard drive?

I noticed you post hadn't yet been responded to so let me pipe in.  I can't give you step by step instructions but I know enough to usually figure out how to get things working.  I would do a fresh install of Pegasus Mail on your new machine (do not install into C:\Program Files).  Once installed, use the User management function to create users with the exact same user names as you had on the XP machine.  This will create a new mailbox folder for each user.  Most of the configuration settings reside in files in the mailbox folders so the goal now is to get the contents of your old user mailbox folders into the new mailbox folders.  Below are the steps I would take.  Take extra care to maintain the integrity of the files on the XP drive until you get the new install working.

    • Close Pegasus Mail
    • Copy the contents of the new mailbox folders to a safe place in case you need to restore.
    • Copy the contents of the old mailbox folders to into the new mailbox folders overwriting any existing files.  It is important to copy just the contents.  Do not replace the new mailbox folder with the old one.
    • The pmail.ini files in each new mailbox folder will now be the old ones so will contain incorrect paths to the mailbox folder.  Open each with Notepad and in the following entries correct the path to the mailbox folder (they will be the same):

              Working home mailbox location =

              New mailbox location =

    •  Start up Pegasus Mail and see what happens.  You may need to do some configuration tweaking but if this works, most of your old settings should be in place.
I fully expect some of the more knowledgeable folks here will chime in and correct or clarify my suggestions.  One other thing you will want to do is update both IERenderer and BearHTML.  They can be found in the downloads section of this site.

Thank you, bfluet, that seems to have worked.  I've put off restoring Pegasus Mail for two years, I'm so glad to be back to normal!
