Moving from Win XP to Win 7 (hair tearing-out time!)

    Hi folks

I'm a long-time user of Pegasus (from 199?) and have never had a problem before in copying all my Pegasus files from the old PC to the new one.

However, on this occasion, with my new PC being a Win 7 Pro platform, I seem to have hit a brick wall. I've moved all the files from the old machine to the new one, retaining exactly the same mail box location: E:\PMAIL\MAIL-2\PMAIL\MAIL

Yes, it's a little unusual, but it's always worked before!

I've got the latest version of Pegasus (4.62) but when I go into Tools/Options/Mailbox location, I see the above hard drive path.

I've tried clicking on "Change now", which is supposed to close PM down and then restart, using the new location. Nothing happens.

I've tried checking the box "Move mailbox to the new location" and hitting "Change now". Again, nothing happens.

I've tried copying the files from the old machine to different locations on the new PC and applying the above settings, but with ZERO results.

Has ANYONE got any ideas about what's causing this problem? I sure would appreciate any advice and help!

    Kind regards

I'm probably missing something, but I'm not sure what you are trying to do.

Moving your home and new mail directories is best achieved by using pconfig.exe, found in your Programs folder.

If you are using the 64-bit version of Win 7 you will need a utility such as DOSBox.

    Thanks for your reply, Caisson.

Basically, what I'm doing is installing Pegasus on a new computer, which is a 64-bit Win 7 machine. I've copied over all my Pmail files from my old machine to my new one.

I then installed Pegasus, and changed the default mail box setting to where I have stored my Pmail files. It's at that stage where Pegasus doesn't do what it's supposed to do - i.e. close and restart to located the new mailbox location.

    Does this clarify the issue?

If you have performed a clean install of the the Program, Pmail probably doesn't know where the mailbox is located, hence the need to run pconfig.exe.

If the two installations are identical you could try dropping a copy of the old pmail.cfg file (in the Program folder) into the new installation.

    Thanks, Caisson.

I guess I'll have to download DOSBox before I can run pconfig.exe

Thanks for your help. I'll get back to this thread if I continue to hit a brick wall!

Either that or do the upgrade on the old machine and then copy everything to the new.

With that greatly altered path you showed it might be better to do new full complete clean install to the win7 machine and accepting the default c:\pmail path the installer offers. Then after install and test then only copy what you need from the old install or backup files but no configuration and settings items - just messages and folders and address book stuff. A lot of old stuff not even belonging or needed by winpm-32 may be stored in \mail\<user> and below and may cause  problems. When moving to a win7 machine nearly everything that has any  path  info will be different and nearly everything that has any reference to screen locations will usually be different with new screen resolutions of newer machines.

Either that or do the upgrade on the old machine and then copy everything to the new.

Which will only work if the same path and drive letter are available on the new win7 machine and is keeping with the win7 UAC scheme.

Some additional info if you go down this path.

Issues with transferring Pmail to a Win 7 machine were discussed recently on the PM-WIN@BAMA.UA list.

A successful solution was as follows:

"I dragged the entire pmail folder structure from my XP to my Win 7 system,
complete with the program.  I created  shortcuts onto my desktop and start
menu and edited it to start with admin privs.

    Worked perfectly first time."

This was tested by others and worked for them also.

As Jerry Wise has said you need to be going from C:\Pmail etc to C:\Pmail etc but probably more importantly you should note the reference to "admin  privs"

Re: Moving from Win XP to Win 7 (hair tearing-out time!)

Just wanted to advise that I took this path (copying over my entire PM 4 installation from my old XP system to my new Win 7 system), following the instructions caisson gave, and it worked perfectly. Had to fumble around a bit to find where the correct place to check for admin privileges was, but once I found it and verified that everything was checked off properly, it went smoothly.  Now I have to figure out whether it's possible to upgrade from the quite old version that I transferred (4.21c, dating from 2004 (!!) ) to 4.63...
