Accessing Mail accounts from a different PC/iPhone on the same network.

    Hi

I've had a quick search on the forums/net but can't seem to find anyone trying to do the same thing as me.

I have successfully set up XAMPP and Mercury/32 mail server on my laptop on my [fairly large home lan], and created numerous user accounts which I can access via Thunderbird of which I can send and view emails for each account successfully.

I have also set up an alias for a user account of me@localhost.com, and reference it to the IP address of [127.0.0.1].

What I would like to do is set up a mailbox on my iPhone so that when it is connected to my home wifi, I can see emails that were sent to me@localhost.com.

    Why I hear you ask!

I'm developing a website which will auto-generate HTML emails and I would like to preview how these look on mobile platforms, iPhones,iPads,BB's, Androids etc without having to open my SMTP port (I done that and spammed everybody)!

I have tried with the POP/IMAP/SMTP servers as localhost.com, 127.0.0.1, [127.0.0.1], ip address of my machine on the network, [ip address of my machine on the network] etc, but none seem to work.

I guess the same scenario would be how can you access a mail account from a different machine but still on the same local network, as I would imagine the same settings would exist.

Has anyone managed to achieve this, and if so how did you, I'm starting to get frustrated now.

    Thanks in advance :D

127.0.0.1 is the IP address for the localhost (the PC you're currently on).

You should be using the IP address of the server not 127.0.0.1.

me@localhost.com is not an address you can use outside your own network.

you need to use your external ip address - your phone isn't an ethernet device that plugs into your home network ;)

I guess the same scenario would be how can you access a mail account from a different machine but still on the same local network, as I would imagine the same settings would exist.

For this you can use your local ip address - 192.168.x.x or whatever.

Re: Accessing Mail accounts from a different PC/iPhone on the same network.

I have Mercury running on a server on my LAN, and access it from my smartphone using IMAP. I do that using the domain name allocated to me by my ISP, and forward the IMAP port on my router to the server. This works fine using the mobile phone network, but when I connect using my WiFi, the whole transaction is inside my subnet, ie, inside the NAT on the router, so the domain isn't recognised. So I now run a DNS (Posadis) on my server, and point the router to that - it replicates the DNS from my ISP but allows me to to point my domain name to the local address of the server.

AW: Re: Accessing Mail accounts from a different PC/iPhone on the same network.

Fore example it can be a problem with the security permission on yout mobile phone, some devices, like iphone have some trouble in the local network wie domainnames and DNS, so the phone want to lookup at the router ip für the domain... but thn the domain is loketed by your ISP, the phone cant finde them, check it with another phone, or another Laptop!

Just a thought, aren't there any specifications as to what type of phone we can only use in order to access this type of email?

Hi, you probably have your problem solved by now but ... you said you could send and receive emails with the different accounts but you didn't say if you could do it from different machines on your LAN. Can you confirm if you can achieve that or if you have your problem solved please.

    Yes, it's called IMAP.

Be sure to get a phone that does it properly :)
