    Messages disappearing

    Hi everyone,

I had an incident where pegasus locked and i couldn't get in (not the first time). I usually fiddle with the files until it opens, moving some until it reopens, putting them back where they were. But this time i probably did something really wrong because something is not working properly.

I'm updated to latest, uninstalled and reinstalled pegasus because updating didn't do anything.

Though i have disabled the spam filter because it seems not be working anymore, messages that are being downloaded disappear. There is nothing in junk /spam folder beside the few emails i had left there. There is nothing in the deleted emails folder.

The programme hangs and won't respond until it does when i downloaded the messages. And i just checked, i had 8 messages being downloaded, the programme started not responding, . When i went back, i had only 2 new messages and i have no idea where the rest are. I know they existed because i saw them being pulled and because i get all of them in duplicates (gmail and another box).

I had to create an account on thunderbird to be on the safe side. That programme does not delete, but pegasus is ordered to delete, except this morning, there were some emails that were downloaded properly by thunderbird that did not by pegasus mail, they are nowhere.

Anyway, i'm pretty sure my programme is unstable. What i don't want is losing my emails and the hierarchy, i am open to do a clean install and recreate all my identities, but i'm not sure how to make sure that i have only one mailbox and still keep all my emails ?

My folders are a mess, i don't know when that happened, probably when i switched to a new computer and did a pretty hatched job moving pegasus without changing anything.

I can print screen and show you each level within pmail if that helps. Any help and how to deal with this would be very appreciated.

    Re: Messages disappearing

In the downloads section of this site is a whitepaper detailing the data files to copy from an old install to a new one.  A new install would give you fresh configuration files into which can copy the mail data files from the existing install as per the whitepaper.  An exception for you might be the HIERARCH.PM file.  The guide says not to overwrite it, which is a good rule of thumb, but only if it would be too difficult to recreate a tray structure.  If you copy the HIERARCH.PM be sure to do it after all .PMM and .PMI files have been copied.  Be sure to keep the original files intact (backup, do copies not moves) so that you have them intact should something go wrong.

Here's the direct link to the whitepaper:

    Re: Messages disappearing

I'm going to ask a very dumb question, consider me enough educated to know how to fiddle with something to make it work again but completely at a loss about something that is probably so apparent but i can't figure it out.

My pmail is on hardrive E. The mailbox is also on E, i cannot install pmail anywhere else as don't have the space to move my programme elsewhere. Would renaming the main folder oldpmail (for example) without uninstalling then installing a new pmail knowing that under win7, there are a few files from programmes that are copied into /roaming including some for pegasus suffice ? Or do i need to store my pmail folder elsewhere (I guess i can always buy another extrnal drive) as is, then do a full uninstall with revo to clean the registry as well and then do a clean install ?

For purposes of this, i'm a completely noob and i remember reading that white paper a while back and couldn't make heads or tails of it, it's not my area. I can understand some of the stuff, but you could be writing a nice programme or a virus and i wouldn't know the difference. It's like you (assuming you're not what i'm going to say you are) understanding the difference between criminal and civil cases as to what is the level needed for plaintiff / prosecutor to get a "win" or knowing the difference between ciment and asphalt (without looking at wiki).

I'm so so sorry to ask such a stupid question, i know it is. I just really don't want to lose all my emails.

Can someone help me out ?

I check the whitepaper and since it's good for 4.63 and not 4.73, i'm not sure i can use that to avoid losing stuff.

I could experiment, but if someone would be nice enough to give me all the steps which i can then follow, it would be much appreciated (sorry for the duplicate thread, i guess there was no moderator when i created the topics one day apart).

    Re: Messages disappearing

The steps are to do a clean install (I suggest as multi-user even if there will only be one), creating users as per the old install, configure the installation, then copy the data from the old mailbox(es) to the new one(s) using the whitepaper is a guide.  For reassurance you can use it in combination with Hans' Guide to Filename and Extensions which you can find at http://www.vandenbogaerde.net then follow the Pegasus Mail information link to the Filenames and extension link.

Regarding your question about renaming your existing \PMAIL directory to \OLDPMAIL, yes, you can do that.  The new installation should want to install to the same place your \PMAIL directory was.  Point it there if it doesn't.

BTW, the whitepaper is relevant to v4.73 for what you are trying to accomplish.

    Re: Messages disappearing

Thanks for the help, i seem to have a functionning programme. Yes

    I'm having somes issues though.

I have 3 junk mail folders and i found the emails that disappeared (so i'm happy i could find them as some are always flagged as spam but they're not), however, i'm not sure which one is the correct junk mail folder. There was the default one that was there when i launched pegasus mail, should i move everything there ? and then delete the two folders ?

Somes files that are on my former mailbox are not listed in the whitepaper so i'm not sure if i should copy them.

    .pnl

I'm sure i'm missing something but i'm already very happy the programme is working really nicely (no hangs ups, downloads are instantaneous, so i'm wondering if i should just not enable the spamfilter)

That all depends on how the messages are being diverted to each folder.  You only need one so review your filters that route junk mail, pointing all of them to the junk mail folder you choose to keep (suggest keeping the default one).  Set the Spamhalter spam folder to the same folder (only needed if you're using Spamhalter).  Delete the other two.

.pnl files contain link folder data (eg: recent search results).  You might find some search results folders intermingled in your folder list.  If they're important, create a new search results folder by doing a search on anything you like, then move the other search results folders into it.

Your get to make that decision.  If your isp is tagging spam it might be adequate to just filter on their tag.

    Re: Messages disappearing

Thanks for the answer about the pnl.

I don't need them to be honest and i never understood how to get rid of those folders, so good thing.

    I'm having a slight issue.

I cannot for the life of me configure two identies, 3 others with my main isp, i have zero issue but their security is ***.

But for the others, even though i use separate identities, i can't for the life of me understand why it's not sending and though i instructed it to delete from server after download it doesn't. So downloading messages works (albeit not completely as it doesn't delete from the server) but sending does not.

     I am following exactly this

    https://www.infomaniak.com/fr/support/faq/1075/configurer-une-adresse-email-configuration-logiciel-de-messagerie-parametres-courrier

but it's not working, i'm not sure what's wrong.

I remember having issues configured them before. I think i've tried every single combo available in the security tabs, i had one different error message once it connected but had another issue but right now every time i try to connect, it's just failing. I also checked if i was using the proper passwords, they have a tool on the console for that.

I'm looking at thunderbird which does all the configuration for you and i'm entering the same stuff, so i'm at a loss.I must be missing something but i'm not sure what.

as for the spam, right now i think i'm going to not enable for a while.

    I think i finally got it :)

I'll let you know. But thanks for everything.

I need to re-read what you said about the junk folders, because i didn't really get it but i will.

    Re: Messages disappearing

Okay, so not working at all. Tried everything.

I'm sending screen caps to my host and see if that can tell what's wrong.

This is what i get everytime i send to anything, even myself. I tried three servers

"Delivery has failed on the enclosed message for the following
reasons reported either by the mail delivery system on the mail
relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module:

550 5.7.1 <adress mail>... Relaying denied. IP name possibly forged [Number]

I really don't know what i'm doing wrong, i just copied my pmail from another computer which is functioning, i think

    Re: Messages disappearing

Have you entered the appropriate email address in the "My internet e-mail address is:" field located in the General tab of Internet options?  It will likely be different for each identity.

    Re: Messages disappearing

    Yes.

I finally figured what was wrong, sorry, i didn't update sooner, i had appointments. I think everything is working, now i need to verify if i checked for every identity the "delete from server".

What i don't get is when i look up at one of the identities for pop3/smtp, it tells me it's used by another identity and if i change stuff, it will change for the other one, but i've created "profiles" for each account, so i'm at a lost why it is doing this, but i think i have everything under control except for spam.

I'm not sure how to deal with that one yet.

Thanks for all the help. I think if that dude from the hosting company didn't tell me i could use port 110 without any security, we would still be there in a year.

What you need to understand is that you create one POP3 host for each server that you need to retrieve from and one SMTP host for each server that you need to send through.  Then, for each identity, you specify the appropriate POP3 host(s) in the "Check these POP3 hosts for mail" list and the appropriate SMTP host(s) in the "Send mail using these SMTP hosts list.  Determining which identities should check mail for all identities and which ones should be blocked from being checked by other identities can be challenging when you have multiple identities.

Don't be surprised if the hosting company closes port 110 in the not too distant future.  That kind of access is rare.

Okay, so i need to redo them to know which one is attached to each one. like

Florence Smtp, Florence pop3 etc ?

My issue is that each time i create an identity, it asks me on which pop3 i want it to be based upon, which makes it quite difficult. Maybe i'm doing it the wrong way ?

Also i make sure each identity only checks for its server. It's cleaner for me this way, it might take me more time and i might forget sometimes to check one regularly but at least this one i'm fine.

Don't be surprised if the hosting company closes port 110 in the not too distant future.  That kind of access is rare.
I get that but my problem is while thunderbird has no issue because my host supports it so it sends the appropriate info and enters them automatically, pegasus is not supported (completely normal) but it's not letting me use the secure ports, it works with 110, the guy told me to use 110 so i'm guessing it's fine for now, but i'll try to fiddle with it again ?

I could show you what thunderbird show me and what i have on pegasus mail, but i'd rather not made this public for security issues, that's also why i blanked the email adress and my ip, though i'm sure you can see it if you're moderating. Maybe i'm doing something wrong, i don't know.

You're not doing it the wrong way.  Each identity needs to know which POP3 and SMTP server it should use.  It's not uncommon for multiple identities to use the same host.  An example would be if you had two gmail accounts.  You would need two POP3 hosts, one each hosted mailbox, but only one SMTP host for the gmail server.  You then have the option to configure one identity to check both POP3 hosts or use two identities so that sends and replies reflect the correct sending address.  Both identities would be configured to use the same SMTP host but different POP3 hosts.
