    VIRSCAN and AVG V8 (Free Edition)

    AVG V8 has been released by the vendor (AVG Technologies). It replaces previous versions, but is installed in a new directory. To use this new version of AVG with Virscan 4.9.2 to scan attachments in Pegasus Mail you need to update Virscan.ini with the lines:

    AVOK=1
    Cmdline=C:\Progra~1\AVG\AVG8\avgscanx.exe "%f" /ARC /NOBOOT /NOMEM

    To obtain AVG V8 from the vendor go to: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

    If you have problems with this new version of AVG and Virscan, post a question in this forum please

    Re: VIRSCAN and AVG V8 (Free Edition)

    Martin,

    I discovered your post after I sent you a private email to the address listed in Thomas's post.

    I have recently "upgraded" to AVG free 8.0 and after following avg's setup I seem to have a choice between no virus scanning and no email.
    In  a separate thread, Thomas R. Stephenson has suggested that I turn off the avg email scanning and use virscan instead. I downloaded the Virscan zip file and could use some help.

    While I have been using computers since the punch card days, I consider myself a novice when it comes to antivirus tweaking and command line entries. I am an end user using pmail as a stand alone client at home (have been using without problems since the early 90s). I am not a system admin.

    1st a question, the installation instructions say:

    If this is the first time to install Virscan
      o  Rename Virscn32.f to Virscn32.fff
      o  Rename Virscan.i to Virscan.ini

    No problem renaming the ini file Upon unzipping I find 2 files: Virscn32.f (dated1/4/06) and virscn32.fff (dated5/26/04) --I am not sure what to do.

    I am not sure haw to edit the ini file:
    ;  Virscan version 4.92
    ;
    [virscan]
    YesMsg=Click YES if Virus scan was Ok
    NoMsg=Click NO if Virus scan detected a problem
    OkStatus=Virus scan ran OK
    BadStatus=deleted by Virscan extension
    Advice=C:\WINNT\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\virscan.err
    Trace=No
    denyextensions=VBS,PIF,SCR,BAT
    ,EXE
    SkipExtensions=pm$,tmp,txt,jpg,jpeg,gif,bmp,png,!
    notify=
    NotifyMsg=
    WantYesNo=False
    CheckFN=True
    AVOK=0
    EncZip=Deny
    CleanMsg=
    ResultFile=
    EmptyResultFile=
    ;

    ;
    ; For AVG V5 scanner something like:
    ; CmdLine=c:\grisoft\avg6\Avgse.exe /SCAN "!f"
    ;      or for AVG V7
    ; CmdLine=c:\progra~1\grisoft\avgfre~1\avgw.exe /se /quit "%f"
    ;   AVG V8   (need to code AVOK=1 as well)

    _____________________________________________

    How would I actually modify the ini.

    Also the instructions use different language and show an edit LogSize=5000 -- ther is no LogSize in the ini and.

    With regard to the other instructions, they leave me somewhat confused:
    It seems to me that I want AVG to scan anything that virscan doesn't--does this mean that I need to make EncZip=allow
    Shold I change the YesMsg & NoMsg lines to exacly match the Instructions.

    Thank you.
    Jan Derdiger
