So there we have it - the question resolved, and an understanding of how to prevent the problem from re-ocurring.
But I have to comment (I can't stop myself) - how can it be that the AV producers (who fully understand the risks of deleting files) send out their 'point & click' software, with defaults set to delete?
It's not as if we are now ...

I have determined that the Pegasus Mail horse icon that appears in your system tray (bottom right hand corner with clock on your monitor) creates a huge volume of unnecessary network traffic when set to flap its wings to alert you of new mail. You can use the following instructions to be sure that your system is set to not have the wings ...

ClamWall is running very nicely on XP Pro with Mercury 4.52. However, I can't get it to ignore ''local'' emails. Under ''ClamWall config'', ''Basic settings'', I have ''Leave messages from local senders untouched'' checked. We have about 40-50 email accounts that are mostly accessed in-house from 192.168.1.x IP addresses using SMTP and POP3. I ...

Thanks for your reply.
If anti-virus was restricting/blocking access to files, I would expect to see this problem more often and for it to be more widespread - i.e. affect other mailboxes. Today, Mercury generated another error for the same mailbox.
Can anyone tell me what causes this error, please? If I have that ...

Has anyone written a policy to get F-Prot's new command line scanner fpscan.exe working with Mercury/32?

This may not be the right place to raise this but I've just read the various Norton threads and am amazed that they are still getting up to their old tricks.
Take a look at NOD32 (www.eset.com).
I've been using it for over six years and have never been infected (to my knowledge!). They don't try to fleece you every year with a 'new' version ...

Since about two weeks the first time Pegasus checks a mailbox, there is an error saying:
Pop 3 Network or protocol error
........
Trace showing end of transaction:
5: Connect failed, 6.
Subsequent mail-checkings are fine. This is happening at home and at work, both XPpro--systems. The only two changes I ...

InvaderZim: I hear Trend Micro's antivirus is pretty good and less of a resource hog, and Vista doesn't really need a separate firewall (I have a hardware firewall anyway). I also hear the Microsoft antivirus is terrible. Any other suggestions?
I've been using F-Prot for more than 8 years, both personally and corporately, and have ...

FWIW, I highly recommend NOD32 from www.eset.com, having tried most of the others. I've seen only one false positive (with heuristic scanning set to ''aggressive'') in the past 12 months. Disclaimer: the NZ distributor (Chillisoft.co.nz) is a business partner. I'm not making any money from this, but I reckon NOD32 is about the best A/V product out ...
