Okay - here is the cause (user as usual!) but not sure why it came across like this -

apologist-list
   File:             C:\Mercury\LISTSERV\apologists.mlf
   Title:            Apologists

Note the "apologist-list" does not have the   "s" at the end of apologist? That was it.

Dang! Thanks so much, so very much for sticking with me.

> Really; I can simply not find the spot to import my Thunderbird contacts or TB mail.

For Thunderbird, Eudora or Netscape MBX type folders you can use "Add mailbox to list to point at the directory containing the *.MBX files.  You can also use Mail System Converter to convert to and from a these and a few other mail programs. http://www.interguru.com/mailconv.htm or the latest version is always available from http://www.dragon-it.co.uk/pegasus.htm

For the address books use Dawn, created by Boris Zakharin

Dawn 5, created by Boris Zakharin

Dawn works with the following programs:

And finally if cost is not a problem here are a couple of commercial programs to do this  type of conversion.

You might want to check out the converters available at the following site as well.

It should make no difference to Mercury what program was used for SMTP delivery, assuming that RFC syntax was followed. The contents of the message sent by Outlook will presumably not be exactly the same as the one sent by Blat, though, and the program called by the policy may thus react differently to it. Mercury help says:

if a policy task crashes or hangs, Mercury will timeout after 90 seconds. In this case, Mercury treats the message as having passed the task's tests, and will allow it to be processed normally.

You could try using the MSendTo commandline mailer included with Mercury since version 4.61 as an alternative to Blat.

Hello Forum,

Just upgraded to Mercury 4.72  from 4.01 and noticed an improvement of the list web interface compared to 4.01

This post is maybe a bit biased, but wanted to give others some ideas what can be done with Mercury by spending some time and effort.

As I am hosting a few smaller & bigger mailinglists the need to integrate the webinterface into my existing website design is there. After some hours the final design was finished and MercuryB HTTP server is nice integrated into the overall website.

To get an idea for your own needs go to

That seems to be consistent with what I have observed.  Unfortunately, Policy actions are rather limited.  The available "Forward to another user" is what seems to have caused trouble to me (I have just had to deal with deleting 4500 messages as a result of a mail loop).  Mercury has taken a while to clear the queue!  I must obviously be very careful when using the Policy Forward action.

Thank you

Gordon

I'm wondering if I can create a general rule that always triggers which

adds the disclaimer (so that all the mails processed by Mercury would

have the disclaimer added), is there any predictable problem doing so?

Yes, you'll get multiple disclaimers since all messages will get the disclaimer each time it goes through Mercury.  Autoforwards, are the first ones that come to mind but anything forwarded without editing will get multiple disclaimers.  That's why the outbound filters were added.

Meanwhile, I'm getting e-mails back reporting that my deliveries have

been delayed. So I suppose it does somehow send.. It's not my firewall

or router, I've opened the ports 110 and 25 in both also added an

exception for Mercury Mail.

The server resolves but I cannot connect to port 25.

Answer Section:
    krydox.servebeer.com, A, 69.65.19.125

You may be running into port 25 blocking and/or anti-spam systems blocking systems without a fixed IP addresses.  Instead of using MercuryE shift to MercuryC and send your mail via your ISPs SMTP host.  In addition, open an alternate port (587) on the MercuryS server so that we can test making the connection via this port.  If 587 works remotely and 25 does not then this is a port blocking problem.

Did you note in the kb article that it says if you set some of the outlook only options it will drop back to TNEF no matter what the setting are in the user setup.

 [/quote]

Yes. These are just standard html formatted mails, some with attachments, no voting or meeting requests or any other OL only "features".

Have even checked through every contact, as mail format can be set on a per contact basis as well.

The frustrating thing is that there is no discernable pattern.[:@]

Thank you for the comments, Paul.  So far, I have always found the last X-Originating-IP header (i.e. the earliest chronologically) to be a reliable indicator .... checking such headers manually with a DNSBL look-up tool, e.g. at whatismyipaddress.com has always confirmed my residual SPAM messages to be blacklisted on several DNSBLs.

In fact my earlier statement about currently having 2% residual SPAM was wrong.  It seems to be much lower than that, avegaing one message a day, when I am receiving over 300 SPAM messages a day.  So, I am not left with much to clean up.  This small amount is hardly necessary to worry about, though I am interested to see how close to 0% I can get, without introducing any false positives.

This appears to be mostly a Mercury settings issue so I've moved it to the Mercury support forum.

There are various ways to stop spam and using reputable DNSBLs and SpamHalter are two good ones. You can consider using Graywall as well - it will delay good mail a bit but stops a lot of trash.

In Mercury make sure that relaying has been restricted. Go to MercuryS configuration, Connection control and verify that at least "Use strict local relaying restrictions" is clicked. "Only authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail" gives the highest protection.

In  MercuryS configuration, General you should normally not have "Accept mail for invalid local addresses" checked.

Finally make sure that all the spam that is tagged by blacklists or SpamHalter are moved to a spam control account by a global rule.

Any spam message addressed to you that is not caught by an anti-spam measure will simply end up in your mailbox, and will not cause any bounce notification. To be quite sure not to send replies to spam you may want to avoid using autoreplies, though.

Every time a spammer sends email with a spoofed "from" address that is my address, ie , spamhalter was letting it pass.  I would religiously move the email to the "MissedSpam" mailbox using IMAP (forwarding doesn't seem to work unless you do it on the server), but it appears to just be blacklisting me@myserver.com, which then causes all MY emails sent from myserver.com to other users @myserver.com!

So, I dig messages from me out of the spam trap (I have spamhalter flag messages with a header, then mercury moves the messages to a spam@myserver.com account, which acts as a quaranteen for spam so that if anything important gets lost we can go look for it)  and into the "notspam" account, as well as forwarding them to the intended recipient.  Then it appears to whitelist any email CLAIMING to be from me@myserver.com!

Is there any way to guarantee that mail sent from me is not filtered as spam?  I'm disapointed that spamhalter can't tell the difference between a spoofed from address and a real one - especially when the real ones are originating LOCALLY.  I thought it was supposed to filter based on content, not just the alleged "from" address.

Thanks!

it also looks like all messages for all users are being left on the server no matter what the mail client settings are set for (leave on server or remove from server)

also, i've noticed there is now a file in each mailbox with a CAC extension..... that seems to hold the names of all the messages in the mailbox...

since upgrading to 4.72, i've been having problems with usernames staying in the top portion of the pop3 server activity window..... most of the time, there are multiple entries for the usernames that are there....

also, several users are experiencing trouble logging in.... i haven't been able to determine if the names "stuck" in the activity window are the same users experiencing logon problems....

i just restarted mecury, and everything is fine... i wish i had taken a screen shot first, but didn't....

it will usually run fine for a couple days before the usernames start building up again....

is anyone else experiencing this problem?

(i will include a screen shot in a couple days)

Alright, I removed the 20 record. Now that I'm back in the office I will be checking Mexico's outlook settings. I will post back when finished.

Thanks again Thomas.
