It looks like your Pegasus Mail is not set up completely. The Registry needs to have the Pegasus Mail entries added. See if you have a file in your Pegasus Mail executables directory called SetPMDefault.exe. If you do, run it and I hope that fixes your problem
No, it won't since Pegasus Mail's Registry entries are re-created by Pegasus Mail whenever it starts, SetPMDefault.exe isn't involved here at all. Aside from this, EInOutError exceptions are usually caused by Delphi's file read and write functions you're using in BearHtml. Trying to catch this exception with the might provide further details, but you need to provide a DBG-file for BearHtml, Martin.
Can't believe that PM has made such an elementary mistake as not allowing customers to adjust number of characters allocated to message title in the normal folders.
It's a limitation of the current folder format: For accelerating folder processing a so-called index file is created which works like a simple database with fixed field lengths for caching the most important information about all messages in a folder. I'm sure David Harris had his reasons for imposing such a limit when he created this format, and I'm sure emails have become a lot larger containing more information in due course - which is why he's currently working on a completely new message storage system for Pegasus Mail and Mercury.

You might try using this utility to put the PMM/PMI on some read/write media and then pointing at the location using the "Add mailbox to list"

PMRestArch - Pegasus Mail Restore Mail Folder Archives:

Usage:
PMRestArch SourceDir DestinationDir

Description:
Pegasus Mail cannot display two mail folders with the same internal ID even if they are in separate mailboxes. Mail folders also have to be Read-Write.

This causes problems when trying to view mail folders which have been archived by copying them to backup media.

This utility:

1.  Copies all .PMM and .PMI files in the source directory to
the destination directory and renames them as BAKxxxxx.PMM
    and BAKxxxx.PMI.

2.  Ensures that the resulting file is Read/Write.

3.  Creates a different internal unique ID for each file.

Once you have run this program to restore archived folders to a directory you can attach that directory using the Pegasus Mail 'Add mailbox to list' option and access the archived folders in this new mailbox.

> Does such a utility exist?  It should actually not be too hard to create one (a PERL or PYTHON script perhaps).  Shouldn't even need to
> use the accompanying .PMI file, but you will lose any meta-data associated with each message.

I'm sure there is but I cannot find one right now.  You might checkout http://www.dendarii.co.uk/FAQs/pmail-addons.html   This was last updated in 2006 but the v2.x format has not really changed at all.

The ESC key is a little unreliable if the focus isn't inside the respective window while Ctrl + F4 always works on the active (last used) MDI window.

The program crashes when retreiving new mail from a google mail pop 3 account.

Any information ?

Do you have the same problem with the original (English) version? to test it, just add to the shortcut the commandline option "-x en", this will force PM to run in English (the French version won't be used except for a few graphics images).

That's fine thank you David - no big rush for this little issue. I just thought I would raise it so that future releases can handle the case. I am from Australia, and we also have a small region on the Nullabor Plain between Western Australia and South Australia that is GMT+0845. But I just looked in Windows7 and that time zone is not listed! So Nepal is the the only place in the Windows7 list with a quarter-hour time offset.

I have a bizarre problem that has appeared after the illfated Microsoft update on the 14th. However, this problem seems to be different from the one described in another thread.

1. If I try to connect with the mailbox as I did before the crash, it will not be found:

2. If I try to connect to the mailbox using its network address instead of the mapped drive letter, the nailbox is found:

However, when I close this window, this window appears:

and then Pegasus crashes, regardless of which alternative I choose (after Yes/No another messagebox appears before the crash, saying that the network address is invalid).

The confusing thing here is that Pegasus claims that the mailbox directory does not exist, but it HAS obviously found the root directory (or else it it would not be able to show that there is a user).

Something obviously happened because of the update -- either because the system changed or because the system rebooted without permission (I forgot to change that; this is a new system) and did some harm to the Pegasus system. But I don't know what the latter could be; I have reinstalled Pegasus and searched the registry for strange pegasus related keys, but without any success. So my guess is that there is something new in the Win7 system handling of mapped drives or security, and that Pegasus is not equipped to handle that. I installed the M$ updates on my (old) XP system, and that can still open Pegasus and my mailbox without any problems. My Vista system can also open the mailbox without trouble (but I haven't updated it lately, and I turned off UAC on it).

Any insight into what might casue this is welcome...
The issue will be fixed in the next version of Pegasus Mail with new modules of TER/HTS. If stripping out the image via Mercury be aware of the fact that you'll be stripping out both instances of the image, because not the image is inserted twice but it is referenced twice in the reply.
What I'm doing is just stripping out the HTML reference to the image ("<img src=.....>") that is incorrectly inserted after "On xxxxx yyyyy wrote:". It works like a charm right now, and I don't have to wait for the next version of Pegasus Mail which, based on past experience, I would not expect any time this year (4.51 released 7/2/2009, 4.52 released 2/13/2010, 4.61 released 2/24/2011).

Make sure the windows are not maximized and then then set the folder widths and close the folder.  Exit WinPMail to save.

Not at all sure what you are talking about, all new mail comes into the new mail directory, all deleted goes to the deleted message folder if you are using one.  Can you be more specific?  Are you talking about IMAP4 folders or added mailboxes?
I guess what I wanted was a simple mailbox with Out, In. Trash, Junk and perhaps one or two more folders which could be backed up using  a batch file. I have no idea what IMAP is or even what the initals stand for ....!

After receiving and replying to several mails, I find a plethora of .CNM files in my mail folder, all of which seem to hold the same mails !!!

Thanks for your reply, but I'm going back to Eudora-7 despite its many faults it's so much easier to use and to back up.

The simplest way would be to change your accounts to be via IMAP rather than POP, because then you are viewing the 'master' mail list on the server.

Or you could install Pegasus on a memory stick and then you're accessing only one storage area each time.

Of course, neither of these may be useful depending on your needs and situation.

Tom --

I'm using 4.61 & nothing happens when I select "check host for new mail."

Also, I have checked the user option "Ctrl+W activates the preview and selects the new mail folder" but it doesn't check for new mal & the Internet option "Check whenever the new mail folder is opened." This doesn't seem to work in 4.61 either.

Both of these features worked as expected in versions p[rior to 4.61.

We have a situation where users are unable to see annotations added to their mail by other users.

The typical scenario is this: When user A is absent, user B logs on to user A's inbox.

When user A returns, he can see the green dot indicationg an annotaion has been added. However when he opens the Annotations tab, the annotation is missing. The only way the annotation can be read is if user B logs on to user A's mailbox.

We have a Windows NT4 network and have been using Mercury/Pegasus for several years. There are approx 10 users.

New mail mailboxes are all located within \\NTServer\Mail\<username>

Current versions are Mercury 4.72 and Pegasus 4.61 (shared copy)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The server quit talking to the client.  I would really need to see what is happening with a session log to provide more info.

Go to File | Network configuration | General and turn on "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)"

Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to create special log files that show the entire exchange of information between it and the servers it connects to. Each session will be created in a file called TCPxxxx.WPM in your home mailbox directory (the "xxxx" is replaced by four digits). Creating session logs will slow down the performance of your system somewhat, and you should be aware that any username and password information exchanged between Pegasus Mail and the server will be shown in the log, *even* if you use SSL to secure the connection. Session logs are primarily useful if you need to debug a problem between Pegasus Mail and one of the servers it connects to - you should enable the option only on instructions from a system administrator or from Pegasus Mail technical support. [ Technical note: this control has the same effect as using a "-Z 32" commandline switch when you run Pegasus Mail ]

You can now try again to send/receive the mail and then look at the resulting TCP/IP debug file.  Review of this file will tell you exactly what is going on between WinPMail and the server.

Again, a session log would be very helpful.

David Harris has implemented ESMTP AUTH CRAM-MD5 for WinPMail.  It does a SMTP authentication in accordance with RFCs 2554 and 2195.  It will also do the LOGIN and the strange MS AUTH=LOGIN.

Go to Tools | Internet  options | (Sending) SMTP, edit the SMTP configuration, select the "Security" tab and then select the SMTP Authorization option as specified by your ISP.  Most require the the second or third SMTP Authorization option

There are some ISPs that advertise CRAM-MD5 but do not support it.  In this case you should try using v4.5 or later.  It has an option to fall back to the less secure options.

Do not use CRAM-MD5 authentication even if it is advertised

The process of logging into the SMTP server to authenticate your identity can take a variety of forms: the server "advertises" the forms it understands, and Pegasus Mail looks through that list, choosing the most secure form it recognizes. Some forms are very "weak", in that they either transmit your credentials as clear text or in a form that can be easily broken, while other forms are "strong", in the sense that it is very difficult to work out your credentials simply by observing the exchange of data between the two programs. Unfortunately, one of the strongest forms of authentication, called CRAM-MD5, is commonly misconfigured on SMTP servers, even at quite reputable ISPs - the server will advertise that it supports it, but will actually fail any attempt to use it. Getting the ISP to realize that they are at fault is a lost cause in most cases - it's almost always easier simply to check this control, which tells Pegasus Mail never to use CRAM-MD5 for this server. You should be aware that you reduce the security of your connection by checking this control: CRAM-MD5 is the only commonly-used authentication form that offers reasonable security, and by disabling it, you force Pegasus Mail to use less secure methods... But sometimes you may decide that being able to send mail is more important than being able to do it securely. The choice is yours.
