Ah, Brian...

I think you hit the nail on the head.  I have recently upgraded my Avast. Never thought of that. I will search Avast to see if I can find a spam filter.

Thank you so much, again.  I think you have rescued me.

Judi :-)

The upgrade to 4.71 went smoothly. And in the manual that comes with that, and perhaps earlier, I don't know... I didn't happen to look there (used inline help, etc. I did R some of the FMs!)...

"-U <user> Start WinPMail as another user (the “Become” switch”. -U can
only be used in NetWare modes
.)"

I'm pretty sure the NetWare mode isn't available to me. I start my .exe with -A, which says "not Netware" (and -ms... for multiple concurrent sessions- one for each of my users.)

BEWARE: If you want multiple concurrent sessions YOU are RESPONSIBLE for making sure that each of them is accessing a DIFFERENT user's mailbox. Multple concurrent access to one mailbox will end in tears.
The Help may not explain it very well but basically the difference is:

-u name = contact Netware and change to computer user "name" and open their mailbox

-i name = open the mailbox "name" - where you have multiple mailboxes

-id name = open a mailbox and change to identity "name"

I hope that helps.

Control of whether or not read messages can stay in the new mail folder is controlled by this setting:

Tools > Options > General Settings > Basic Settings > Allow read messages to stay in the new mail folder

I don't think you will find too many Incredimail users here.

You are probably better off researching conversion to Thunderbird or Outlook and use that as a stepping stone in the first instance.

There will be advice available in the archives of this forum in relation to conversion from those programs.

A method that does work, but can be painfully slow, is to create an IMAP account with a free provider and (assuming Incredimail can handle IMAP)

move your messages to the IMAP folders and then open that account in Pmail. You can then transfer your messages to local folders.

Q - Are these startup times unusual?
Startup time desktop: 2 sec
Startup time laptop: 50 sec
(15sec to display Pegasus)
(25 more sec to begin folder window -- this is reduced to 10 sec by not using the mapped drive approach.)
(10 more sec to display newmail list)
Too long.  There are two known issues that impact Pegasus Mail performance:

1. Printer driver - which you have addressed

2. Winsock - In Tools > Options > General settings > Advanced settings  ensure that the "Load Windows Internet Services" option is set to "Always"

There was a second question in my email notice from the forum that has not appeared here which was:
Q2 - What settings control startup configuration: Like start with [Mail
folders..] closed, and when opened, have My Mailbox selected, or make My
Mailbox and Gmail open together?
Tools > Options > General settings > Basic settings > Save the Pegasus Mail desktop state between sessions.  Read the help files for details about what this saves.

Most configuration settings, including this one, are mailbox specific so keep in mind that you are accessing the Admin mailbox from two machines so changes made on one machine will be reflected on the other machine.  You can enable the "Save desktop state" option, configure things as you like, close Pegasus Mail to save, then reopen and disable that setting so things don't get altered but that setting must be disabled on both machines.  Also, there is a method of using a different .ini file by each machine but it doesn't offer much in the way of control (different main window sizes & specifying a different temp directory are the only ones that come to mind).

The latest version of Pmical 2.50 is now available from the downloads area at Url:

http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry45574.aspx

 Please

ensure you read the PmicalHelp.htm before replacing any existing

versions of Pmical.  This version of Pmical includes a TimeZone database

in order to display both sender and recipient time zones, and switches

automatically when Daylight/Standard time changes occur.

Fixes have been created to handle yet more data problems.

Thanks, David. I will save that info for future problems.

Here's how I finally resolved it. When my cursor hovered over Pegasus in the task bar, a small grey Pegasus box appeared. It was THAT box that I was able to right-click on, and finally see the move/minimize/maximize. When I maximized, there it was. It took a long while of I don't know what, really, before I was able to stretch that damn little grey minimized box out to its normal size. So it wasn't off screen, it just got really tiny. This same thing has sometimes happened to me while inside pegasus, where I've suddenly 'lost' the email I was typing. Eventually I find it in the bottom left corner, looking like it's been minimized but really needs stretching up and out (forgive my terminology - I'm sure it's not quite right).

My recent thread "PM v4.63 fails to open in Win 7 Pro after Disk Cleanup and Defrag" started 25 Feb 2016 seems to be sorted.

In that thread I stated I would look at a Win 8 Pro 64-bit Fujitsu laptop  with PMail on which I had run the same two utilities Disk Cleanup and Auslogics Defrag.   They caused the same PM "Mailbox Lock" and an incomplete opening of  genealogical program TreeDraw, which then shuts down as Windows cannot find the error.   The act of using "Hibernate" to close the laptop just produced the hourglass for a few seconds on trying to open PMail.   Also the desktop icons for Desk Clean-up and Auslogics turned to a blank white.   Shutting down the laptop and re-booting allowed PMail to open to a "Mailbox Lock" and I could click Continue button to open PMail..

Why I had the PMail problems on reflection  now seems correlated to trying to down load "Important Updates", after the second Tuesday in February, which down load process kept failing.   Eventually some installed and I then ran the other two utilities, followed by the PMail problem as described.

I tried running System File Checker and extracting the text as sfcdetails.txt from a CBS.log file.   This found apparently six corrupt files, which could not be repaired.    Some web sites suggested running SFC.exe at least three times, which I did to no avail.   PMail still would not operate correctly on Hibernate - nor were the other problems cured.   Others suggest that some Updates are corrupted.

Some web pages suggested running a Windows utility DISM (Deployment Image Servicing & Management) with an internet connection active.    I was not sure what this might do, so I checked in Control Panel for System Restore and found there was a restore dated 9 Feb which coincided with the attempts to run Windows Update.  [I think the Update process always creates a restore point prior to installing updates)

I let Restore run and I was very pleased to see the desktop icons as before and PMail working normally, either from a Windows 8 Shut-down or Hibernate.

What you are seeing is what I suspected.  Pegasus Mail uses internal IDs for tracking just about everything associated with the folder list so it is not surprising there is a conflict with "My mailbox".  You have nothing to lose except time by trying manual edits to the HIERARCH file just be sure you have a backup of the mailbox directory that you can readily restore if needed.

This may be more information than you care for but it will give you some idea of what you are dealing with (credit to Bob Kellock for these details):

Note that when Pmail is opened it reads HIERARCH into memory and operates on the memory version of it. While running, it only updates the disc version if a significant change is made such as adding or deleting a folder ; trivial changes such as expanding or collapsing a tray do not cause the disc file to be updated but any such changes that have been made appear in the disc file when it is updated due to a significant change. HIERARCH is always updated on closing Pmail even if no change has been made during the session.

When Pmail is opened  it reads the header of every PMM to extract the  folder’s UniqueID  to see if there a folder entry in HIERARCH that has the matching UniqueID in field 3. If  field 5 of that entry in HIERARCH is Name_Unavailable then it gets replaced by the folder’s title from the header of the .PMM.

It also checks that, for each folder entry in HIERARCH,  that  there is a PMM (see Note 1)   with the same UniqueID in its header that matches the UniqueID, in field 3, of the folder entry. If no match is found then the title, in field 5 of the HIERARCH entry is replaced by Name_Unavailable.

Thus folders which previously had valid entries in HIERARCH but for which the PMM no longer exists are invalidated by the insertion of Name_Unavailable. Conversely where PMMs have “reappeared” they are made valid and they return to the same tray as they were previously (or directly under the mailbox where they were not under a tray).

Furthermore any PMMs found that have a corresponding PMI and do not have any type of entry in Hierarch are entered in HIERARCH as direct entries under the mail box (i.e. not in a tray) provided that there isn’t already an entry in HIERARCH with a matching UniqueID to that in the header of the PMM.

Thanks for that explanation - it was a great help in understanding what I was doing.

I ran into another kind to folder. A folder (envelope) appeared at the under My Mailbox that had no name. I use r-click [folder information] to find out that it was caused by MAIN (2).PMM, which I changed to MAIN (2).PMM.OLD. The folder remained but this time it was cause by JUNK (2).PMM which I changed accordingly. Now the folder icon is gone.I still have files named MAIN (2).PMM and JUNK( 2).PMM but no icons on the interface.

With my tray structure looking good I added my Gmail account as ISAM. I am confused about it that but that is a different problem so I will start a new thread.

Brian, I think my issue with file structure is fixed -- so again thanks.

Interesting comments, Christopher.    I have not carried out Registry cleaning, tune-ups, etc.,  the machine is just used for basic activities.  The Disc Clean-Up is a Microsoft utility, the other was recommended by our local computer shop.    Various web pages describe it as an upgrade to the OS defrag utility and do not report any problems in its use.    They have only been used two or three times on my Win 7 Pro machine, so any problems were not noticed previously.
Happily running Check Disk appears to have cured the problems and PMail opens as usual, although I've just noted the desktop icon for Auslogics is basically white.

Thank you for the help. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Stevenson. Like the rest of you he was so very helpful and gave a lot to the forum and Pegasus Mail. I didn't think it has been 4 years

Known issue.  Developer is aware of it and should have it fixed in the next release.  See this discussion:

Subject: Private Message: PM 4.71 and your great xclose32 Plugin (community.pmail.com)

I received the email yesterday 22 Feb 2016.  I'm confident it was posted recently because I have otherwise contacted the author.

As far as I know, the option "Deleting the search results at the end" = "Sucherergenisse beim beenden löschen" (german translation) is not working correct. Ist realy hard to delete each for this pseudo-foldes maualy

You will find all of this remaining "folders" in the file Hierach.pm (naming at least in the German version!)

Please search for "Bisherige Sucher" (german) = "recent searches" (??) and delete them manualy.

But his will only change the place of the pseudo-folders to the bottom
