it worked, but i also got an internal error with one of the folders, probably the one i copied.

 I'll  do it the right way next time. Hopefully, i can find this next time i encounter this.

When I changed computers (from winxp to win7), i did a dirty move for pegasus mail.

I've tried following the instructions to move the mail folder because i need to move it from the OS drive (too much space taken) but i am either not doing something right or because of what i did when i copied (simply put) the entire pmail folder I messed it up.

I'm showing you a tree of the folders i havei n the Pmail folder so you can see my dilemma.

 Could someone tell me if this is why i cannot move the mail folder or give me instructions how to move to another drive ?

I tried following the instructions on the wiki but for some reason, it didn't work. I'm never sure with the administration rights, if i'm doing something right or wrong.

 I have win7 pro, my C drive is an SSD but it's a 120 and i have only 16 gig left. Because of my work, i receive a lot of very large files.

 Any help would very appreciated.

Also, when i forward messages i always have attachments added for no reason. Sometimes, i forget to remove them and people tell me they can't open them. I have tried every single combo to not have that, but i'm not sure what is doing that. But that is justa minor issue.

My main issue being, i need to move the mailbox somewhere else.

Also I know i did a booboo because of the "empty" folder that i cannot delete. The last time, i managed to rectify this, i lost a lot of stuff (lost is an exageration, i always copy before trying to do something).

There is only one situation in which you can reuse an entire mailbox and that is if the paths to both the Pegasus Mail installation files and to the mailboxes are identical in the old installation and the new one.  This is because numerous configuration files located in the mailbox directory contain these paths.  Since you locations are different you MUST create a new mailbox in the new installation and then only copy data from the old mailbox to the new one.  There is a downloadable whitepaper in the Downloads section of this site that will help.

As for the attachment issue, if you forward a message that contains both a text version and an HTML version those parts will be attached when you have the "Forward any attachments.." option selected.  Could this be what recipients are seeing?

As for the atatchment issue i have no idea, it has always done this. Whetehr it was a text message or not, whether i checked the mime box or not... I know others have had this problem, i'm not sure why. It's always been like this, there is not one forwarded message that doesn't add those attachments, if I use thunderbirds, this does not happen.. So it's particular to pegasus mail.

You are correct, I did not understand.  I now see by your screenshot that you have a C:\PMAIL\PMAIL directory that appears to be a duplicate of C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS.  That is worth looking at though unlikely to be a cause of any problems.  You should check to see if your shortcut is executing win-pm32.exe from \PROGRAMS or from \PMAIL though.

A big problem I see is that you have mailbox data in C:\PMAIL\MAIL.  This directory should hold the directories that are the actual mailboxes.  A default single user install would look like C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN.  If the only mail data you have is in C:\PMAIL\MAIL then I think the cleanest way out, especially considering this as a copy from an XP installation, is to do a clean install of Pegasus Mail, tell it where you want the mailboxes located, and then copy mailbox data to the new mailbox directory.  You will need to get the existing C:\PMAIL out of the way either by copying the deleting it or renaming it.  If it were me, I would back it up and then rename it to C:\PMAIL_SAVED until the copy process is complete.  The fact that you don't have a tray structure in your folder list is a good thing in that you won't have one to rebuild one.  Hint, the old PMAIL.INI file makes a good reference tool when setting up a new install.

If you have a lot of old mail that you don't need in the new install but want access to, consider not copying it to the new install but instead add the old mailbox directory to the folder list as an added mailbox.  You can store that directory on whatever drive you like and copy/move messages from it to the new install as needed.

So i change pmail to pmail_saved. do a new install. Then i need all my folders which i readd somehow, and i'm stucked with the same issue as how I don't understand the instructions to move my mailbox to another drive. I know pmail needs to be on OS drive but the mailbox can be elsewhere. I just can't manage with those stupid permission rights in win7 to do it. Win 98 was so easy for that....

I posted a long reply yesterday but it hasn't appeared.  I though maybe it was delayed by the moderator but I'm beginning to wonder.  My suggestion was to do a new install of Pegasus Mail on whatever drive you want it to be on, configure it, and then copy mailbox data per the whitepaper I referenced.

Thoughts I expounded in my missing post:

- Pegasus Mail does not HAVE to be installed on C:; it just can not be installed anywhere in \Program Files.  A default install location of C:\PMAIL is suggested for ease of troubleshooting but it is not a requirement

- You have mail data in \Mail that should not be there.  Your screenshot did not show mailbox folders which I assume was the result of the sort order.  Regardless, that mailbox data will need to be figured out.  I suggest tackling that as a separate issue once everything else is working.

- Oh yeah, I believe you can specify the mailbox location during the install so if you want to install to C: and put the mailboxes somewhere else, you can.  It has been awhile since I did a new install so I don't remember exactly how this looks.  It is possible that this option is associated with a multi-user install.  I might be worth spending a few minutes with the manual to see if it clarifies this.

Hi, i did all you said, all my folders are here. I had had to copy the pmail.ini because my identities didn't copy, i followed what the whitepaper said not to copy first and then saw my identities were missing so i copied that file. But the empty folder was already there, i know it's not linked to that. Thank you for that !!! Such a relief, it worked like a charm. I have now 33 gig on my OS drive and that i am happy with...

I only copied the mail folder, not the rest, not the programs folder etc.... I moved all that i have in pmail_saved to E in its own folder so that i have a back up still. I also did test on all my identities to see if they send fine... and they all receive fine as well.

This is how my tree look like, sorry i have so many, i can't show everything. My main problem would be the "empty" folder below copies to self. I have had it since i switched computers, it's not a real problem, but if we can find what i did wrong, i'm happy to clean it up.

I am very surprised that copying pmail.ini has not caused you problems because there are numerous entries in it that contain path data so is not a file that should be copied.  Identities should be recreated in the new install.  Additionally, I have solved numerous odd problems by rebuilding pmail.ini so believe a clean install should include a fresh .ini.  Hint:  Using the old pmail.ini for reference during configuration is helpful.

As for the blank folder, try this.  Right click on it and select folder properties.  Identify the filename.  Close Pegasus Mail.  Use a File Manager to navigate to your mailbox directory and move that file out of the directory.  Restart Pegasus Mail.  If all is well, delete the moved file.  If you can not access the folder properties, close Pegasus Mail, use a File Manager to navigate to your mailbox directory, rename HIERARCH.PM to HIERARCH_PM.SAVED.  Restart Pegasus Mail.  A new HIERARCH.PM file will be created on restart.  Note:  Rebuilding HIERARCH.PM removes any tray structure.  This does not appear to be an issue for you because I do not see any trays in your folder list, at least not the part captured in the screenshot.

The folder just won't delete. I get either an error or nothong, i tried reindexing it, didn't work either.

 A hierarch.pm file resides in each mailbox directory.  It stores the

folder structure for that mailbox.  Confirm that you restarted Pmail after renaming the

hierarch.pm file.

Looks like some mail data corruption.  Unfortunately, corruption is not one of my areas to expertise.  Suggestions from other members please.

You mentioned that the fol06161.pmm file is large.  Is it as large as 2 GB? 

I confirm that i did restart pmail after renaming both files.

Not the file is not that big, it's 1.5 gig.

Okay i found what is fol0161 the good one, it's Press2. I don't put anything in it anymore, because it became too big.

I just noticed i lost my entire copies to self folder, i have now only 9 messages in it.

But the other folders are all there. Since i kept a copy of my entire mail program, can you tell me if there is a way for me to get it back in some ways ? I don't care if it's not in copies to self folder, i can create a new folder but i need that history back.

I found the file in my saved copy, but now i have no idea how to import it to its new place

Copy the file pair (.pmm & .pmi) to a temporary directory then add that directory as an added mailbox to the folder list.  You can then copy the messages from it to your copies to self folder.

To add a directory as an added mailbox:  open the folder window and with it active, select Folder > Add mailbox to list...  Tick the directory option, enter the path, give it a name.  It will show up at the bottom of the folder list.

To disconnect it when done:  right click on it and select the disconnect option.

I copied it to a temporary directory at the same level as pmail, tried what you said, the mailbox is created but there is nothing in it.

What did you end up doing?

My bad for forgetting about the duplicate ID issue that causes PMail not to display folders with the same internal ID.

The step is forgot about is processing the copy of the .pmm with the utility called PMRestArch then adding the directory containing the resulting file as an added mailbox.
