I've recently upgraded to Windows 10 and my Pegasus program quit working. After days of messing around with the settings I gave up and contacted my ISP for help. They require IMAP now, and walked me through the settings. I was able to download, but could not send at that time. Now, I've gotten the SEND to work, but now the downloading isn't working! I mistakenly (today) created two IMAP profiles that are the same, and can't seem to delete either one! Can somebody tell me how I can delete the profiles so I can get it right? Also, does anyone have any clues as to why I am unable to download my mail? I've played with all sorts of port and SSL combinations and my eyes are now crossing!
You can manage the profiles directly by editing IMAP.PM in your mailbox. (Use Notepad or similar)
What are the IMAP settings given to you by your iISP?
IMAP profiles are stored in a file named IMAP.PM located in your home mailbox directory. Removing this file will allow you to start from scratch. Do it while Pegasus Mail is shut down.
As to why you can't download mail, it is usually a configuration setting in the IMAP profile. Understand that IMAP does not behave like POP3 in that it does not download mail from the host server with the ability to delete it after download. IMAP is a protocol that allows you to access the hosted mail. The messages can be saved locally but the behavior is different than with POP3. If you are not familiar with IMAP a little research on it would be
beneficial. Searching this community may provide you with some insights
into how to work with it. I don't use it regularly so can not offer
advise on how to work with it as the only protocol.
Did your ISP insist that you use IMAP? I ask because many recommend it but still support POP3 (Gmail for example). If they only recommended it then it might be worth searching the support pages to see if POP3 configuration settings are still published or if you can find anything that states POP3 support has been discontinued.
Of course, you might prefer IMAP. It is a personal choice provided your ISP gives you one.
Thanks for your reply! I have searched my program files on my hard drive and can't locate the IMAP.PM file! Can you tell me exactly where it would be?
The settings that my ISP provider told me I had to use since they are no longer supporting POP3 port 25 are:
Incoming: imap.comcast.net / port 993 with SSL on. Only if needed, port 143 with SSL on.
Outgoing: smtp.comcast.net / port 587 (SMTP) or Only if deeded port 465 (SMTPS)
I am sure the problems I'm having are in my configuration of IMAP.
From the Pegasus Mail pulldown menus select Help > About Pegasus Mail then click the "Info" button. Inside of the Pegasus Mail Information window find the entry for "Home mailbox location:". The directory pointed to by this entry is where you will find the IMAP.PM file.
Also, what version of Pegasus Mail are you using? I suspect you will need at least version 4.70 because in contains a newer implementation of SSL that may be required by Comcast.
Finally, if you still want to try POP3 you might test the configuration settings on this page: http://customer.xfinity.com/help-and-support/internet/email-client-programs-with-xfinity-email/
Thank you Brian...I DID find the file and was able to delete the IMAP profile and start over. BUT, I am still not able to download my mail. I've tried the "only if needed" ports, and nothing seems to be working. I've downloaded the latest version of Pegasus Mail (4.71.565) as well. I've tried all 3 of the SSL options in the setup with both ports.
I started out originally WITH comcast support. I printed their email client configuration settings and when it wasn't of any help, I chatted with them and copied and printed our chat. She walked me through the setup, and when I still wasn't able to get it to work, she recommended I come to the Pegasus site. I'm at a loss...I've used Pegasus mail for years and have never had any problems.
In relation to ports, normally you would use port 143 with STARTTLS and port 993 with direct SSL.
In relation to authentication you normally need your username and password where the username is either your entire email address or just the part before the @. (depends upon your ISP and the server requirement)
Server name appears to be imap.comcast.net
If it continues to fail turn on session logging in Tools | Internet options | General, to see what is happening.
Read the associated Help files first. If you are uncertain seek further assistance here.
Don't post the logs here as they might contain your username and password in an easily decodable format.
Thank you Brian and caisson!
FINALLY have the settings and configurations right, and the mail has downloaded into my program! I was surprised that IMAP created a new INBOX so I now have my old mail in the "New mail folder" and my new mail in the "INBOX folder". Will get some getting used to, but at least it's all in one program now!
Thanks again!
Bear in mind the content of Brian's first post. The IMAP folder or folders you see (and the mail they contain) remain on the server.
At this point you have accessed your mail rather than downloaded it. If there are messages that you want to retain within Pmail you can transfer them
from the IMAP folders to your local folders.(Select and Move)
Thanks for reminding me of that! So now I have to make a daily trip back to comcast's site to delete what I've already got. It's an extra step, but at least I'm accessing it now in my mail program!
You can filter on IMAP.
For example you can create a General Rule that automatically moves all mail from your IMAP Inbox to your local Inbox when you connect to the IMAP server and click on the Inbox.
You can then disconnect from the IMAP server and work as normal with your local folders
If you need help with this let us know.
Also, the Settings tab of the IMAP profile contains the options for message deletion handling. Click the Help button on that screen to read about each setting.
I'll hook on to this thread with my problems with IMAP..
I have a couple of IMAP folders that give the same problem: shortly after connecting the error message in the attachment is displayed. This error appears with the folder open and pmail idle (doing regular checks for new mail), and also if I am reading a message and then want to move it to a local folder, and also if I select messages from the IMAP folder and want to move those to a local folder.
Closing the folder and reopening it solves this, but only for the same short time. I have this issue with all IMAP folders (gmail and other) so I would guess it is something on my side, and not the server?
Any help is appreciated.
in the TCPxxxx.imap log file I see the following errors:
