Corrupted "Sent Items" folder?

Upgrade is very simple: Make sure you have a full backup, shut down Mercury, and run the installer, selecting upgrade. If you use any of the daemons that come with Mercury they will probably need to be upgraded too.

Running Mercury 4.74 on Windows 7.

Suddenly today, my outgoing messages are not being copied correctly to my "Sent Items" folder.  Looking at this folder there are a whole list of messages with blank Subject, From, and Recipient entries.  I have just sent a couple of messages to myself and this same behaviour occurs, though the messages have been delivered to the recipient address.

If I open the messages with the blank entries, I typically see a partial message.

I initially saw this behaviour when using Thunderbird as the client, but it is also evident when viewing with an Android tablet running Aquamail.

I note that I now have around 10,500 messages in Sent Items.  Could it be that this is too much?  I have never heard of any limits.

I am suspecting that Sent Items has been corrupted.

As a temporary solution, I have changed the folder to which copies of my messages are sent from "Sent Items" to "Sent".  New messages seem to be copied correctly to this folder.

I do keep a daily backup of my Mercury top level folder and all subfolders, so I should be able to restore most of copies of past sent mail.

Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you

Gordon

There is a help program for checking and fixing IMAP folders included with Mercury, mbxmaint_ui.exe, so use that to find out the status.

There is no fixed limit for number of messages in a folder, but hardware capacity will eventually cause one. 10000 messages would not be a problem on most systems.

Other than that there are numerous improvements to IMAP in v4.80 so I would encourage you to upgrade.

Thanks very much Rolf. The notes for the Repair capability in mbxmaint_ui.exe state that Repair should only be used if the folder cannot be opened.  I presume that this is not critical, give that you have suggested trying Repair.

There is no hardware limitation for 10,000 messages.  The MERCURY folder stands at about 22GB but there is still plenty of disk space.  The disk reports that it is in perfect condition.

Yes, I will upgrade to 4.80, though I have never had a problem with IMAP in 4.74 before the current issue.  I was basically waiting in case any important bugs were found in 4.80 ..... and then procrastinating.  I haven't done an upgrade for years, but I presume there are instructions somewhere.  I am guessing that I just replace the MERCURY folder with the new one, having saved some specific subfolders for use by 4.80, e.g. MAIL.

Thank you

Gordon
