Multiple USERS- auto logon -ms -u?
The upgrade to 4.71 went smoothly. And in the manual that comes with that, and perhaps earlier, I don't know... I didn't happen to look there (used inline help, etc. I did R some of the FMs!)...

"-U <user> Start WinPMail as another user (the “Become” switch”. -U can
only be used in NetWare modes
.)"

I'm pretty sure the NetWare mode isn't available to me. I start my .exe with -A, which says "not Netware" (and -ms... for multiple concurrent sessions- one for each of my users.)

BEWARE: If you want multiple concurrent sessions YOU are RESPONSIBLE for making sure that each of them is accessing a DIFFERENT user's mailbox. Multple concurrent access to one mailbox will end in tears.
The Help may not explain it very well but basically the difference is:

-u name = contact Netware and change to computer user "name" and open their mailbox

-i name = open the mailbox "name" - where you have multiple mailboxes

-id name = open a mailbox and change to identity "name"

I hope that helps.

PS: New material, added after much of the following had been written....

What I learned:

a) Be careful to be clear about the difference between "identity" and "user", as those terms are used by Pegasus. Two different sets of wants are catered for, but be sure that you are using the concept that matches your wants.

b) If you want to have two (or more) nearly separate "entities" (a non-Pegasus word) in one computer. (Say, for instance that is is a family's computer, and Mom, Dad, and Henry all want to use email, but don't want any overlap with other people's email)... then you are talking of a job for "users" (as Pegasus means that word.)

c) Once set up, when launched, the program will ask what user you want to connect as. And you will have to shut Pegasus down, re-start it, if it is now time for a different user to use their email.

d) It IS POSSIBLE... but dangerous... to set up the program so that multiple sessions can be running at the same time. For that you use the -ms command line switch.

 e) If you are running with NetWare (i.e. your system has what's needed, and you haven't got the -a command line switch in your shortcut), then I think you can set up a shortcut that takes you straight to a particular user's workspace, with the -U switch. But that only works if you are running under NetWare.

THANK YOU to the people who contributed to the thread, got me "there". (^_^)

(If there are problems with this summary of what I learned, perhaps send Private Message to me, to avoid making the thread confusing?)

==============================

Below here... as originally posted....

(Windows 7, Home Premium/

WinPMail version: Version 4.63 (Win32), Dec 22 2011, build ID 325)

===

I'm most of the way to my "perfect solution"...

I want to be able to have two instances of Pegasus running at same time, in one machine, doing POP/SMTP to two servers on the web.

Want as much as possible "separate".

Managed to create the two users... and I use the term in the Pegasus sense, I hope. Not Identities.

Managed to create two shortcuts on desktop to invoke the program.

Included command line switches in the shortcuts....

 C:\PMAIL\Programs\winpm-32.exe -U user1 -ms

 C:\PMAIL\Programs\winpm-32.exe -U user2 -ms

But... when I dbl-click on short-cut, program launches via dialog asking me to say which user I want to start as. I would rather that was "automatic", "inside" the shortcut. I thought the -U user1 would do that for me? (Yes, I answer the "Username, please" dialog's question, during program launch, "user1" or "user2" without the quotes, and all is well.... just not automatic.)

The commandline switch to identify a user (in standalone mode) in a shortcut is -i.

Sorry... but... Are you sure? It was my understanding... perhaps dated... that there are (were?) two separate but distinct schemes available... one of "users" (switch -u) and a separate, different scheme using "identities" (switch -i).

But maybe the "new user" is the old "identity"?

I want all of the email, settings, etc, of the two people sharing the machine to be separate. Almost as if two laptops were available, and one could be dedicated to each person. I believe the identity scheme, at least as it once was, was more about, say, letting one person have two "personalities", while using the same mail folders, etc. E.g. a person who is both design engineer and shipping shipping clerk at a small business. By switching IDs, he'd get different signatures at the bottom of things he sent out, but still have his "engineer" and "clerk" emails in one "place"?

Forgive me questioning your answer?

The identity switch is -id

... I did! That's where the "-U" came from... and read the entries for -ID and -I

Sigh... maybe it is a version thing. I had hoped to stay with the devil I know... ver 4.63.... but maybe I need (shudder) to update my Pegasus.

Hmm. Ironic. In looking into the details of the correct update procedure, I came across....

http://www.pmail.com/faqs/faqs_wsi.htm

... where one of the FAQ answers suggests that the current Pegasus is more multi-USER friendly than dear old 4.63.  Ah well. If computers were easy, what would we do with all that free time?

The 2011 version is a bit old now ;)

The v4.70 help says this about these switches:

-U <username>

"Become" another user for the duration of the session. In NetWare mode, you must belong to a group called BECOME to be able to use this flag, and must have proper rights to the target user's mailbox and new mail folder on the file server.

-I <username>

Specify your standalone identity on the commandline. This flag only operates in standalone mode (it is ignored in NetWare mode) and differs from -U in that you are not actually becoming another user - you are simply identifying yourself, so Pegasus Mail takes fewer security precautions against mail forgery.

-ID <Identity>

Specify an identity

that Pegasus Mail should switch to automatically on startup.
I have been using the -i user switch for many versions now and I've not had any issues with it.  Have you tried it yet?

I haven't tried the -i switch because what IDENTITIES do doesn't address my wants.

As you say, my installation was pretty elderly. Worked fine! (A testament to Pegasus!)... but I decided that while everything was in turmoil anyway, It Was Time.

It's the -id switch that sets an identity; the -i switch changes to a specific user.  This is in my previous posts and in the help that I've quoted above.
