Difficulty opening messages with large attachments

FWIW, I have been able to consistently reproduce the behavior describe by Scott Y. I used an HTML message (with multiple attachments) whose size was listed as "12M" in the Size column of the message list.

PM is in Preview mode (as opposed to List mode) and the preview pane is enabled in the Folders menu.

When in the New Mail folder, this 12 Mb message would consistently open when double-clicking it in the message list. However, when placed in a number of other folders (some of which contained <10 messages), this same large message would consistently fail to open when double-clicking it in the message list.

Hope this sheds additional light toward resolution.

This problem occurs regularly when a message is larger than ~1.5 Mb (due to large attachments). If I double-click on such a message, it won't open. But if I click on the "Open message" icon in the mailbox toolbar, it will open. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea of what is happening? Thanks. (Pegasus 4.70 in Win7 x64)

I haven't seen problem with messages but it definitely exists with attachments. A small pdf attachment will open with a double click whereas a large one requires use of the Open button. Attachment preview affects this as well. When enabled it can prevent a double-click from opening an attachment.

As for messages, are you viewing the HTML (fancy) version by default? If so, consider turning that off and viewing the plain text version by default and the fancy version only when needed using the View button. I don't know that this will solve the problem but if you test it please post back with the results.

One other thing worthy of note is that in Pegasus Mail, if the window you are double-clicking in does not have focus before you start then the first click activates the window and a subsequent double-click is required for the action.

Are you by any chance using Content Control to do your spam checking?. It is quite expensive on time. Messages with attachments cause the attachments to be analysed as well

Thanks for the suggestion, irelam. Content Control is disabled, likewise Spamhalter.

Thanks, Brian. The message has focus, and even multiple double-clicks fail to open it.

The following settings did not affect the problem, whether enabled or disabled: Options > Incoming Mail > Message Reader >
Where a choice of format exists, display the fancy version.
• Turn attachment preview off by default in the attachment viewer.

Aha ... Folders > Preview Mode was enabled. When I disabled that, the large messages opened with a double click. Unfortunately that setting is not remembered between sessions, so 4.70 always opens with it enabled. I'll install 4.72 and make a new post if that still occurs.

My v4.72 is working as expected. I don't have an earlier v4.7x version to test.

Does your Preview/No preview button show as "Preview"? If so, this means that preview is off. It's a little confusing in that it shows the button action rather than the current status.

The button on the open message toolbar says "Preview" -- which is as expected because I have "Turn attachment preview off by default in the attachment view" enabled in Options.

Ok, now I understand that Preview Mode in PM's Folders menu determines whether a preview of the message will be shown below the message list. It is always enabled (checked) when I start PM, and does not remember its state when last shut down. I need to install v4.72 to see if the problem continues.

Some of what I have been talking about is the preview settings for attachments which is completely different though may be related because some attachments won't open with a double click if Preview is enabled so it may be the same for messages. There is no way to disable preview bye default when in Preview mode (would defeat the purpose) so I think the only options are to disable the preview per message when you encounter the problem or work in List mode.

FWIW, I prefer list mode. At the office I keep my Folder list window always open on the right side of my screen, my New Mail folder always open top left, my Accounting folder always open middle left and a third folder open lower left that varies. At home I have similar but with the Folder list, New Mail folder, and Gmail folder windows open. It's a laptop without enough vertical space to keep any more open without them being too small for my liking.

Thanks, Brian. Now I understand. In summary:

In the toolbar above the folder list there is button which toggles between "Preview" and "List" display. When Preview display is enabled, the Folders menu has an item "Preview Mode" (P Mode). When P Mode is enabled, messages are previewed in a pane below the folder list; when disabled, the text "Message preview is disabled" appears in that pane instead.

P Mode is enabled by default when Pegasus opens in Preview display, or when it opens in List display then toggled to Preview. Once P Mode is disabled, it remembers that state when toggling between Preview and List display, but only for that session; when Pegasus is restarted, it again defaults to P Mode enabled.

Large messages will not open for me with double-click _whenever P Mode is enabled_; they do open with double-click when P Mode is disabled, and they always open by clicking the Open button on the Attachments tab, regardless of the P Mode setting. I don't know the lower size limit for what makes a "large" message -- a 2.3 Mb message opened but 6.1 Mb would not.

These particular messages contain multiple attachments; the largest was a 3.3 Mb PDF file, and it could be opened by double-clicking it.

(And FWIW, I think it's unnecessarily confusing to be in "Preview" yet able to toggle "Preview mode" while remaining in "Preview." The terms are almost identical yet control different functions.)

I'm really having a problem understanding what you mean by open a message: In preview mode it opens the moment you select it from the folder list, so do you mean open in a separate reader window? I know someone is wondering "Why in the world do you want Preview enabled and Preview Mode disabled? If you enable Preview, don't you want to see the previews?" As Brian Fluet wrote above, turning off Preview Mode "would defeat the purpose" of Preview.

I use Preview in order to get two adjacent panes:
Left pane: Folder tree
Right pane: List of messages in whatever folder is focused in the tree.

That way I never need to open folders in their own window, thus making the Pegasus desktop less cluttered. I actually don't want a preview of message contents, so I turn Preview Mode off to save time loading messages containing graphics, and I have hidden the preview pane by dragging its top border down.

So in effect there are three layouts possible:
1. One pane: List display
2. Two panes as described above
3.
Three panes: Preview display

Yes, open the message in a separate reader window. I don't use the preview pane per se (see my comment just above this one). That is how I used Eudora for many years before switching to Pegasus.

Opening a message with double-click is likewise by years of habit (further reinforced by double-clicking to open documents and run programs everywhere in Windows). Plus it is efficient because I first select the message with the mouse, then immediately double-click; the two alternate methods you mention are slower because they require moving the mouse to the button, or moving my hand to the Enter key.

So double-click opens a message 99+% of the time. That it fails under certain limited circumstances appears to be a bug.

But what it will _not_ save is Preview enabled and Preview Mode disabled.&nbsp;
</p><p>Correct.&nbsp; They are one and the same in that message previews are only available in Preview Mode. </p><p>If this is a major problem then you may need to train yourself to use the Open button rather than double click, at least until this is fixed.&nbsp; Same goes for large attachments when attachment preview is enabled. </p><p>
</p><p>That summarizes perfectly the situation with large messages and large attachments which don't open with double-click. Thanks for working through this with me to a clear answer.</p>

In summary...

The original post was about the problem with large messages not opening on double click when in Preview mode. There is no solution so the workarounds are to use the Open button or not use Preview mode.

Hiding the preview pane does nothing to address the problem but it speaks to the flexibility of Pegasus Mail which I hope helps to offset its shortcomings.
