subfolders gone - Pconfig dosbox

Thanks idw & aderoy,

will go to the place you adviced then with my new installation of pegasus.

As for the lost subfolders; I recovered lots of .PMI and .PMM files - but none seem to match in base name. How could taht be? From the file-sizes and dates I can see these PMM files must be my old folders.

How can I see them again as mail?

Should I make a new thread on the forum on this specific subject?

I don't necessarily need to rebuild a tray structure - just to see the mails again would be great. So editing HIERARCH.PM is not ncessary, if I am correct?

After reinstall of Windows 7 (from 32 to 64 bit) and change of letters for the drives Pegasus Mail runs again (thanks to this forum's tip about dosbox running pconfig.exe

but I only see the mail that was in the new Mail box before the reinstall.

Any thought on how to get the subfolders back?

This is what I see via About Pegasus

 WINPMAIL.EXE directory: E:\pegasusmail\Programs
Home mailbox location: C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN
New mailbox location: E:\pegasusmail\mail\Admin

The Home Mail location was created after start-up, however in pconfig exe I set it the same as the New mailbox location, but Pegasus said it didn't exist.

If you ran pconfig.exe (not pconfig32.exe) then it probably couldn't handle the long directory name of \pegasusmail.  Try it again using the DOS long filename convention in the path ( E:\pegasu~1\mail\admin) or try running pconfig32.exe (no DOSBOX needed, more user friendly UI).

Thanks Brian,

indeed I got around that problem by using the ~ . I can see the previous "new mail' - but all subfolders and adressbooks still not visible.

Any advice is welcome.

It sounds like you created a new mailbox except for the reference to seeing the previous "new mail".

Is that new mail from before the problem started or new mail received since you started working on this?

What does your Info now show for Home and New mailbox locations?

I too am having this problem after upgrading(?) to Windows 10.  The first attempt to reinstall PMAIL resulted in lost sub folders.  Pmail subsequently failed to run when clicked on.  So I uninstalled PMAI and attempted to reinstall it.  Now when it get as far as asking me where my mailbox is, it just exits and does nothing when when I click on OK. HELP!!!

I haven't got PMAIL re-setup yet, but the last time I tried it I had been thru the procedure to set up my MAILBOX (which I have done successfully countless times before).. When I tried to confirm my MAILBOX locations under OPTIONS, when I clicked the CHANGE NOW ikon, nothing happened.  I thought that PMAIL was supposed to exit then reload.  I am not having fun!  This procedure does not seem to be foolproof.  I knowthat most users would not try to customize their systems like this, but having come from mainframes and UNIX to this Windows crap, I still have it deeply engraved on my sub-consciious, " Save your data, put it somewhere safe!", and Windows is so fragile tthat I persist in my old habits.

It sounds like Pmail is installed somewhere inside of the \Program Files directory or some other file protected location that is preventing writes to its configuration files.

Found with Windows 7 or about to either use Pegasus deafult (c:\pmail) for both program and data or Unix style i.e. under \bin folder.

Stay away, run from Program Files or Program Files (x86) for any programs not from Microsoft.

Thanks.I generally do.  Problem now solved, all folders and sub folders are appearing as per.  Only remainungproblem is , in the Mail Box indow, I get all new mail that is arriving, but I cannot see all of the unsorted, unfilled emails that were in it before I upgrades and reloaded PMAIL.  The .CNM files all appear to be there (156 of them).  Is there an index file or something that is not held in Mail Box folder?

There is not an index file.  If you have 156 .CNM file then you should have 156 messages visible in your New mail folder window.  Confirm that the directory in which you see the 156 .CNM files is the same one shown as the New Mailbox Location shown by the Info button.  If it isn't, copy or move them there.

Thanks Brian.  Apart from this problem, I did have PMAIL up and running this morning.  Now , when I click on the PMAIL ikon on my desktop, or if explicitly try to run Pmail, all I get is amomentary flash on the screen, then nothing.  I have tried to do an update, which was aparently sucessful, but I still cannot run PMAIL.  aAny suggestions?  Is the re a flag stored somewhere in thePMAIL flags that needs to be cleared?  Just before lunch my PC did go down and I had to reboot, so something could have been left hanging.

The display of the splash screen followed by nothing is an indication that Pegasus Mail can not read the configuration setting from the mailbox directory.  This will happen when the mailbox is on a mapped drive path and that drive is not available, either physically or the result of a failed drive mapping.

and how do I remedy a failed drive mapping Brian?  I'm all at sea here, this Windows rubbish leaves me cold I'm afraid.  Now UNIX, that I could live with!  When I reload PMAIL now from the W32-472, the load appearsto go OK,but still when I click on the PMAIL Desktop icon, nothing but a quick flash on the screen happens!

Make a copy of the file PMAIL.CFG from the \Programs directory (C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS by default) then open it with a text editor.  The path contained in this file is where Pegasus Mail is looking for the mailbox directory (ies?).  See if you can navigate to it using a file explorer.

How many users and identities do you have in Pegasus Mail?  I ask because it is often easier to start from scratch when in a situation where an installation has gone really sideways.  Getting a clean installation working and then restoring mail data from a previous mailbox is sometimes the best way to go. The difficulty of doing this depends on the number of users and identities.

Hi Brian, there are two instances of the file path in that file.  Should they both point to the same directory?  I am te only user on this PC, and what you suggest is exactly what I have done.  In the past this has not been a problem.  The only differences this time are that now I am using Windows 10, and not I have only one very large disc (which holds the C: drive and therefore my personal data files.  I have always had at least two discs so that I could separate systems files from data files (mainframe and UNIX background).

Normally yes.

The fact that you no longer have two discs is why you are experiencing problems.  Keep in mind that most of the configuration files are stored in the mailbox directory and many of them contain paths.  The mailbox location has changed from E: to C: but I suspect that some of those paths are still pointing to E:.

Are you willing to start from scratch and give it another go?  A new installation will re-use the existing bad configuration files unless specific steps are taken so if you want to go this route I will provide more details.

I will need to know the path to the current Pegasus Mail \Programs directory (where your shortcut points to for executing winpm-32.exe) and the current path to the Pegasus Mail \Mail directory.

You will need an intact mailbox directory from which to retrieve mail data.

There is a whitepaper posted in the downloads section of this site that details the files to restore after a new installation.  Take a look at it so you have an idea about the process.

thanks for all the replies...

I came across this http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html

mentioning old subfolders having extensions.PMI and PMM

You can use this searchprogram on your harddisk to find it, even in recycle bins

https://www.voidtools.com/Everything-1.3.4.686.x86-Setup.exe

Now I need to figure out how to put back these PMM and PMI files...

the mail I still see was the mail from before my problems.

Home mailbox location: E:\pegasusmail\MAIL\ADMIN
New mailbox location: E:\pegasusmail\mail\Admin

But I need to get back to my old subfolders. These have extension .PMM and .PMI - and I found these in C:\$Recycle.bin - how to put these back?

thanks Aderoy, you mean : don't install PMAIL under program files?
