Hyperlinks failing to open in browser

Michael,

is your DNA connected to this forum? :) I just was busy for a minute to edit my postings a little bit and your answer is already there ....

The problem of windows explorer opening one's home-directory instead of one's system browser opening a web-address is not related with my system because it is "outdated". People with all possible setups complain and seek help for that matter on the internet, in many if not most cases because they want their portable browser installation (whatever brand) to be used as system browser. I went there for help before I posted here.

Hello!

PM (4.72) worked without flaws with regard to opening hyperlinks in my (system-)standard web-browser until recently.

I decided to install another instance of my preferred web-browser (opera 12.18) in a separate location and wanted it to become the new standard browser.

The first thing I did was to tell the new installment that it is from now  on the default browser system-wide.

This works as expected for example from within windows explorer (entering e.g. www.google.at in the adress-bar) and also from some but not all programs.

Question A: Why is it that some programs do not realize that the program responsible for htttp:.... has changed? How can I solve this?

PM is among them, but shows a strange behavior compared to the other programs which still open the "old" standard browser.

PM now for some strange reason opens  windows explorer with my personal home-directory focused ...

Question B: What can I do to resolve this problem within Pegasus Mail?

I already changed the setup in PM insofar as I directed PM to use the browser at a certain location (there is an option to enter the path). But the result is the same.

In other words, from the point I changed my standard browser PM is unable to open hyperlinks, it opens my user/homedirectory in windows explorer, no matter whether it is directed to use os' setup or whether it uses the complete path given.

Edit: OS is Windows XP

We have also seen instances where changing the system default browser then changing it back fixes the problem.  It's as if the installer of the of newly installed browser doesn't do a complete job of setting itself as the default browser requiring a kind of reset of the system default browser to finish the job.

Michael, Brian!

None of the suggestions worked, but I found a solution and still a bug.

1. I observed by using  this tool (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/reg_file_from_application.html) what my non-portable installed browser does in the registry when I configure it to be the system-wide browser. I then just changed where reasonable all references to the exe-file with the correct path of my portable browser installation.

Now all programs used the portable browser - except PM.

But I found the culprit: it is the extension "IErenderer".

Solution at the moment: When deactivated PM falls back to the standard (bearhtml?) display of html-emails and everything is working fine now.

I am going to contact the author of ierenderer to have a look .....

Thank you for trying to help,

cheers!

Try the most recent version first.

Big word for small issue: Did you try Brians suggestion which doesn't require fiddling around with the Registry? The proper way of checking, changing and setting default applications in Windows goes (in German) via Einstellungen => Systemsteuerung => Software => Programmzugriff und -standards festlegen. Under Benutzerdefiniert (see below) you can change the Standardwebbrowser. As Brian already suggested try switching to Internet Explorer and back to your personal preference afterwords to fix your issue. In some cases it might also be required to restart Windows, but at least Pegasus Mail. And: Did you ensure Pegasus Mail points to the same browser on Tools => Options => Hyperlinks (either by path or "automatically"). Try switching them as well at least for testing.

Michael,

Thank you for still trying to solve the problem which, as I've written, does not longer exist.

I also thanked you and Brian for your suggestions and told you that none of your suggestions solved the problem.

I don't want to start a rather unnecessary discussion that might lead to bad feelings, but I dont't get it why you classify the outcome of following your (both) suggestions as "big word for small issue". It was no small issue as can be deducted from the very outcome of following your very suggestions, which did not work, which I reported back. I also reported in my first posting that I am aware ot the automatic mode of pegasus to find the "sytem browser" and by also directing pm to use a browser at a certain path and that I tried both methods for no avail.

So to solve question A I had to think the other way around how to setup the system (registry) with the correct values at the correct places in the registry by observing what opera does when it is installed in non-portable mode, compare this with what the portable installation does when directed to act as system-browser, realizing that the portable installation does not setup the same number of entries in the registry I acted accordingly. This solved the problem for all programs system-wide, except PM. To solve question B I just had to disable ierenderer (which of course is of latest version) and voila PM now works perfectly in both modes (automatic and directed to path).

So the lessons learned for me are:

- opera (12.18) installed in portable mode wrecks up the registry somehow when directed to act as system browser

- telling the system via the system route (and IExplorer) to use a portable installation of opera does not help (at least in my case)

- IErenderer for an unknown reason is somehow overriding PM's due capability to use a correct portable installation of opera as system browser

Again, I really appreciate your (and everybody's) time and effort to help and will do so in the future, but I just don't get it and I had to answer anyway out of respect ....

Please no bad feelings!

Well, since you're the only person reporting such an issue on an outdated system using a rather special setup I still regard it as small, sorry ...
