How to transfer messages from Gmail(IMAP) to local Pegasus folders?

Pegasus mailstore = Pegasus mail folders under "My mailbox" in the folder list.  They contain all of the messages stored in Pegasus Mail on the local PC.

Archive database = A copy of mail data stored as an archive.  Archived messages can then be deleted from the mailstore so as to reduce the number of messages.

I started using Pegasus Mail in January 1996 and for 15 years kept all important messages in local folders. When I changed computers in June 2011 I operated the new computer for five years until now without Pegasus -- collecting 58,585 messages in Gmail.

Now I have installed Pegasus(v4.71) and have my original emails in their folders plus the newer messages in Gmail(IMAP) "folders." My goal is to store the "keepers" (a minority of the messages) locally in Pegasus folders.

I am not familiar - or don't remember - with how to navigate this situation, but I think I must search Gmail for messages with keywords, select them, and transfer the "hits" into Pegasus trays. (I am rusty in navigating Pegasus.)
How should I go about doing this?

Also I have found that after selecting the Gmail folder "All Mail" and waiting a long time for it to load, I must reload "All Mail" again if I open another folder.
How can I avoid this?

Also, how can I make messages delete from the Gmail server when I store them in Pegasus folders -- if possible?

On second thought:

#1 If I switch from IMAP to POP3, would I be able to switch back if I want to?

#2 Is the change in settings on both the server and the Pegasus client? That is, is it possible to access Gmail/IMAP with my laptop's browser and also connect POP3 with Pegasus on my desktop computer?

There is no either/or.  You can use either at will.

Accessing via a browser is not IMAP; you're just accessing via the Google webmail interface.  Regardless, if POP3 leaves message on the server then they can be accessed by webmail or by another client via IMAP.

Thanks Brian, I did not know that POP3 and IMAP configurations can be in effect concurrently.

So, I will continue to access Gmail with Firefox on both desktop and laptop computers by the Google webmail interface.

I will change Pegasus to stop using IMAP and use POP3.

I have set the Gmail server-side settings to the following:

Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 5/10/11
   * "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)"
When messages are accessed with POP "archive Gmail's copy."

Status: IMAP is enabled
   * "Enable IMAP"
When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:
   * Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.
When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
    * Archive the message (default)
Folder Size Limits
   * Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder (default)

Next will test.

Just to be clear, I rarely use IMAP.  I am familiar with the concepts and have used it on occasion but I am far from an expert.  I suggest starting a new discussion if you run into issues specific to IMAP.

This error is while trying to use POP3. With the identity = Gmail, I used the [internet options][Start setup wizard] to create a POP3 connection. Then [file][selective mail download].

#1 What is happening here? What to fix?

#2 A second question: I have almost 60,000 messages on the Gmail server. I don't want such a huge list of messages all at once to select from. Can I control the selection list with labels on the messages on the Gmail server?  Or sort them first? What other technique might I use about that?

If you haven't already done so, go to Help > Help index then read the topic called "Selective downloads'" and see if anything there gives you a clue about what is going on.

As for your second question, a POP3 download will only check the Gmail inbox.

Keep in mind that the functionality of the Pegasus Mail new mail folder window is negatively affected once the message count exceeds 700.  At some point beyond that it becomes unable to self-refresh.  This is not a message count limit, just a folder window functionality issue.  Closing then opening the new mail folder will refresh it.

I think I will try to use my Firefox browser to label all messages in Gmail's "all mail" folder as read. This should cause Pegasus' [selective mail download] to neglect them. I can choose which messages to show themselves to Pegasus by doing a bulk Gmail search on keywords and marking the found messages as unread.

#Q When Pegasus opens a downloaded message will that mark the copy on the server as read?

The read flag set at the Gmail server is not recognized by Pegasas Mail POP3 nor does Pegasus Mail POP3 change that flag when retrieving messages. Your original post indicated that you wanted to delete messages from the Gmail server once downloaded.  If you are now leaving them read the help file about the "Download only unread mail..." setting located in the Download controls tab of the POP3 host configuration for an explanation of how this works.

There is a function called server side filtering in Pegasus Mail.  Its configuration is also located in the Download controls tab of the POP3 host configuration.  This is another aspect of Pegasus Mail for which I have minimal knowledge and no experience.  I do extensive filtering but all on the client side.  It might be worth checking out the help file and manual to see if this might be of any help.

Finally, you could create a new mail filter in Pegasus Mail that always moves messages to a  folder, say one named "From Gmail".  You then execute a download and go to bed.  All of the messages should get download and automatically moved to the "From Gmail" folder from which you can manipulate them as needed.  A concern is whether those 60.000 messages would exceed the 2GB folder file size limit.  You probably would need to create a number of new mail filters to distribute messages to numerous folders, perhaps by date.

If you setup Gmail for IMAP, you can copy the messages from Gmail into a local Pegasus mailstore. Have been doing this for a few years so I could place into my archive datastore. You will need to also setup a IMAP profile for Gmail.

If you subscribe to all Gmail folders, select the 'All mail' folder and copy into existing local Pegasus mail folder (create a Gmail folder and place others within so to avoid the 2 GB boundary).

I have set up IMAP but I am not sure I am using it correctly. I can drag messages from Gmail to Pegasus folders, but Gmail loads & sorts again every time I click on a Pegasus folder to open it. How can I prevent this?

Also, when Gmail starts an undesired long sort -- is there a brake switch?

Also, I don't understand "(create a Gmail folder and place others within so to avoid the 2 GB boundary)".

How can I learn about this? I have over 3GB in Gmail.

A drag means you are moving messages out of Gmail to a local Pegasus Mail folder.  The IMAP connection then syncs to the mailbox on the Gmail server with the changes.  Consider copying instead of moving.

I believe aderoy meant to suggest creating a tray called 'Gmail" and then creating folders inside of that tray for the messages.  You would then distribute the messages from Gmail into these folders in whatever manner is meaningful to you as a way to prevent any of the Pegasus Mail folders from reaching the 2 GB limit.

What would be some examples of ways to specify and copy what goes into the created <2G folders?

Is it possible in Pegasus to do a global search of the Gmail All Mail folder like it is within Gmail?

Thanks, that explains at least part of what I experience.

But there might be syncing when there is nothing to sync. I selected some emails in All Mail. Then I selected a Pegasus folder but it wouldn't paste. Then I selected All Mail again and it went through the long load and sort for no apparent reason. Whatever I am doing wrong, it is impossible to work with the interface because it is continually locked up while it loads and sorts.

Edit: Then without doing anything else, I selected All Mail again and it went through the sync again. I think it must sync whenever a new message is received on the Gmail server followed by my selecting All Mail.

Folders can be whatever is meaningful to you.  Maybe you create one for each year.  Whatever you do isn't permanent.  Once they are in the Pegasus Mail mailbox you can manipulate them further as you like (optionally using filters to automate it).

Unfortunately, you've reached the limit of my IMAP knowledge and experience.  I live in the POP3 world, rarely using IMAP.

If you haven't read the help information associated with the Performance tab of the IMAP profile it might provide some insight.

I appreciate the help here. I have been able to set up folders on the Gmail server by browser, populate them with messages by searching, and have them show up in Pegasus.

My next step will be to make the folders that I specify to automatically update. I see that Pegasus has filtering and Gmail has filtering. I will study them both unless one of them is advised.
