Sending Emails in Plain Text (not in html)

Thanks again Paul, sounds as if I might now have cracked it.

Many thanks to you, Shades and Brian for your help.

<p>Thanks again Paul, sounds as if I might now have cracked it.</p><p>Many thanks to you, Shades and Brian for your help.</p><p>Chris </p>

I am using Pegasus 4.72.572 on a Windows 10 computer.  How can I send emails in plain text, please, as I appear to be sending them in html?

I recently joined a mailing group hosted by RootsWeb and whereas I noticed that emails I originate are posted, emails to someone else's postings that I reply to do not appear.  I have, of course, ensured the email replies I am sending are correctly addressed.

I posted a message to the group asking why this was happening and received the following reply:

"When replying to a list message you must ensure that your email is being prepared in Plain Text.  The size greatly increases when it is in HTML format.  You might be getting away with HTML format for small messages that you create because RootsWeb do use a converter program to remove the HTML and reduce the size, usually by about 80%.  However, the size of the message is checked before doing the conversion, not afterwards. So always use Plain Text. "

I have been through the Pegasus Help File and searched this forum but have been unable to find out how to ensure my emails are sent in plain text.

Thanks for any help.

Go to Tools / Options / Message formatting, and check the box "Disable all text styling options..."

Thanks Paul but I already have that box checked!  I also have the "Do not display the editor 'styles' toolbar" and the "Always paste plain text in preference to styled text" boxes checked.

If you are using multiple identities be sure the "Disable all text styling options..." setting is selected in the identity from which you are replying to the list.

Another setting that controls HTML is the reply option: "For replies to HTML, preserve original's formatting"

That reply you received from the group sounds like a canned response and not specifically identifying the problem with your messages so consider sending a reply and BCCing yourself to see of there is indeed an HTML part.

Finally, if you are receiving posts to the group via email it is possible that posts are not sent back to the poster (could be a configuration option).  If there is web access to the postings check to see if yours are there.

It is Identity specific, so if you use a different identity for that mailing list ensure it is checked in that one.

I've just tried it and it works for me.

Hi

I use Peg 4.72.572, & post/reply to soc.genealogy.britain (which IIRC is RootsWeb based) but have not seen this problem, I have had occasionb when repyling to an HTML only message no matter what settoings I have it still sends in RTF (or worse HTML)

Maybe if you post this query toto teh WinPmail mailing list

PM-WIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU

We could see if you post/reply Plain / RTF / HTML

Thanks Brian.  I am not using multiple identities.  I have unchecked the "For replies to HTML, preserve original's formatting" option.  I will try a reply and BCC myself as you suggest.  I have checked the web access for the group and my emails are not there.

I will report further how I get on.

Thanks Paul, but I'm not using a different identity.

This problem only started occurring a couple of months ago when some changes were made on RootsWeb as to how the group was set up.  Before that, I had been using the group for over ten years without any problems.

That's strange Shades that your group, also on RootsWeb, doesn't have this problem.

This is a personal email I received from the group's administrator about the problem:

"When replying to a list message you must ensure that your email is being prepared in Plain Text.  The size greatly increases when it is in HTML format.

"You might be getting away with HTML format for small messages that you create because RootsWeb do use a converter program to remove the HTML and reduce the size, usually by about 80%.

"However, the size of the message is checked before doing the conversion, not afterwards. So always use Plain Text."

I will do as you suggest re PM-WIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU.

The message suggests that messages aren't rejected because they are HTML but because of their size.  Check with the administrators what the maximum size allowed is.

Are your messages particulaly big or have additions (signatures etc.) ?  There is no evidence from what you have posted that you are in fact sending HTML messages.

Thanks again Paul.  I will check the size as you suggest but believe it must be quite large as, over the years, there have been some quite big emails posted, and certainly much bigger than I normally send.

I have posted an email to PM-WIN@LISTSERV>UA>EDU as you suggested.  Can you tell if that is in HTML?

Thanks

It was Shades who suggested it, but it is in plain text only.
