Synchronising laptop and PC

Thank you Brian. I didn't know that, although I was going to experiment with different options, as I was sure it should be possible. I'm about to head away for two weeks where I will be running the business via my lap top. I will be interested to see if it all works out as smoothly as I hope. Looking good so far!

I'm chasing advice as to the best way to utilise Pegasus when my business is split between a desktop and a laptop.

I've been using Pegasus for twenty years and I've always maintained all the files on a single desktop machine. If I look at an e.mail on my phone, it's not deleted and still downloads to the PC. A potential problem occurs if I reply from the phone but I avert this by CC'ing myself to ensure a copy goes back to the PC.

Recently, I've found that I'm using a laptop in the field far more than before. To date, I haven't installed Pegasus, or any other e.mail program, on to the lap top but when the option is a phone, it is obviously the better  machine to use. Why punch away on a phone when there is a keyboard to hand?! My question is what is the best way to utilise the lap top for my e.mails, whilst keeping an overall record on the PC? Is there a way to ensure that the replies from the laptop are copied into the same file as replies from the PC? Most of our data storage now is on cloud and I'm wondering if it is practical to shift my P.Mail file there and connect to it from whatever device is to hand?

If these questions seem confused, it is because their author is confused. I have a huge respect for the  capabilities of Pegasus, I've never even scratched the surface of the filtering. I'm thinking others must have been in this position and I'm anxious to hear how it worked out.

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy solution without a change from POP3 to IMAP.  Accessing mail via IMAP means all mail stays on the server where it is available to any device.

I use a combination of the two, similar to what you are doing now.  In my case, my primary laptop accesses via POP3 but leaves a copy on the server.  My secondary laptop accesses via IMAP.  This works fine for incoming mail but copies to self are a problem just as you described.  I don't access mail with my phone so I can live with how I have it now but you may need to make the switch to IMAP.

Thanks for the reply Brian. Do you think it would work if I were to take my entire P.Mail folder and re-locate it to my sync folder, or would that totally confuse everything? Or could I just locate my mail storage folders in a Sync folder? Sorry if these are silly questions but I'm not sure exactly how Pegasus works. My thought is that currently my Sync folder keeps a common record of nearly everything else and seamlessly updates any changes made. Could it not do the same for mail?

Pegasus Mail requires exclusive access to file in the mailbox directories which can be problematic when syncing tries to occur while Pegasus Mail is running.  It could work if you do manual syncs only when Pegasus Mail is closed at both ends.  There wouldn't be any need for the whole \PMAIL directory though, just the mailbox directory(ies).

Keep in mind that a mailbox directory sync also means the both ends have the same configuration settings, the same filter rule, the same POP3 and SMTP host files; they'll be like identical installations from a user standpoint.  The Pegasus Mail installs would need to be in identical locations on both ends as well.  One other thing to consider is that if corruption occurs on one end it will be duplicated on the other end as well.

Trying to duplicate a mailbox is not a route I would go unless it is a very low volume mailbox.

Ah-ha, thank you. Sounds as though it would be possible, but would require more time than I have available to set it up and get working smoothly. I can see issues with the sync folder clashing with Pegasus.

Plan B is that  I'm thinking that  I have some spare e.mail addresses. I could set up a permanent BCC to one and then use the filtering on my main PC to simply shift those messages into the same folder as all my other "copies to self".

Well, my respect for Pegasus continues unabated. I set up a virtual e.mail address called "copies@". I then put this address as a permanent BCC for every work email sent from the laptop. On my main PC I've set up a filter that looks for  "copies@*" in headers and moves them over to my "copies to self" folder. Works perfectly.

Only tricky bit was getting the filter to work as I was initially trying to use "Headers" and BCC is not on the list. "Expression" did the trick though. The only thing I'd have liked to have done differently would have been to apply the filter as the mail downloaded, rather than when I close the new mail folder. Not sure if this is possible. Welcome any advice on this point.

FYI: New Mail > On folder open filters act on messages as they are downloaded.
