Deleting Messages from New Mail Folder Going VERY Slow Recently

[quote user="Brian Fluet"]

Open Windows Defender Security Center, and then select Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings > Add or remove exclusions

Under Add an exclusion, select the files, folders, file types, or process. The exclusion will apply to subfolders within a folder as well.

Using  v4.72.572 for 4 users on my new computer with Windows 10. This PC has an SSD and most actions happen really fast.

I've been using Pegasus for 10+ years and noticed 4 days ago that deleting emails from the New Mail Folder has started to take a long time. (If I delete 7 or 8 messages, it can take 20 seconds.)

This happens for all 4 of the users. Deleting mail from other folders happens almost instantly.

Any suggestions?    Thanks

My initial thought was a problem with the deleted messages folder but those are user specific so a problem with one wouldn't affect 4 users.  Unfortunately I don't have any other ideas.

You don't mention a LAN so I assume 4 users on a local installation of Pmail, mailboxes on the local SSD.

I should clarify, I'm are talking about one computer with 4 mailboxes that I keep open at the same time.

I noticed it when deleting emails from my New Mail Folder from my primary account, but was surprised to see it happening for the other 3!

So, with 4 instances of Pegasus Mail are running, each as a unique Pegasus Mail user, then it is indeed surprising that you experience the slow deletes on all users.

I wouldn't expect the number of running instances to impact this but have you tested with one instance running just to see?

You are using 4 instances of Pmail simultaneously? We are using Pmail also in a multi-user environment, where different users are starting their own instance from one and the same server drive, but on their single computers.

I, as the admin, start different times a day a second instance by the start option "-ms", but more than 2 instances I've never tried. I could imagine that this could cause to some oddities.

Another thought: Try to switch off your Anti-virus software or exclude the Mailbox folder from processing by AV software (of course not recommended). We experience problems after replacing our server. The new Windows Server 2016 brings Windows Defender with it. And it is always slowing-down the processing of mails. In the meantime I have excluded the Pmail mailboxes from processing by Defender at the server. This has solved it. And our mails are checked firstly by ISP and secondly by the local user AV software on users computers. This should be enough attention. Unfortunately Defender could not completely deinstalled. It is reactivating itself again and again. But excluding folders works.

Cheers

Running one instance is just as slow!

BINGO!!!!

Pegasus was working fine for the first 3 days on my new computer, but on day 4 I deleted McAfee A/V and activated Windows Defender. I just turned Defender off and my New Mail Folder is back to lightning speed.

I'm going back to Avast A/V that worked fine on my old PC.

Thanks a MILLION!!!!!!!!!!

I'm using Windows Defender without a problem.  I have the mailbox directories excluded from scanning.

Very interesting. You'd still want to have it check what is arriving in the New Mail Folder, so how would you set that up?

Forgot to mention, I've been using the -MS option with 4 or 5 separate accounts for years and it never slowed anything up.

I don't see the need.  Message bodies don't carry a payload and attachments, when opened, get scanned when their temporary file is created.  For years I used Virscan in conjunction with an alternate AV product but reached a point some years ago of feeling this was overkill.  I'm the sole user and am overly suspicious so am now comfortable without Virscen.  The last time I looked at Virscan it supported Windows Defender so if you are comfortable with Windows Defender as your AV product and just want the security of attachment scanning as messages come in then Virscan is worth a look.  It's available from the downloads section of this site and its author is active on this forum.

Excellent point...I never thought of that.

How do you set Defender to have the mailbox directories excluded from scanning?

thnx

Open Windows Defender Security Center, and then select Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings > Add or remove exclusions

Under Add an exclusion, select the files, folders, file types, or process. The exclusion will apply to subfolders within a folder as well.
