New Mail folder not opening with tool bar icon

That is IT, exactly. Thank you. I didn't realise I had the folders window in Preview mode because I had made it narrow to hide the preview pane, so the button to change to LIST mode was not visible.

I found it, switched it and now I can have those other options selected and the New Mail folder opens as it should.

Thank you for your patience!!!

I have just installed PMail on a Win 10 laptop. For some reason, a click on the New Mail icon does not open the actual folder. Worked fine on my XP version of PMail.

What have I missed?

 Thank you.

Confirm that it is not opening off-screen.  When you think it should be open, go to Window > Tile and see if it becomes visible.

Also, on Win10 Pegasus Mail will not function correctly if installed anywhere inside of one of the Program Files directories.

Thanks for your suggestions.

PMail is not in a Program Files directory. It is separate - as it is on my desktop XP machine.

The new mail folder was NOT open off-screen. Have I asked the "New Mail" icon to open that folder somehow in a toolbar INI file??? I haven't copied that file over to the Win10 computer yet.

 Any other thoughts?

The .ini file is created upon install and modified by changes to configuration settings so it should exist.  I'm concerned though by your comment "I haven't copied that file over to the Win10 computer yet."  Did you install Pegasus Mail on the Win10 laptop or just copy files from the installation on the XP machine?  If you copied, and if your XP install still functions, fire it up then go to Help > About Pegasus Mail and click the Info button.  Note the paths for the Home mailbox location and New mailbox location and post them in a reply.  We can then advise you a the specific steps to take in order to duplicate the XP installation on the Win10 laptop.

If you want a clean install on the Win10 laptop let us know if you want to copy data from the XP installation or are starting fresh.

Sorry, I used the wrong term. The file I hadn't copied over was TOOLBAR.PM, not an INI file.

I did a new install on the WIN10 laptop. But, I thought perhaps the toolbar file had changed the meaning of the button. I have now copied that file over and it has changed the toolbar so that it is the same as my XP version. But, the button still doesn't OPEN the New Mail folder. It SELECTS it, but doesn't OPEN it.

Have I set some option to prevent that??? I've compared all of my options between the XP machine and the WIN10 machine, as far as I can tell. But, this one operation baffles me.

I also do not always get the New Mail sound. Is this related to WIN10, too???

This install on the Win10 laptop would have created configuration files one or more of which may have been overwritten with ones from the XP machine.  If you are willing to start from scratch please post the paths to the home and new mailbox locations on the XP machine.  It may be possible to copy the XP installation to the Win10 laptop with minimal effort.  Otherwise suggestions on how to fix the current problem will just be guesses (at least by me).  I'm calling it a night but will be back tomorrow.

Thank you, but I did do a new install. The only file I have copied over is the toolbar file. I have been using the new install for about a week.

However, I am happy to do a copy from XP tomorrow. I will post the paths about 10 am (Nova Scotia time).

Path on XP

C:\PMAIL\MAIL

Not sure of the filename for the New Mail folder

I notice that, on the Win10 machine, the folders are in

instead of just MAIL

I was wrong. The XP path is actually: C:\PMAIL\MAIL\NEW

I had to start over a year ago because my hierarchy went wonky.

I made the mistake of assuming the failure of the new mail window to open was with the new install.  Since it had worked but now doesn't then the problem may be with a new message file that Pegasus Mail is choking on as it scans all of the new message files to populate the new message folder window.  The goal is to rule this out or identify the problem file.  I strongly suggest that Pegasus Mail be closed when working in any of its directories with a file explorer.  Backup first is prudent.

Use a file explorer to navigate to your new mail directory (C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN).  First look for any zero byte .CNM files.  If found, delete them then start Pegasus Mail and see if the new mail folder window will open.  If you don't find any zero byte .CNM files, or the startup still hangs, go back to the new mail directory in the file explorer, sort the file list by date, then move to a temporary location all of the .CNM files newer than the last time Pegasus Mail started normally.  Pegasus Mail start>New mail folder open should now work.  Shut it down then move a few of the .CNM files back, keeping track of which ones you moved, test a startup.  Repeat until the new mail folder open hangs.  You then know it is a file in that last batch that is the problem.  Narrow it down from there.  Note that .CNM files are plain text files so can be viewed with a text editor.

If the new mail folder open should hang after moving out just the newest .CNM files then move them all out and test.  If startup is successful, follow the steps above to identify the problem file.

No .CNM files in that folder

The New Mail folder opens if I double click on it, just doesn't open when I click on the New Mail button on the toolbar.

The problem IS with the new install.

I don't even see any .CNM files on my XP machine (except for a bunch in a folder I called BAD once upon a time - must have had this issue before)

On my XP machine, I can open the New Mail folder by clicking on the button.

This issue has existed from the get-go with the WIN10 install. It worked on XP, but never on WIN10

Try again after launching Pegasus Mail without the inherited toolbar.pm.

Thank you.

Makes no difference.

I had the problem before I copied the toolbar.pm file over. I thought maybe I had done something in THAT file to allow the button to open the New Mail folder.

Any other ideas?

You said that you copied it over but I don't know if that means you overwrote an existing one or just copied one from the XP machine.  Regardless, a toolbar.pm doesn't exist by default.  It's created manually for the purpose of a customized toolbar.  If one still exists, rename it then start pmail and test.

There was no toolbar.pm on the WIN10 machine before I copied this one over. I created it myself years ago on the XP machine.

The problem with the button has existed from before I copied it over. I started this forum question before I copied it over. I have opened Pegasus with and without that file. Makes no difference.

Clicking on the button SELECTS the New Mail folder, but does not OPEN it. I have to double click on the folder itself to open it.

I can survive this. It just isn't the way that button used to work and is described to work in the tooltip.

Thank you for your thoughts. I think it's a bug related to WIN10.

On my Win10 install, when the folder window is in Preview mode, the button in the toolbar does a check for new mail but it does not open a new mail folder window (it only makes it the active folder).  When the folder window is in List mode, the toolbar button opens a new mail folder window and does a check for new mail.
