Windows 10 and PMail

I am surprised that no-one in this thread has mentioned that the main cause for this slow startup is the time taken to read all the messages in the NewMail directory (ie c:\pmail\mail\admin).

Every message gets to be read and a check is made to see if a line with X-PMFLAGS: exists in the headers of a message, if not a line that starts with: X-PMFLAGS: is inserted in the header lines of the message to record important information on the content of the message. In the NewMail files list, click on a message then click the menu button "Properties". Once that line has been inserted, the repeated analysis of the message is not required.

Secondly, there is a limit to prevent further scanning if there are more than approximately 500 messages in NewMail. Additionally, it should be noted that Filtering and Content Control (Spam detection) of the Newmail folder occurs every time Pegasus Mail starts, so it important to move messages to regular folders either manually or by setting up filters.

Finally, AV scanning only occurs when a message is actually opened.  Attachments are only scanned once, if Virscan extension is active. You will see a message on the Pegasus Mail status line (bottom of screen) stating "scan skipped - already scanned" when message is opened.

Just upgraded to Win 10 Fall Creator. PMail works fine but...

Why does it go through a very slow Locating Folders every time I launch it?

Appreciate your help.

It shouldn't do it every time but it should do it regularly.  If you were to open Pegasus Mail, not make any changes, close it, and then open it again you should not see a delay during the locating folders process.  When you see the delay, Pegasus Mail is reading all folder files entering pertinent data into a file named

You could also try to disable your AV software for testing purposes. Big Pmail folders need time to be scanned.

I thought it might have to do with Avast, because it was doing the same on Win 7. Then with the upgrade I uninstalled Avast and went with Defender, and it got worse, so you're obviously right, it has to do with the AV scans. What's peculiar is that some times from a shutdown reboot, it doesn't get caught locating folders and the same sometimes with a restart boot. Oh well. I thought that maybe MS had fulfilled their promikse (do they ever?) and built a strong, unintrusive AV that might be less instrusive than Avast. But no... and Defender cause other problems. I'll just drift back to Avast and live with which I'been doing for years from XP to 7 and now to 10. Thanks for your help.

It shouldn't do it every time but it should do it regularly.  An instance where it shouldn't do it is if you were to open Pegasus Mail, not make any changes, close it, wait about 30 seconds, then open it again.

When you see the delay, Pegasus Mail is reading all folder files to update a file named HIERARCH.PM which is used to display the folder list.  This happens on startup.  For me it happens almost every first startup of the day, regardless of whether it's my personal Pegasus Mail running on a fully up to date Win10 laptop or my office Pegasus Mail running on a Win7 desktop.

Are you experiencing the delay for the first time or does it seem worse since upgrading to Fall Creator Win10?  If the PC has not been fully shut down since the upgrade I suggest doing a cold boot.

I can confirm that the "start-up delay" is different over the day. The first time (or when I change to another user account) Pmail takes much more time until all mail lists within the folders are presented. The seconds start is much more faster. BUT, if I disable my AV software, Pmail starts fast every time, irrespective whether it is the first start or not. I assume, the AV software is caching different things. Try it Brian  [:)]

My office day, here in Germany comes to an end. Wish you a stressless rest of the working day.

Greetings

Joerg

I use Defender but have excluded my Pegasus Mail directories.  Keep in mind that attachments, when opened, are written as temporary files so are scanned at that moment.

Windows Defender, I agree with this use of excluding Pegasus Mail directories, but also add file type PM$ as these are working files for Pegasus Mail

Well, I reinstalled the latest version of Avast which disabled Defender and the locating-folders has been reduced to once a day plus a lot of other Defender interference has been eliminated. So much for MS enhancements.

Thanks everyone.
