Interim fixes to Pegasus in the last year ?

I have not heard whether you are using IERenderer or Bearhtml to do your html rendering.   Keying in Shift + F1 will display the renderer being used with its current version on your machine. Please report this value.

If you are using my Bearhtml I would ask that you go to your Bearhtml.ini  (in either c:\pmail\mail\admin or c:\pmail\programs  and update the line that starts with WantCSS= to WANTCSS=NO and then restart Pegasus Mail. The effect of this change is to turn off all the fancy text on the pages, images will remain the same. Please report what happens when you have made this change and restarted Pegasus Mail.

Alternatively with the message already opened, key in Shift + Ctrl + R until the status line on the bottom left of the screen says "CSS Disabled" and then re-open the problem message. If your system actually crashes, you will need to revert to the first method above. If it displays ok, please report this, thank you.

I have received a copy of your problem message and it displays normally with both fancy text and images, when using the latest version of Bearhtml (4.9.9).

Regards,

      Martin

First thanks to the forum for having the username that is user chosen rather than an email address. Long may this continue. To the 98% of web site designers who think that email address's are issued for life, in fact perhaps even tattooed onto your chest, let me abuse you of that notion. They can and do change for whatever reason and the amount of effort this has cost me to change my logins on over 600 sites makes me thankfull to sites who DON'T use the email address.

Onto my main reason for opening this subject. In the last year I have been getting the odd email that just won't open in Pegasus. The email frame pops up but that is as far as it goes. After about 30 seconds I then get Pegasus not responding and after another short period the entire screen greys out. Task manager allows me to close Pegasus but on a restart it does the same thing with the same email. I can check the email by opening it in Outlook (used for emergency use as it isn't a patch on Pegasus) to view the contents. So far I have just accepted this behaviour (happens about once a week and the emails, so far, are not important). My PC is at 1803 so I am wondering if there exists any of the following things -

a. A list of known issues with the various updates to Windows as they might pertain to Pegasus ?

b. A list of minor fixes that may pertain to Pegasus since 4.72. By this I mean changes to settings etc to fix known problems that might have occurred with Pegasus ?

c. Any suggestions as to things I should be looking at that might explain the above behaviour.

I am hanging on and hoping to see a new version soon. It was comforting to see a recent reply to a query from David Harris. I met him once at his house in Dunedin about 20-30 years ago when DEC still existed. Soon after I started using Pegasus. It is the oldest program I still use after I dropped Wordperfect.

If you didn't do this already can you please forward such a message to <beta-reports [@] pmail.gen.nz> with a proper subject and a text pointing to this thread here? Please note that for investigations we need the unmodified message attached to a new one as offered by the forwarding dialog.

Michael,

I have seen this symptom on my Bearhtml renderer client.  I noted that it started just after I received another mandatory update from Microsoft. While patience can be rewarded, I am beginning to suspect something about downloading images may be involved.  My logging shows up to 30 seconds for some downloads to complete. This may be due to normal fragmented downloads doing things like unloading Dlls between parts of a download.

I will see if I can trace this in more detail. Could you forward me the Url for the original message please ?

Martin

Whom do you ask to do this? And what URL are you refering to?

Actually I think I screwed up a little here and didn't give you all the details. I am reasonably certain that the messages that fail do have graphics and jpgs as part of the message. Some emails do the same thing - come up with Pegasus not responding then a long wait and then finally the email completes downloading. With a few of these it just greys out as per my original entry and hangs Pegasus. Some messages with a ton of graphics download okay but others with less graphics fail. My guess (and I do not know much about this) is that a few emails have some graphics contents or are written in some way so they contain an element that Pegasus is not handling well so it hangs.

Originally I though it might be something to do with changing ISP (7 months ago) and that they had some sort of issue with downloading the body of emails but I vaguely remember that I did have a few messages doing the same thing before that. That was some months ago. It is almost as if Pegasus is timing out for some reason and then hanging. But Outlook doesn't do it so maybe some interaction between Pegasus and Windows + upgrades ?

I have a total of 10 PCs at home. Only one runs Pegasus but I have a habit of when a Win upgrade comes out I take a little time and deliberately force the upgrade (I don't want them happening randomly and maybe holding me up when I want something in a hurry). Every PC handles the upgrade slightly differently. Odd things just stop working and one PC needed driver upgrades but the failure I was having wouldn't let me apply them. I had to start from scratch, load the new drivers then perform the upgrade. That has appeared to work but took 3 days to sort (and interestingly the 6 driver downloads were all dated just before and just after the release date of 1803). The PC I use Pegasus on was a Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade originally but has had a full reinstall of Win 10 about 12 months ago. I took that time to get rid of a lot of old programs etc so it is a relatively clean install. So far apart from resetting a few things with an upgrade this PC has had a reasonably good response to upgrades. Possibly with the exception of Pegasus handling a few email downloads.

Before we continue guessing around what's going on please take a look at Pegasus Mail's status bar (leftmost section) which is the place where it tells you what's going on in the background: No matter which HTML renderer you're using it will tell you whether it's downloading graphics or not. If using IERenderer ist even provides numerical status codes which might help in debugging. Next thing to try would be to disable all automatic image downloads completely so you get a feeling whether this is the issue at hand or not: This can be done on Tools => Options => Message reader. You may then start allowing only certain senders to download images automatically. And finally, do you have Tools => Options => Advanced settings => Load Windows Internet Services ... set to Always? If not you're strongly recomended to do so and restart Pegasus Mail. any other setting may stop POP3 message downloads completely except for the very first one during a session.

Okay thanks. My last post "disappeared" for over a half day "pending moderation" as well.

Looking forward to eventually seeing it.
