Mail in inbox not opening ver 4.80

Emails are being received but double clicking on the email or single click and Open does not open the email and after a short while closes Pegasus. Version 4.80 reinstalled but does the same thing. This has been working and now stopped. Any ideas please.

Is this supposed to mean "no reader window is opening"? If so, and you can still read these messages in preview mode, it most likely means the window is opening outside of the visible parts of Pegasus Mail's main window. Clicking Tile or Cascade in Pegasus Mail's Window menu should bring it back I guess.

Many thanks for your response.

I notice that emails that have no icon to the left of the tick denoting read, open correctly while those with an icon (looks like 2 overlapping rectangles) there will not open and in fact after a short while of the spinning wheel closes Pegasus.

Going to cascade or tile displays the following for each message that does not display normally:-

"Message preview is disabled because Pegasus Mail has detected that
it terminated abnormally the last time it ran.

If an abnormal program termination is caused by the contents of the
first message in the folder being previewed (as can sometimes happen
with certain types of badly-formatted HTML message), then it may be
impossible to restart the program while the preview mode is on. For
this reason, the program automatically disables preview mode when it
detects that an abnormal termination may have occurred.

To re-enable the Message preview function, please go to the "Folders" menu
and select the "Preview mode" option."

Following the above and going to Preview Mode does not improve anything.

A further anomaly is that on opening Pegasus while being the only person using it I get a screen stating:-

"The mailbox you are attempting to open appears to be open in another process...."

Still puzzled as it was all fine a couple of days ago.

Further to the foregoing, if I look at these emails in the folders window and click on the "view attachments" icon and double click html I get to see the the email in a separate page, so the message is there but I am not able to view in the normal way,

This opens the html content in a browser, outside of Pegasus Mail.

That icon indicates that the message contains a plain text version and an html version. What version of IERenderer is installed and is it enabled?

To find the version, hover your cursor over the IERenderer icon in the main Pegasus Mail window toolbar (furthest to the right, looks like blue lower case "e" with the Pegasus flying horse superimposed on it).

To see if it is enabled, click on that IERenderer icon and look for a checkmark to the left of the "Use IERenderer" menu item (second from bottom).

This is normal whenever Pegasus Mail fails to shut down normally. There is a lock file in place whenever Pegasus Mail is running to help prevent multiple instances of Pegasus Mail from accessing the same mailbox. This lock file normally gets released during Pegasus Mail shutdown but an abend can leave it in place. Be aware that "normal" does not mean to disregard that warning. Always confirm that Pegasus Mail is not running before proceeding through that warning.

I shut down Peagus through File -> Exit but still get the locked message. I check using Task Manager but there is not Pegasus process there. How do I ensure Pegasus is closed properly and not locked.

I notice the emails are coming through where instead of seeing the body of the email they are coming through as attachments to the subject. I open the attachment, I see the body of the email.

Would removing Pegasus and re-installing sort this out. If so I see the emails are held in /admin and can be copied into the new installation. Where are the address books held so I can copy them into the new installation.

While I am about it, should I install 4.81 as the spell checker in my 4.8 will not add words to en-gb.dic. It does work if I manually add them to this file.

All you can do is use task manager to confirm that there is no running instance of Pegasus Mail.
Are you seeing any sort of error message when you close Pegasus Mail?
Have you made any changes to your anti-virus product.
Is the \PMAIL directory excluded from active scanning by your anti-virus product?

I suspect that these are messages that contain HTML only (no plain text content). To open the HTML version by default go to Tool > Options > Incoming Mail > Message reader and check the status of the following option "Where a choice of versions exists, display the fancy version". Enabling it will cause the HTML version to display by default. Optionally, the toolbar of a message reader window contains a "View" button which toggles between displaying the plain text version or the HTML version.

Still relevant is whether you have IERenderer enabled and what version you are running.

A reinstall is unlikely to solve the problem. It only replaces program files which are unlikely to be the source of your problem.

The 4.81 beta has been rock solid and fixed the spell checker issue you mentioned. I recommend it, but check the following conditions to see if they pertain to you.

  1. Your Home and New mailbox locations are different. To check this go to Help > About Pegasus Mail and the click the Info button. The resulting display will contain entries that show the path to the Home and the New mailbox location. If they are different, v4.81 may look in the wrong location for the POP3 and SMTP host definition files. There is a workaround if needed.
  2. You run Pegasus Mail with its main window, or any child windows maximized. The problem associated with this is that column width adjustments won't stick between sessions.

I have IERenderer 2.7.1.13 and the fancy text option ticked. I suspect the main problem is the Pegasus not closing and being locked with apparently no way of unlocking it seeing here is no reference to Pegasus in Task Manager.

Once you click the "Continue" button on the "Mailbox is locked" dialog, the lock is released and Pegasus Mail starts up normally, part of which includes setting the lock again. The fact that Pegasus Mail is not closing gracefully is a separate issue from any message display issue.

You have confirmed that you are using the current IERenderer version but not whether it is enabled, which is the default but is worth confirming.

One thing that has been know to interfere with the normal shutdown of Pegasus Mail is active scanning by an anti-virus/anti-malware program. Excluding the root mailbox directory and all subdirectories from active scanning is recommended. This insures no interference from the AV product that may grab for analysis any one of the numerous files Pegasus Mail is writing to during shutdown.

One queston regarding this observation: While seeing the "spinning wheel", what happens on Pegasus Mail's status bar bottom left? Does it display picture download status information? Or rephrasing in a more abstract way: Do you have auto-download of pictures enabled for HTML messages (Tools > Options > Message Reader > Display remote-linked graphics in messages set to "Automatically ..." )? If so give Pegasus Mail a try after changing it to "Manually ..." and maybe later on only allow downloads for selected sources to figure out any culprits which can be investigated for reasons causing your issues.
