Emails not sorting in correct date order

Hi all,

We have been using Pegasus for many years, and have always experienced the following problem. We are currently on 4.81.

We very often sort emails in a folder by date order (to see the most recent at the top). However emails are not sorted correctly. They often appear sorted correctly in chunks, but with multiple chunks so the most recent emails can be a long way down the list. We have large folders with thousands of emails in them, so when they aren't sorted correctly emails are hard to find.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so do they know a fix or workaround?

We have tried Reindex and Recover Deleted Space but this doesn't correct this.

Thanks!
Phil Castle

About which folder(s) are you talking? The new mail folder (INBOX) oder other folders - since the new mail folder sorts differently if unread mails are allowed to stay on top (you may enable this for each other folder as well).

And what do you mean by "chunks": Are you referring to group sorting? And if so, which kind of group sorting do you use?

And do you have timezone correction enabled?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for responding.

I am talking about folders within a Mailbox (not in New Mail).

Yes, we do have the GMT timezone fix.

I attach an image showing what I mean about chunks. The image is after I have sorted by date (twice, so it is descending). A bunch of emails are sorted by date correctly (from March 2023 to Nov 2001). Then it goes back to Sep 2024 and then next set is sorted correctly down to Oct 2001). Sometimes this happens a number of times so there are multiple "chunks" of emails like this.

I haven't ever seen anything like this nor heard about it before. What's the size of the folder, does it come close to the 2 GByte limit? Right click it and check the folder informtion for figuring out.

If it would only happen on top of the folder I would assume you've Sort unread before read enabled, but you would certainly be able to tell apart read ones from unread ones, I assume.

And be sure to check each folder for timezone correction to be enabled via PM's main menu > Folder (or > Messages in preview mode) since it can be set for each folder separately.

I have never seen anything like this either. I would be curious to see what would happen if some of the old messages and some of the recent ones were copied to a new folder, like the three above and the three below the red line, confirming that all are marked as read first.

Clue hunt:

Just for giggles, check the "properties" of the messages in the various misordered groups and see which, if any, are consistently and correlatively different than the others....

Another thing to try - create a new filing tray directly under "My Mailbox", and then a new folder under that filing tray, then move the date-goofed messages in a folder into the new folder and see if they can be ordered correctly now..

Something else to check - Right-Click the misordered folder, select Folder Information, and see if it's in a different location (other than *:\Pmail\Mail ?) than other folders that are sorting properly (if any)..

Thanks for the replies everyone. It looks like the problem is the sort-unread-before-read behaviour. I feel pretty stupid for not noticing it (but then I don't know why we have so many unread messages given that everything coming in is read).

It may depend on whether you're using preview mode: In this mode you can opt for messages being marked read when displayed whereas opening them in a reader window will always mark them as read. Go check Tools > Options > Preview mode settings and enable the last option if feeling better with doing so.

Yes, we do have the "Mark previewed messages as having being read" option checked. However, our emails go back to 2002 and have gone through multiple machines and Pegasus installations. I guess there have been periods of time (in the past) when that option was not checked. This will explain why we have periods of time when messages were not marked as read, and periods when they were.

Also, reindexing may uncheck the read flag if messages haven't been marked as read in the new mail folder already like messages being filtered directly to another folder before reading.

Why I said...

Just for giggles, check the "properties" of the messages in the various misordered groups and see which, if any, are consistently and correlatively different than the others....

i.e. "Has Been Read" box checked.. as it turns out... smile
(usually the folder lists how many messages are in it and how many are unread.. in this example, 2 of the 137 messages are unread..

..and the unread messages are bolded in the folder listing..)

Aye, I never paid any attention to it - bolded is the default (or was when I first installed it 30-some years ago), it made sense and I've never changed it, hardly ever looked at it even, so I didn't realize it was configurable..

No matter how hard I try not to, I learn something new every day.. smile
