Yesterday my New Mail folder suddenly disappeared from view. I can't get it back by clicking on open/rescan new mail, nor with Ctrl-L. I can download a message into it, and it increments the total of new messages, I just can't see them! Can I restore it without removing Pegasus and reinstalling from scratch?

Sadly Brian this didn't work. I think you're right that it is opening off-screen, but I deleted the New mail= line and still not joy. Only references to new are

Exit Pegasus Mail.
Use a text editor like Notepad to open the state.pmj file located in your mailbox directory.
Locate the [Folder] section in the state.pmj file.
Delete the entry that begins with "New mail=".
Save and exit.

When you next start Pegasus Mail, the New Mail folder will open to its default size and location.

If you don't know where your mailbox directory is, open Pegasus Mail then use it Help pulldown menu and select "About Pegasus Mail..." Now click the "Info..." button. In the resulting display, look for the entry "Home mailbox location:". That entry will contain the path where the state.pmj file resides. Be sure to close Pegasus Mail before editing state.pmj.

Edit: I came back to apologize for jumping right to a solution without explaining what I think the problem is, which is that the new mail folder is opening off screen. This can be caused by using two monitors and having the new mail folder positioned on the secondary monitor at last shutdown but then opening it while only a single monitor is active. It can also be caused by corruption during the recording of the window size and position during shutdown. Either way, removing the entry in state.pmj that holds the invalid size and position values will reset them to their defaults on next startup.

Sadly this didn't work. I deleted

New mail=27,32,804,711,"146,265,148,0,73,0"

and left

QueueC:\PMAILNEW\MAIL=104,90,704,481
DraftC:\PMAILNEW\MAIL=5,5,497,336

but still no visible new mail window.

Just found that if I close all folders, then click on Open / Rescan New mail folder, it opens up all folders again. As if Open new mail folder and open all folders are doing the same thing.

These are related to the windows that display the list of Draft messages and outgoing Queued mail.

I am not aware of a way to open all folders so I am baffled by this.

If when you removed the "New mail=" entry from state.pmj you left a blank line, remove it. There should not be any blank lines.

Does it show up as an item in Pegasus Mail's Window menu of its main toolbar? If so, how about trying Cascade?

When I open Pegasus I can see one window headed Folders with all my folders. If I close it by clicking X at top right it disappears and the display is empty. If I click Work with your mail folders it comes back. If I close it again and click on Open or rescan your new mail folder it also comes back. It's like the New mail icon has somehow changed so it operates the Work with folders function. I know this doesn't make sense.

Cascade doesn't do anything ...

and when I close Pegasus again, there's still no New mail line in state.pmj

Would look at your PMAIL.INI file in your mail directory.
Assuming it is on C: drive like mine and I get these lines.
If you have a different drive letter use that.

Hi, yes, my PMAIL.INI is in C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN, along with 87 CNM files.

However it all worked fine until Friday 15 November when the newmail folder suddenly vanished from the Pegasus display window. I wondered if I'd hit some odd keyboard combination which knocked it off balance - I'm using Windows 11. Is this possible?

The "Work with your mail folders" button opens the Folder list window as you have noted. When running Pegasus Mail in List mode, the Folder window shouldn't open when clicking the "Open or re-scan your new mail folder" button. It will when running Pegasus Mail in Preview mode though, but it opens as a multi-pane window with the folder list on the left. Let us know if you are running in List mode (each open folder has its own window), or Preview mode (a multi-pane window).

As for the new mail folder window issue, try this...

• Close all Pegasus Mail windows.
• At the bottom right of the main Pegasus Mail window is a blue triangle button. If the triangle is pointing up, click it once so that it points down. This will open a window bar along the bottom of the main window. It will show open windows sort of like tabs in a browser. See if the New mail folder is there. If it is, try Window > Cascade again. If it isn't, confirm that the window bar is enabled by opening the Folder list window. You will see a 'Folder' item appear in the window bar. If that worked, attempt to open the new mail folder and then look at the window bar. You should now see the 'Folder' entry as well as a "New mail folder (x messages)" entry. If you do, try Window > Cascade again. If you don't, try the process again just to be sure because we might be in uncharted territory.

That said, I wonder if are encountering a hang due to a corrupted new message file. What you have described does not match the symptoms because last I knew, this problem prevented Pegasus Mail from functioning at all. It would simply hang while trying to open the new mail folder. It is worthwhile to rule out though.many messages in your new mail folder:

• Close Pegasus Mail and back it up.
• Use a file explorer to navigate to your mailbox directory (same one in which you found state.pmj).
• Look for any zero byte .CNM files. If found, delete them then test Pegasus Mail. If you don't find any, or the startup still hangs, go back to the file explorer and sort the mailbox directory list by date. Create a new directory named "CNM files hold". Locate and move to that directory all .CNM files dated one day prior to the last time Pegasus Mail started normally. Test Pegasus Mail. If all is well, shut it down then move a few of the .CNM files back, keeping track of which ones you moved. Test Pegasus Mail. Repeat until you encounter the problem. You have now isolated the problem to one of the files in the last batch that was moved. Narrow it down from there by moving them back out and then moving one at a time. Note that .CNM files are plain text files so can be viewed with a text editor which might help by allowing you to look at the content of each file and delete ones that you know you don't need.

Hallelujah! I switched from Preview to Classic mode and my New Mail is visible again. I'm not sure this has always been there - I've been using Pegasus for 25 years and never run across it before. Thank you so much for your time and patience.

I'm glad you have it sorted. Pegasus Mail is so powerful and flexible that it can sometimes be a challenge getting to the root of a support inquiry. That is what happened here and I feel bad that it took so long to figure it out. An odd thing though is that when Pegasus Mail is running in Preview mode, double clicking the new mail folder entry in the folder list will open the new mail folder in its own window. Perhaps you never tried that, relying instead solely on the "Open or re-scan your new mail folder" button which only opens the muti-pane Preview window.

Well, this is only true if the top message in this folder is a plain text message since rendering HTML messages triggered on first click will prevent the double click from coming into effect (unfortunately a long standing API issue in Pegasus Mail) - only hitting the Return/Enter key will do.

PS: Same thing applies to opening HTML messages in a reader window by double-clicking in preview mode.
