I found that AOL requires the creation of an app password in order to use IMAP. I assume this is true for POP and SMTP as well. You can find this in the web interface under profile-->security. Tracing was done via TCP logs (enabled in Internet Options), which showed failure to login. No help needed, just documenting this for the group.
