IMAP Error

After Pegasus has been idle for a while with connection to a couple of IMAP folders, for one in particular I get the following error.

"The IMAP server that manages this mailbox or folder has reported an error during the operation you have attempted to perform.

The operation cannot be completed."

I am not actually doing anything. I have to reopen the folder.

However as I test I opened Betterbird on the same mailboxes and had it opened at the same time and had no such problem.

Any idea how I can avoid this occurring, it occurs most days if I have Pegasus open for any length of time on that folder.

Thanks

Des

Can you provide more information about the account you are trying to reach like the email provider? Better yet, a session log would be very handy.

The provider is mail.com

I am waiting for it to error so I can capture a log.

The manual says log files are names TCPxxxx.WPM, however I can find no such files in the location indicated.

I can find TCP*.imap files and have found one that shows an issue, I have redacted username/password and attach here. Happy to provide any other logs that could help.

Unfortunately, there is some content in the manual that is out of date and you found some. The .WPM extension has been replaced with either of .pop, .smtp, or .imap in order to identify the protocol that created the log.

I don't use IMAP so regret that I can't provide any help.

Looking at mail.com IMAP settings suggestions, I found this:

Incoming mail: Server imap.mail.com with port 993 and check the option This server requires an encrypted conncetion (SSL/TLS)
Outgoing mail: Server smtp.mail.com with port 587 and the encryption method STARTTLS

Checking my own settings (Yahoo's), I'm using port 993 (same as) and SSL (different from STARTTLS). Pmail suggests a different port for STARTTLS. As mail.com support both security protocols I'd change it to SSL and test again.

Based on David Harris' answers in such cases it looks like all data have been successfully downloaded and the final error only occurs due to an unexpected termination by the IMAP server, but I'll ask him for comment about the final write error:

> OpenSSL write error (6) - error queue follows:

OpenSSL supplied no extended diagnostic information.
This usually indicates one of the following:
- The connection was improperly closed by the peer.
- A Network error external to this system occurred.

PS: Just guessing here: Are you using preview mode in Pegasus Mail and have Mark previewed messages as having been read on Tools > Options> Preview mode settings enabled? If so, the write attempt might be caused by Pegasus Mail trying to write this message flag.

The common ports are: POP3: 110 (unencrypted) or 995 (encrypted/SSL/TLS), IMAP: 143 (unencrypted) or 993 (encrypted/SSL/TLS), and SMTP: 25 (unencrypted, mail relay), 465 (encrypted/SSL/TLS, submission), or 587 (encrypted/STARTTLS, submission)
