I have tested POP3 polls to both of these IP addresses. Both worked for me. This seems to rule out my thought that perhaps a specific server was the cause of the problem.

I have not seen a report of this not happening to [gmx.xxx] accounts located in ouside the same IP ranges/region as the [gmx.xxx] servers.

I seem to have made some progress.
After clearing a few stored emails and pondering whether to delete my [gmx.xxx] accounts I decided to try once again.
So I went to my [PMail] settings and reset them, so to speak.
ie: changed them and then changed them back again.
Surprisingly, I actually managed to get POP3 and SMTP working at both my [gmx.net] and [gmx.com] accounts.
No idea why / how / what ...
Maybe they fixed something?

No luck with [IMAP] at the moment.

At least these POP3 and SMTP are working now.
Hopefully without further issues but given what has transpired, I would not bet on it.

These are the settings I used for both accounts with my PMail v4.73:

POP3 - Server pop.gmx.xxx     port: 995   Via direct SSL connect
SMTP - Server mail.gmx.xxx    port: 465   Via direct SSL connect
[x] Login to the SMTP server using a POP3 username / password
     From this POP3 definition: [POP3, account_name]
[x] Do not use CRAM-MD% authentication even if it is advertised

N.B. GMX suggested I enable two-factor authentication to resolve the reported authentication issues. That wasn't the problem, it seems. In fact, two-factor authentication appears to interfere with POP3, SMTP, and IMAP authentication. I had to disable it to regain control over my second GMX account. I haven't received any communication from GMX user support yet; I only noticed that the messages stuck in those accounts started appearing on my laptop. Not so bad, but their support is quite poor.

I still don't have a working IMAP profile.
Not a great loss for me as I have never really used it: webmail will do fine if/when I need to check whatever has been labelled SPAM is really SPAM.

On attempting to connect to an [gmx.xxx] IMAP profile I get this from PMail:

My settings are these:

Just checked and IMAP on both accounts is working now.
So problem solved.

Frankly, in all the years I have used these two [gmx.xxx] accounts (mid 2016?) nothing like this ever happened, at least that I noticed.
They have not had much (daily) use so all in all, I suppose it makes for a decent average.

To keep in mind:
[gmx.xxx] account creation is now restricted by originating IP region.
ie: if you delete it, you will not be able to recover it.
