Pegasus Mail Suggestions
Cannot install to XP

Hi. I run two PCs, one with up-to-date Linux, the other XP which is full of valuable legacy programs.

I have been using Yahoo mail to link the two, but now cannot sign-in to Yahoo on the XP one.

Thus I was delighted to find Pegasus.

Save that when I click to run the installer exe – there are a couple of twirls than nothing. I found two older versions – same type of failure.

Any ideas ?

Roger

XP SP3 is the oldest supported OS (with reduced functionality), at least according to the pmail.com downloads page. I will try to find out if that is still the case.

FWIW, Pegasus Mail will run on Linux under Wine. If you are interested in pursuing that, make a post in the Pegasus Mail > Community Discussions and Support category.

AFAIK the Inno installer used for the first step(s) of the install doesn't support XP anymore, this has been discussed a while ago by the beta testers. Checked the archives and found a related thread from Dec 22.

Be nice if the Downloads page could be amended

I have been in contact with the developer about this. His response was the v4.80 "might" still work but newer versions definitely will not. The newer versions use libraries and work to mitigate UAC issues that did not exist in XP. He is aware of the outdated downloads page on PMAIL.COM.

That said, even if 4.80 will install, I don't know what the ramifications are for the included installation of IERenderer. If it installs, it won't be able to be upgraded, which IMHO is important for the numerous fixes and improvements made since the 4.80 days.

Thanks again Brian. Our posts crossed, I think.

I tried 4.81 and 4.52, so I think I'm stuffed.

Roger

@roger_wilding@yahoo.com , FWIW, I am running a number of legacy programs on Win 11. I don't 'install' any that can be run as portable. They reside in C:\Apps. Those that must be 'installed' get installed there. Avoid installing in either of the Program Files directories. I recommend Pegasus Mail be installed to the default of C:\Pmail for ease of support and troubleshooting since that is the assumed installation location by support folks.

I don't recall having to set a compatibility mode for any of them but that is available as well.
