Pegasus Mail Frozen

Suddenly today, my Pegasus Mail program has 'frozen'. Although I can highlight a message or a folder, clicking on it doesn't open it, or do any of the other menu commands open, apart from those across the very top.

I am wondering if it is some sort of memory issue because I have been using Pegasus Mail since 2004, not only for email but for my filing system by creating numerous folders and sub-folders. The size of my current PMAIL folder on my C drive is 17.8gB.

I am using the latest version of Pegasus (4.80.102smile with Windows 11 on a desk-top computer with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700, 2100 Mhz, 20 Core(s), 28 Logical processor and 16gB RAM.

Thanks for any help and/or advice, Chris

I've just realised there is a later version of Pegasus (4.91) that I am downloading and installing now.

I've just tried to install version 4.91, but get a setup error message saying a file was unable to be uploaded as I may have insufficient rights to copy the file, or if upgrading (that I am) a destination file may be read-only or in use (I closed Pegasus before attempting the upgrade).

Could this problem be anything to do with my original problem?

Thanks and regards, Chris

What's your install location (directory)? Sounds like being in some kind of protected system path, maybe Windows 11 now restricts a location that previous versions did not (or you manually granted access rights without remembering).

Also #1, a reboot of the PC immediately before attempting the upgrade will insure that no file is actually "in use".

Also #2, the description of the hang made me think that there was a popup you couldn't see that was waiting for a response.

Thanks Michael. I have Pegasus installed direct onto my C drive, where it has always been, and I assume the update will leave it on C Drive.

I have separated the messages regarding my installation of version 4.91 problem and made them into a new topic that I have just posted, because my original problem of Pegasus Mail being frozen appears to have got lost. I would be grateful for the opinion of members with more knowledge than me as to whether it could be a memory problem? I was thinking of trying to reduce the size of some of my larger folders to reduce the overall size of my PMAIL folder on my C drive that is 17.8gB.

We know that there is a 2GB size limit on folders but that appears only when trying to work with a folder that has reached that size. The new mail folder can be slow to open if there are a lot of unread messages and new mail filters because each one is processed through the filters as the folder is opened. Other known issues for slowness are:

  • The "Load Windows Internet Services" option is not set to "Always". This is in Tools > Options > General settings > Advanced settings
  • The default printer is not accessible to the system. Pegasus Mail polls it for font information. No response causes delays.

Rather than trying to reduce the size of some of the large folders, consider archiving some of your old data. By "archiving" I mean moving the mail to a different directory that can be attached as an added mailbox. Post back if you are not familiar with this process.

Thanks Brian, but the problem is not Pegasus (or the New Mail folder) being slow to open (they always open very quickly), but after using the program for a few minutes, the whole program suddenly 'freezes', in that clicking on anything other than the very tope horizontal window, doesn't do anything!

Are there any error sounds resulting from the clicks?

Can you identify a specific action that will result in the hang?

During the hang, can you click the Window pull-down menu and see the list of open windows? If so, does that list correspond with the open windows you can see?

Does the freeze happen in preview mode? And might using "classic" mode prevent it from occuring? It might be an idea to use my Minidump extension for taking a snapshot of the freeze/hang for further diagnostics: https://www.pmpgp.de/pmtools/MiniDumpAndSources.zip...

use my Minidump extension for taking a snapshot of the freeze/hang

Details in short: It's installation creates a Windows Start-menu group containing an item called PMDebug Snapshot: Launching it if Pegasus Mail appears to hang will gather some memory information about the current status and preceding this issue of Pegasus Mail to be sent to <beta-reports [at] pmail.gen.nz>. You will be guided through the required steps to take for doing so, if interested in more details please open the ReadMe file also linked to from the Start menu group.

Thanks Brian. To answer your three questions:

  1. No error sounds or messages are shown on the screen.

  2. Usually when clicking on a message in one of my three open windows I always have open (New mail, Junk or Suspicious Mail and one called Action, a folder I have created for emails I have to reply to or take some action with.) The only other two windows I always have open are my Address Book and my Folders window, that is my filing system containing folders and sub-folders for emails after I have finished with them but want to keep.

  3. So far this morning, Pegasus is working ok, but the next time it 'freezes' I will check that. When it does happen, the pull-down menus along the very top of the screen are the only things that still work. At the moment it is listing 5 with a tick against one of them called QRP that is a sub-folder of one of the folders in my Folders Window.

Because it is not open, I just clicked on it and this has caused Pegasus to freeze again, and this time I cannot even open the drop-down menus across the very top of the screen to see what windows are open as you suggest.

The name of the QRP sub-folder in the Folders window has a grey background to it, that I imagine is consistent with the tick shown against it in the Windows drop-down menu, but now I have noticed something else in the Folders window: two (next to each other) of the other 30 or so sub-folders in the same folder as QRP also have a grey background, but only for the right three-quarters of the line, meaning I can read the first five letters of the two sub-folder names but not the remaining letters. I have never noticed this before.

I have taken a screen-shot of this but cannot find how to include it in this post, a picture being worth a thousand words! Is there a way, please?

Hopefully this further information may help you, and others, suggest what is causing the problem.

Brian: further to my earlier email, I left Pegasus for a while to look at Michael's Minidump extension he suggested I try, and when I returned to Pegasus the 'freeze' had partly lifted because the top drop-down windows now work, although I am still unable to get anything else to work when I click on them. The Windows drop-down menu is now showing the same five folders as before, but this time the tick is against the 'Action' Window, probably because an email in that folder is highlighted. When I click on the Folders window, the highlight on the email in the Action window disappears and the grey background at the top of the Folders window, where the menu options are, has increased in intensity, but I still cannot highlight or open any of the folders or sub-folders in it. The Windows drop-down menu is now showing the same five folders, with the tick now against 'Folders Radio QRP'.

While I have been writing this, I have been flitting between it and Pegasus (I have two monitors on my desk-top computer) to check things as I write, and have just gone back to Pegasus only to find the whole program has now frozen again, not even the drop-down menus across the top will open! Part of the program must still be working though because while writing this paragraph, a new email has just appeared in the New Mail window, although it won't open when I click on it.

This inconsistency is driving me mad in that I am finding it very difficult to give you worthwhile information to help you work out what is going on.

After yet another cup of coffee, I am going back to Michael's suggestion and will report back here again.

@Flosex , a few weeks ago there was a discussion about Pegasus Mail hanging when attempting to send. It turned out to be a corrupted message in the queue that was causing Pegasus Mail to choke. Please rule that out by checking for any messages in the outgoing queue.

Well, me too, I really don't understand what's going on there: How about restarting Pegasus Mail, close all open windows, then close Pegasus Mail and start it again. Now just start with a single window you can work with and only open any other one if all works properly so you might figure out what exactly you can duplicate step by step?

I now assume you're not using the preview window? And for attaching screenshots take a look at this forum editor's edit window, there's an icon for uploading files:

Michael: Thanks for the info on posting a screenshot, but I don't see how that enables me to copy and paste an image into this post. The option you refer to appears to refer to a website URL?
