Pegasus 4.91 Spell Checker

I have recently upgraded from version 4.8 to 4.91 and cannot find the 'Enable Real-Time Highlighting' option to enable me to check spelling as I compose a message. I understand it underlines errors in red.

I have checked DICTS to make sure I have en_GB.v5dict installed, and ADMIN for the USRDICT5.PMD file, that shows it is being updated as I add words after the SEND button causes the spell checker to check the message.

Thanks for any help and/or suggestions, Chris

Autoreplacement is the closest you can get to spell checking as you type. That setting and its word list is located in Tools > Options > User interface > Automatic formatting. The word list is stored in a file named AUTORPLC.PM

The USRDICT5.PMD file is only used by the spell checker which is different from autoreplacement.

Thanks Brian. Before I posted my question, I had asked Google AI how to set it up, and the following is what it told me. I assume from what you have said, that that is wrong information? (This won't be the first time AI has given me wrong information!) Setting up "spell check as you type" (often called "on-the-fly" or "real-time" spell checking) in Pegasus Mail 4.9 is a bit different from modern web-based email because Pegasus uses an internal editor and the Hunspell engine.

Here is how to enable and configure it:

  1. Enable Real-Time HighlightingBy default, Pegasus Mail may be set to only check spelling when you manually click the button or send the message. To see red underlines while you type:

Open Pegasus Mail and go to Tools > Options.

In the left-hand list, look for the Outgoing mail category and select Message editor.

Look for a checkbox labeled "Enable 'Live' spell-checking (underline errors as you type)" or similar.

Note: If this option is greyed out, it usually means no dictionary is currently selected.

Click OK to save.

  1. Select Your DictionaryIf the underlines aren't appearing, you need to ensure a dictionary is active:

Open a New Message window.

Click the Spell Check button (the ABC icon) in the toolbar.

In the spell check dialog that pops up, look for a Settings or Dictionaries tab.

Ensure your preferred language (e.g., US English or UK English) is selected in the list.

Click Close or OK.

Interesting Google AI got the part right about how to select the preferred language dictionary but did not make any reference to the other options there (Settings, secondary dictionary).

I don't have a clue where it came up with the reference to "red underlines" and " a checkbox labeled "Enable 'Live' spell-checking". There needs to me a heavy skepticism about AI. I wonder how that is going to be taught to our young people.

I use AI quite a lot, especially for one of my main hobbies, and have found several instances (like this one) where it is just plainly wrong. It is ok if you use AI, accepting it can be wrong, but like Brian says, I also wonder how that is going to be taught to our young people. Thanks again for your help on this subject, Brian, it is very satisfying to know there are people like you on this Group very willing to help us less knowledgeable Pegasus users.
