Mounting old MAIL folder

Hi, During the years I had to start Pmail from scratch and I have couple of Mail folders, full of old filing trays and folders that I would like to open, and perhaps to incorporate into my v 4.91 version. Is there an easy way to "link" or "mount" them to my Pmail? Very gratefully yours. Gianmaria Fontana di Sacculmino, gfds@fontanafam.org

The easiest way to do what is called "Add mailbox to list". I your case this would mean adding the directory where you old mail data exists to your current Folders list. The directory would appear as an additional mailbox at the bottom of your Folders list. You then have the option of leaving it like that, or you can copy data from it to your "My mailbox". If you do this, you must work at the message level, you can not copy folders at the folder level. This means that you would need to create a folder in "My mailbox" and then copy messages to it from the attached mailbox. Keep in mind that a Tray structure in Pegasus Mail is virtual, maintained in the HIERARCH.PM file. I do not believe the attached directory will use an old HEIRARCH.PM so be prepared for Tray structure to be lost.

The process for adding a mailbox to you Folders list is as follows:

  • Open your Folders window
  • With the Folders window having focus, click the Folders pull-down menu then select "Add mailbox to list..."
  • Enable the Directory path radio button if needed (I believe it is the default)
  • Enter the path of the directory you want to add
  • Enter a name for the mailbox
  • Click OK

Example:

Thank you very much Brian, the task is very easy, the worst part is that I have about 750 FOLxxx.PMM; is going to be a nice job for the full weekend smile

I am glad the attachment of the old mail went well.
I also rely on a significant Tray folder structure. Many years ago I lost it due to a corrupted HIERARCH.PM file and was unable to restore it due to a bad backup. From then on I started prefixing my folder names with a reference to their parent tray. This way, if I ever lost Tray structure again, the prefixes would produce a folder sort order that would make it easy to rebuild the Tray structure. It wasn't a perfect answer since I knew I would likely need to open a number of messages to determine what some of the parent Tray names might have been. It also addressed the concern of duplicate folder names. I worked in accounting so had Tray names associated with customers and vendors, with folders in each that served the same purpose. The prefix allowed me to use the same remaining folder name (eg: Ven1_Bills, Ven1_Correspondence, Ven1_Purchases, Cus1_Invoices, Cus1_Correspondence).
Something to think about. smile
