EMAIL RECEIVED MISSING?

I have been a Pegasus using since the 1990's, using version 4.8 on windows 11 computer. This morning my email received folder was missing. I did find 3 copies of it on the mail folder page under some weird script. I deleted 2 of those odd names there, and it eliminated the entire 3rd folder. How do I find the folder in which email received is stored again? I looked at every .pmm file, and I have 5, but still no luck. Is my entire email received file gone, or hidden somewhere? I do have a file save software but I dnt know what file to pick to restore from yesterday? File New and Copies to self are working perfectly.

There is no received email folder with normal setup.
The new mail folder is actually all the CNM files in the mail folder.

You might have filter rules that move CNM mails into mail folders on open.
Many of my incoming emails are moved to the assigned folders.

The folders are pairs of PMM and PMI file (PMM is mail folder, and PMI are the index files for the matching PMM file). New Mail messages are CNM files.

Mike and others..I guess I was not clear. The folder that is missing is when you read a New Mail, and then exit, it goes to what I labeled an email received folder. My new mail folder and copies to self folders are intact, it is email I have read before and then goes to a folder is missing. So it appears I need to find a matching .pmm and .pmi file from yesterday? Do I rename or other .pmm and .pmi files to make those become invisible? I assume you can only have one pair of active .pmm and .pmi files at any one time?

I don't know how your file save software works but if it has captured the contents of your mailbox directory at some point before you did the deletes the make a safety copy of that content to preserve it from being overwritten. You should now be able to do a comparison of the .PMM files in your current mailbox directory to those in the copy of the saved files. Hopefully that will identify any .PMM files in saved that are no longer in your mailbox directory. Report back on what you find.

At this point I don't suggest trying to copy any files from saved back to the mailbox because:

 1. A folder is made up of two files with the same filename but with .PMM and .PMI extensions so both would need to be copied.
 2. The fact that you saw three in the folder list is abnormal and needs further consideration. Your findings of the .PMM file comparison may help with that.

Thx Brian. I apologize if I am not clear. I own a construction company, but I am not a software expert. The only issue I am having is read emails that go to my email received folder, are all missing. My copy to self and new mail are fine. There were 10 years of old emails saved. When I look at my Pmail/Admin on my hard drive I see 3 files called Fol.......pmm and 5 called Fol.....pmi. How do I choose which of these to use? How does Pegasus choose which of these to use? I know how rename them to .old, so maybe I choose any MATCHING pair of .pmm and .pmi and rename the others to .old? But does Pegusus automatically find these? How does Pegasus chose these? Its confusing. I also use a backup software that has these files.

Here is an explanation of how things work:
Each folder that you see in the Folder list is made up of two files, a .PMM file which contains the actual email content, and a .PMI file that contains an index to the data in the .PMM file. Both have the same filename (eg: FOL12345.PMM and FOL12345.PMI). These files contain what is called an internal folder ID. That internal folder ID is associated with the the folder names you see in the Folder through a file named HIERARCH.PM. It is this association that allows Pegasus Mail to know which .PMM/.PMI file pair to access when you open the folder named "email received".

I also use a backup software that has these files.

If this means that the backup of your mailbox directory also contains 5 .PMI and 3 .PMM files then two mail data files are missing. This means that the data from two folders is gone. I can only conjecture about how it happened so will asks some folks who have more insight into the inner workings of Pegasus Mail. In the meantime, with Pegasus Mail closed, use a file explorer to navigate to your mailbox directory and make a copy the HIERARCH.PM file then save it to a temporary location (I use C:\TEMP for this sort of thing). Open the copy with a text editor like Notepad then copy the entire content and paste it into a reply. This might provide a clue about what might have happened. The content will contain folder names. You can obfuscate any that you don't want publicly displayed by replacing each character with an "x". Just please only obfuscate the folder name part of an entry.

Thx Brian....What I did is when back a few days on my saved filed files (Carbonite) and transfered that older heirarcy file to my Mail folder, and labeled the existing one Old. I then picked a larger matching pair file of .pmm and .pmi, and labeled all the others .old.

No luck. Pegusus works fine, new mail is good, and copies to self good. But 10 years of saved emails read and put in a folder are missing. Is there any way we can facetime so you can walk me through this? Im retired so I have plenty of free time now. Or anyone.....I suspect my old emails that were saved are there, but Pegasus can't find them.

No luck.

This is not surprising considering it may have been looking for the two .PMM files that appear to be missing. I suggest you compare the .PMM and .PMI files in the Carbonite backup with those in the Mail folder that you labeled Old. If you find the two missing .PMM files (the ones whose filenames match the orphaned .PMI files) then restoring both pairs of files from the backup should be the first step. You might also compare the content of Carbonite and the Old HIERARCH.PM files to see what differences exist.

Be sure to keep Pegasus Mail closed when working in it files with a file explorer. Making safety copies before doing any changes is prudent, which it sounds like you are doing (eg: avoid overwriting a file without copying it first, or rename it to preserve the original).

And yes, I do see 5 .pmi files in recycle bin.....

This is weird. I don't believe this is something Pegasus Mail did. I wondered if perhaps during a folder reindex it deleted the existing .PMI file and created a new one but I just did a folder reindex and do not have a .PMI file in my recycle bin so that isn't it.

Do you have Carbonite backups scheduled for only when Pegasus Mail is closed?

Just to be clear. The mail from folders are stored in the PMM and PMI files, so they contain the emails and indexs to the folders in matching PMM files.

If you rename them to PMM.old and PMI.old Pegasus will not see any of the data.
Downloading new mail will not redown them, since it is likely emails have been removed from your ISP or providers mail servers.

The PMM can be LOOKED at with the type command, but should note be edited with programs other than Pegasus or some programs the support mbox formatted files. Not simple text files, but one could see the contents with a type command.

Example on an simple test setup typing the main folder with its default original entry shows this:
note I use linux, so using cat instead of type to view it directly without wine running.
note 2: The first 128 bytes has folder info, and the folder long name that are both null padded fields, but nulls show as nothing. So Main upto From: is 128 characters in length.

Content-description: Mail message body

This folder is created automatically the first time you run Pegasus
Mail: it is a general-purpose folder you can use for anything, but it also
has another attribute that you might find useful.

You can configure Pegasus Mail so that any mail left in your new mail
folder that you have read but not moved or deleted is automatically
moved into this folder when the new mail folder is closed. To turn this
feature on, move the mouse to the 'Tools' menu and click it: from the
menu select 'Options' to open the Pegasus Mail options dialog. Select
the 'Basic settings' page in the list of available settings pages.

The name of this folder, 'Main folder' should appear in the field called
'Name for default mail folder' - if it doesn't, type it in. Then make sure
that the check box called '
Allow read messages to stay in the new
mail folder' is unchecked.

Now, all mail that you read and leave in the new mail folder will be
moved here when you close the new mail folder.

So, would do a check to see what the PMM files in your directory show at beginning.
Should show you the names of each folder to match with the PMM files.

On my system, I rename the folders so my user HIERACH.PM has these lines that show matching names with the PMM and PMI files.

Have had a PMI sometime get corrupted, but deleting the PMI file is ok with Pegasus closed, and it will be recreated, but will loose some info on read/unread messages, and some deleted messages can reappear if space hasn't been recovered.

Example on an simple test setup typing the main folder with its default original entry shows this: note I use linux, so using cat instead of type to view it directly without wine running. note 2: The first 128 bytes has folder info, and the folder long name that are both null padded fields, but nulls show as nothing. So Main upto From: is 128 characters in length. ```` cat MAIN.PMM Main Folder0JOJHB32:3A3A:MAINFrom: Pegasus Mail Technical Support <support@pmail.gen.nz> To: New Pegasus Mail User <Admin> Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 12:54:20 +1200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: About this folder Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body This folder is created automatically the first time you run Pegasus Mail: it is a general-purpose folder you can use for anything, but it also has another attribute that you might find useful. You can configure Pegasus Mail so that any mail left in your new mail folder that you have read but not moved or deleted is automatically moved into this folder when the new mail folder is closed. To turn this feature on, move the mouse to the 'Tools' menu and click it: from the menu select 'Options' to open the Pegasus Mail options dialog. Select the 'Basic settings' page in the list of available settings pages. The name of this folder, 'Main folder' should appear in the field called 'Name for default mail folder' - if it doesn't, type it in. Then make sure that the check box called 'Allow read messages to stay in the new mail folder' is unchecked. Now, all mail that you read and leave in the new mail folder will be moved here when you close the new mail folder. ```` So, would do a check to see what the PMM files in your directory show at beginning. Should show you the names of each folder to match with the PMM files. On my system, I rename the folders so my user HIERACH.PM has these lines that show matching names with the PMM and PMI files. ```` # ls *.PMM 1440.PMM COPY1314.PMM COPY2012.PMM DAD2.PMM G4L0408.PMM HARLEY.PMM MAIN2005.PMM PMAIL2023.PMM USPS2019.PMM ACCOUNT.PMM COPY2000.PMM COPY2015.PMM DAD.PMM G4L0909.PMM HERC-XENA.PMM MAIN2006.PMM PMAIL2024.PMM USPS2020.PMM AFT.PMM COPY2001.PMM COPY2016.PMM DHARRIS.PMM G4L1011.PMM IBM.PMM MAIN2007.PMM PMAIL.PMM USPS2021.PMM ALUMNI.PMM COPY2002.PMM COPY2017.PMM DISNEY.PMM G4L1213.PMM JAY.PMM MAIN2008.PMM PM-NEWS.PMM USPS2022.PMM AMAZON.PMM COPY2003.PMM COPY2018.PMM DONNA_SUMMERS.PMM G4L1418.PMM JUNK.PMM MAIN.PMM REDHAT.PMM USPS.PMM AMZOLD.PMM COPY2004.PMM COPY2019.PMM EBAYOLD2.PMM G4L1920.PMM KERNEL.PMM MERCURY.PMM SALIVE.PMM WATT.PMM ANALOGX.PMM COPY2005.PMM COPY2020.PMM EBAYOLD.PMM G4L2122.PMM KEVIN.PMM MOM-ORG.PMM SPAMH.PMM WEBCAL.PMM BACKUP.PMM COPY2006.PMM COPY2021.PMM EBAY.PMM G4L2324.PMM KUENTOS.PMM MOM.PMM SPAM.PMM WGET2.PMM BILL521.PMM COPY2007.PMM COPY2022.PMM ELAINE1.PMM G4L.PMM LIBRE.PMM OPENCOB.PMM SQUID.PMM ZHAOPEI.PMM BLOODBANK.PMM COPY2008.PMM COPYSELF.PMM ELAINE2.PMM G4U.PMM LINUX.PMM OXFORD.PMM SYSLINUX.PMM BOYCOTT.PMM COPY2009.PMM C.PMM ELAINE3.PMM GFT.PMM LYNDAE.PMM PMAIL2020.PMM TIGHTVNC.PMM BRAIN.PMM COPY2010.PMM CUSTCARE.PMM ELAINE.PMM GRC.PMM MAIN2003.PMM PMAIL2021.PMM TISHAWNNA.PMM COLLECTZ.PMM COPY2011.PMM DAD1.PMM FEDORA.PMM GRUB.PMM MAIN2004.PMM PMAIL2022.PMM USPS2018.PMM ```` HEIRACH.PM file ```` # cat HIERARCH.PM 2,1,"024B349:My mailbox","Michael Setzer II","Michael Setzer II" I just found this in a Carbonite knowledgebase article titled "Scheduling Your Backup for Carbonite Safe":

"By default, the Online Backup will run on a continuous basis after your initial backup completes. When a file is created or changed, it will be backed up within 10 minutes. If a backed up file is changed more than once in a 24 hour period, the most recent change will be backed up within 24 hours."

I assume that your "email received" folder would have been receiving mail regularly throughout the day which would mean its files fall into the "more than once in a 24 hour period" category meaning it gets backup up sometime with 24 hours. This is concerning because there seems to be the potential for Carbonite to be attempting to back up those folder files at the same time when Pegasus Mail is trying to write a new message to the folder. This same concern holds true for the Pegasus Mail files that maintain the status of Pegasus Mail since they are being written to routinely an one of those writes could bump heads with Carbonite doing a backup. What do you know about how Carbonite works? Am I way off base?

BTW, Windows 11 has a feature called "File history". I don't know anything more about it than that it exists but it might be worth some research to see if it might be of any value for restoring mail files.

I'm like a kid trying to find Gold. What I did, I went to Mail/Admin and I chose the largest out of 5 (fol.......pmm) files and made the other 4 .pmm files not get recognize but changing their name to old. I did the same with all (FOL....pmi) files, and only kept the matching .pmi and .pmm working. I then started Pegusus, went to Mail Folders, chose my email received folder, which was empty, and chose reindex. As a result about 400 of the 3,000 emails I was looking for reappeared! But where are the other 2600?

When a read email is saved, are they the only files that get a (fol......pmm) name and matching ...(fol....pmi) name? How do I choose the correct pair that has all my old emails? The largest file?

I will gladly pay someone via Venmo if they want to help me....

Brian,

Remember, I can answer any question about construction or real estate, or flying, but not software. I have been using Carbonite for over ten years and never had this problem. So I doubt that is an issue? I am really lost trying which combo .pmm and .pmi I am suppose to use? There are so many combos?

As I said before.
It you use type on each PMM file
Example:
type main.pmm | more
The first line will contain the text name for the folder, and then the key used in HIERARCH.PM.

That should let you identify each of the PMM/PMI pairs to let you know what the name is:

Wondering if perhaps you backup was done while Pegasus was open, and might have backed up the PMM file at one point, and the PMI file at a different point.

I never backup Pegasus while it is open.

Script I use to backup my setup.

#!/usr/bin/bash
if [ "$EUID" -ne 0 ] ; then
echo -e 'Need to be root user';exit 1
fi
cd .wine/drive_c || exit
7zz a /home/msetzerii/pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z PMAIL/*
cd /home/msetzerii/ || exit
chown msetzerii:msetzerii pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z
7zz t pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z
cp -v pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z /data
ncftpput -u msetzerii -p ************** 192.168.1.28 . pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z
ncftpput -u msetzerii -p ************** 192.168.1.8 . pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z

Created a 7z archive of PMAIL directory in my home directory.
Copy the backup to a directory on a 2nd drive in machine
Copy archive to two other machines

Generally keep a few generations of backups, before removing old ones.
Currently have 3 in /data

You could try to reindex folders.
Right-click on each folder, and select the option to reindex.
That might restore missing records.
Did once have a corrupted PMI file that would not reindex, but renaming the bad PMI file, and then opening Pegasus did allow it to create a new PMI file that did work fine.

I don't know how to help at this point. Are you unable to look on Carbonite at a point prior to the problem to see what .PMM/.PMI file pairs are available to restore and then compare that list with what is in the mailbox directory now?

My inclination is to have you rename the current \Mail directory and then restore the \Mail directory from a Carbonite backup BUT as I understand Carbonite, it does not take a point in time snapshot so I don't know whether those .PMI files will be in synch with their .PMM counterpart, or whether the status files like HIERARCH.PM and STATE.PMJ will be in synch with the folder files in that particular backup set. I guess you don't have anything to lose if you try it. If it doesn't work, you can remove the restored \Mail directory and rename the old one back to \Mail to return to the status before attempting the restore.

There is no way to tell, especially considering the deletion of two folders that you mentioned in your initial post.

Sorting the mailbox files by filename will list all FOL?????.PMM and .PMI files sequentially which should make a comparison to what is on Carbonite possible without too much effort, that is if Carbonite can be sorted the same way.

I can't follow this? The PMM/PMI files have the exact same names to be in pairs??
Since I have a program that renames my folders, it is very clear which pairs there are.
With the default setup, most folders are created for FOL0619E (That is my deleted Mail Folder folder.
Normally would be deleted, but had a spam message that caused pegasus to crash, so it didn't get deleted. But shows the example. I'll delete it afterwards, and it will be recreated with a different name
So just do a dir .PMM .PMI under windows would give similar information.

I appreciate your help, but this is getting way pass my capability. If I took you flying and said, ok, you land the plane, what would you do? That's how I feel.

As I said, I think facetime could solve this. I am willing to pay for consultation to get my missing files back.

If it was a Cessna 152, I might still be able to get it on the ground in one piece. smile Never got my license but had solo time.

I don't know about that. It would still be sitting at the PC so if you aren't comfortable working in multiple windows to do directory file comparisons then a lot of time would be spent on that. Complicating things is that I don't have confidence that Carbonite will allow for restoration of the \Mail directory to a specific point in the past. This could mean that the recovery attempt could require a lot of trial and error.

I think this has become a file recovery endeavor. I have tried to help with identifying the files that should be recovered but am not willing to get involved the recovery process itself. To me it falls into the realm of PC support, which I despise doing.

What are you doing in regards to messages after retrieval from your email host? If you aren't deleting messages on the server then your messages should be there. Accessing them with an IMAP connection might be a option.
