Can't access Pmail help

Suddenly I can't pull up Pmail help. A window opens (behind the main Pegasus icon on the taskbar) but it's blank. Not sure how long ago this happened but was trolling through the help index to see if I could find why I couldn't add a gmail address fairly recently (Pmail Community solved that one!).

No major changes in my Win 10 system that I know of. Suggestions welcome.

With Pegasus Closed.
Find your STATE.PMJ file
edit with a text editor
Find line that starts with something like this.
PMHELP5=0,0,0,0,"196 135 850 601 272"

Generally, the info in the "'s is corrupted, usually a negative number.
Options.
Change line to
PMHELP5=0,0,0,0

or delete line completely.
Save file.
Then open Pegasus and see if Help works.

Hooray! And very easy following your instructions, once I figured out which of the Pmail folders PMHELP... was in. I deleted back to PMHELP5=0,0,0,0, opened Pmail with Windows Notepad, hit "index and voila!"

FYI, this was the line in the PMHELP... file:

PMHELP5=0,0,0,0,"-32000 -32000 314 50 350"

Thanks for your prompt reply, apologies for not getting back to you more quickly.

Yes generally, it is a negative number in the string.
Not clear exactly how it gets there.
If you go back now, it should have different values.

As mentioned it is in the STATE.PMJ File. Not a folder file PMM and PMI files.

Glad it worked out. Perhaps an update could check for those negative numbers, and automatically fix it. But happens very seldom.

A cause of this Help window issue is the closing of Pegasus Mail while the Help window is minimized. My sense is that Pegasus Mail records the Help window position as minimized and behind the taskbar. The next time Help is invoked it will open as a minimized window behind the taskbar. This would explain why this convoluted process will reveal it in Win11:

  • Hover over the "Pegasus Mail Help System" entry in the Taskbar.
  • Right-click in the window preview that appears (hopefully you don't have this disabled in Win11), select the "Move" option.
  • Move your cursor away from the taskbar and notice that it has turned into a cross with arrows on all ends.
  • Tap one of your keyboard arrow keys and notice your cursor return to normal.
  • On movement you will see that you are dragging a minimized Help system window.
  • Left-click to drop the minimized window.
  • Grabs its corners to stretch it to the desired size, then move it to the desired position.

As I've used Pmail at least since 2006, I seldom use help and it's very unlikely that I closed Pmail with the help window minimized. The only reason I was trying to use the help file was the problem with Gmail, which I eventually solved by discovering that the only way to set up a Gmail account with the required OAUTH is to use the Wizard from the Internet Options General tab.

I'm running Win 10, not 11. I was getting a blank window (on the taskbar, behind the main Pmail icon), not a minimized window. Fortunately, I was able to edit the PMHELP5 file and correct the problem.

In looking at my STATE.PMJ found some lines with negative values.

$ grep -E "\-[0-9]" <STATE.PMJ | grep -v V4FP
wpmLOG=-4,-31,1540,740
V4QA=182,-21,1272,649,"1"
EDMAIL_M=-4,-31,1540,740
QueueC:\PMAIL\MAIL=-4,-31,1540,740
DraftC:\PMAIL\MAIL=-4,-31,1540,740
Type1=687,-1,2231,770,"80,206,188,0"

My Help line is valid, so it has no negative.
Seems a few have the common -4,-31??
