Safe to reinstall 4.81 after upgrading to 4.9?

I installed Pegasus for Windows 4.9 yesterday and I would like to go back to 4.81.


I spend my days copying and pasting content from emails to publish online, and now I get a lot of weird formatting and characters when I paste to a text document; it's made my work take twice as long.


Things were better for me in 4.81, but I didn't know if it's okay to just download 4.81 and install it over 4.9.


Don't want to lose any of my old content, some of which is 30 years old.

Couple thing. Know that if you have a working setup, you can install a previous version, and it would work, but if something is not right, the downgrade would probable fail since it uses the data. If the PMAIL.CFG file doesn't match with way the PMAIL\MAIL Directory is setup, it would be best to make a full back first.


What version of Windows are you using?
Is it installed in C:\PMAIL\ directory?
What does the type C:\PMAIL\Programs\PMAIL.CFG show
Note: Note a text file so don't try to open in notepad, word, or other editors.
What does dir C:\PMAIL\MAIL shows.
if it just shows PMAIL.USR and ADMIN subdirectory it is mult setup.
if it has lots of files it is single user setup.


Are you using IE Renderer? Is it updated with latest version.


Hopefully, others might have more ideals, but copy to another location before trying anything, are compress whole directory into a zip or other backup file.

The simple answer is "Yes" (make a full backup first). I don't think it will solve your problem though because 4.91 is mostly the official release of what was the 4.81 beta. When pasting have you tried right-click > paste as plain text?


Know that, IERenderer is an add-on product that is packaged with Pegasus Mail. It is heavily involved in the rendering of, and handling of formatted content in emails. As an add-on, it is maintained by a different developer who updates it much more frequently than Pegasus Mail. I wonder if your 4.81 was using a different IERenderer version. I believe the version packaged with 4.91 is not the most current one so consider updating it if you haven't. You might also try using the other two renderer options to see if they produce better results for your workflow. To switch renderers, click the IERenderer icon in the main Pegasus Mail toolbar then select the "Selected renderer" item. The three renderers are selectable there.

What text editor are you using? If any of the office packages is involved they usually provide options for pasting text in various formats if you don't prefer plain text, typically via context menu (right-click). In Libre Office you may select rich text or HTML for getting better results.

Continue on first windows, and change to C:\PMAIL\MAIL
Then save and exit.
Then open Pegasus and it should find folders.


For Backups I use 7z to make an backup, but any compression should work.
On my machine I use
7zz a /home/msetzerii/pmsave-"$(date +%F)".7z PMAIL/*
That is on linux under wine, but backs up whole PMAIL directory to name with date.

I have installed the newest IERenderer and it's different, but so far, it seems to have solved my reported issues.


Edit: Until now, when it has started crashing on some copy/paste actions and when I can paste, some formatting is not retained (as it was before).
