Draft message copying...

Long time user. I have 2 Stationery forms and 149 Draft messages going back to 2007. When I try to Copy them to a regular file folder, only 28 of them are copied. I am unable to determine why some are copied and some are not. Has anyone else had this issue, and what might be the workaround? Thanks in advance.

Can you send some screen shots of what you are seeing?
Don't have any draft mesages on my setup.
Did a test and created one. Seems it creates two files.

Don't know if those are all the extensions? but those were what I found in mail directory.
What of these extensions do you have? How many. How are you copying them?

Every Draft message saved results in one .pmo and one .pnx file. When I click the Open Saved Draft button I am presented with the list of 150 drafts. The options on that window are Open, Send now, Copy, and Delete. The blurb when I hover over Copy says, "Copy the selected items to a mail folder as mail messages". I tried selecting all the messages and hit Copy and it started filling up the folder I designated, but it stopped after 28 copies. It won't copy any of the other files, either singly or any other way. I started clean and tried copying single files that failed, and they still failed. It's not a critical thing. I'm just trying to reduce the folder on my hard drive by 300 files that have to be scanned every time I do a backup.

@MikeSoja, if you are comfortable working with a file explorer, use one to navigate to your mailbox directory then do a search of it for each of these file extensions. Do this with Pegasus Mail closed. For now, just do an individual search for each extension and report back on the file count for each.
.PMO
.PMX
.PMW
.ASV

If you don't know the location of your mailbox directory you can find its path as follows:
While in Pegasus Mail, go to Help, About Pegasus Mail, then click the Info button
In the resulting display find the entry "Home mailbox location:...".

That said, can you open and view any of the ones that will not copy? If not, they are likely corrupted so are worthless to save by making a copy.

Finally, since you goal is file reduction, while searching the mailbox directory you can also do searches for these extensions and delete any that you find. These are temporary files that can be left behind. They are safe to delete.

Yep. I've been through the mailbox directory with a fine tooth comb. I found 16 .PNX files without their corresponding .PMO files (all from 2001 - 2002) and deleted them. None of the remaining 150 saved Draft messages appear to be corrupt or unreadable. I successfully opened and re-saved some of the drafts that wouldn't Copy and they still wouldn't Copy. At this point, I could just ZIP together the 150 Drafts, delete the individual entries, and if I never need them, unZIP them again into the mailbox. I was just hoping to find a way to put them into their own folder within Pegasus where they would look like a single file in the Windows file system.

This is very strange. Draft/Saved messages should exist in the mailbox directory as individual files with one of the extensions I previously listed. In your one of you posts you mentioned clicking the "Open Saved Draft" button. I am not aware of such a button. I only know of File > Open saved messages. Does it produce the same list? If not, please describe or include a screen shot of what you are referring to as the "Open Saved Draft" button.

File > Open saved messages does the same thing as the button on the toolbar.6a5135317d38b

I found that button in the "Business user" toolbar, but in a different position. I have never used that toolbar. The different position along with some other buttons that I don't see in any of the available toolbars indicates that you have customized your toolbar with TOOLBAR.PM. Cool, and nicely done. Unfortunately it doesn't help figure out what is going on with your draft messages list.

Please go into Help > About Pegasus Mail > Info button and see if the path to the home mailbox location and the new mailbox location are the same. If they aren't, have you checked for draft message files in both directories.

If they are the same, I am out of ideas but am happy to ask the developer David Harris for his thoughts in the hopes of finding an answer. Before doing so, please confirm that Pegasus Mail has been restarted since you first noticed the large number of draft messages.

LOL, yes, I customized TOOLBAR.PM so long ago that I wasn't sure, after moving Pegasus from computer to computer to computer and reinstalling after some serious crashes in the last couple of years, that the settings were still in effect.

No, the home mailbox location and the new mailbox location are not the same, but that's probably because I've always used a non-default location for the individual files, and when I have to install Pegasus on a new machine, I run the installation to establish the base and register the program, copy my backup files into their new home location, then edit PMAIL.INI in three places to point to my home mailbox location.

Right now, the new mailbox location points to the PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN, but the only files in that folder that are used by Pegasus are PMAIL.INI and IERenderer.ini.

And yeah, I've restarted Pegasus numerous times today. I've worked my way down the list of Draft messages, and some files will Copy and most still won't, and I have ruled out differences in Copy-to settings, etc, messages with attachments, signature differences (I thought maybe it's signatures that don't exist anymore), and all the other settings in the tabs on individual messages, and I can't find a determining factor. It doesn't seem to like messages addressed to two addresses, but in other cases it doesn't like single addresses to a particular person. Age of the messages don't make a difference. I thought maybe a format changed somewhere, but some of the older messages have copied. The vast majority won't though.

Thanks for your time on this. Like I said earlier, it's not a particularly critical issue, but it's the kind of puzzle that I keep mulling over and wondering about.

It is now for me too. I will ask up the chain for ideas that I have not thought of.

The only other files that should be in there are the new message files, one .CNM file for each message in the New mail folder. Are there any others?

Good morning! My ADMIN folder contents are probably a result of the way I install Pegasus. The first run (which is more or less required) puts the core Settings/Layout files into ADMIN. I suppose that most people then point Pegasus to a mailbox from inside the program, but for some reason my routine is to exit Pegasus after the initial run, and then edit the PMAIL.INI file to point to my mailbox, which I have already filled with my saved versions of HIERARCH.PM, STATE.PMJ, and the rest of them. The default config files are left in ADMIN, unused. And NEW MAIL, the .CNM files do go into the ADMIN folder, too, though all of them are immediately automatically filtered to other folders. I've been doing it this way for so long that I forget some of the rationales behind it, but I'll play around with it, today. Everything works except for the COPY Drafts function, which I've never tried to use in however many decades I've been using Pegasus.

I'm thinking that it may be possible for me to go into OFFLINE mode, and SEND all the drafts, which might dump them into my Copy-to-Self folder, whereupon I can then move them into their own folder. One of them I tried yesterday did NOT end up in the Queue to be uploaded, and I want to make sure that none of these Drafts go out, but it may be a workaround.

Surprising? I expected it would be queued. Was a copyself made? Did that message get removed from the Draft Manager list?

These draft messages should be .PMO files. The question is: Where are they?
Maybe a search of your entire file system would be worthwhile.
I'm also thinking that I would sort the file list of both \Admin and the home mailbox directory by date and look for a file that matches the date/time of the oldest message in the Draft Manager.

I expected the Draft message to be queued, also, and yes, the copyself was made, and the message was removed from the Drafts.

Yes, I have 151 .PMO files and every one has a corresponding .PNX file, for a total of 302 Draft related files. I did find 16 or so orphan .PNX files with no matching .PMOs and deleted them. According to one website, "PNX files are the RTF version of the message bodies of any queued and draft messages that contain formatted text." All the Draft message files are in my Working home mailbox location with all my other folders and files. It's about 750 files altogether, with Draft messages taking up a little less than half. The dates on the .PMO and .PNX Draft files listed by File explorer in the folder I use for my mailbox match the dates listed in the Pegasus Draft Manager window. I only have one set of Pegasus email files on my current computer. It's a brand new computer that I just set up recently.

I haven't tried Sending things, yet, as I need to take some steps to ensure I can get back to where I started if things go sideways.

I have heard back from the developer who does not know why the copy function might be failing. He admitted that this isn't an area of the code that he has been attentive to so will look at it to see if he can identify what is causing the copy failures. I will certainly post anything additional that I learn.
