It's now working as I expected.

At the time of testing I already had a long standing address book entry for "Her" but no user named "Her".

After creating the user "Her" I then ran the tests sending mails to "Her" and "PM:Her" before opening and closing Pmail and ran into the previously described problem. Since then I have closed and opened Pmail and the same tests work OK.

I guess that Pmail needed to be closed to force something to be written to disc so that the function would work.

I have a non-networked computer set up for multi-user so that my wife and I 
have separate mailboxes but, of course, only one user can be active at a time.

Let's say the user names are "Him" and "Her" so I can send emails to "Her" as 
a local user. However if I have an entry in an address book with the Name(alias) 
of "Her" then emails which I send with a To: address of "Her" get sent to the 
true address of "Her" in the address book via SMTP. That is regardless of the 
To: entry being typed in directly or being picked from the User Lookup list 
presented after pressing F2.

According to the manual, the Address overrides section, on page 42, states 
that prefixing "Her" with PM: in the To: field forces Pmail to treat the 
address as being local, but that made no difference when I tried it.

Is this function broken or have I misunderstood how it should work?

I believe that you do misunderstand.  I believe that PE: makes the system think that this is not SMTP mail and thus does not get sent to the SMTP mail queue but it does not override the fact that it is an addressbook entry that will override the local user of the same name.

I can understand that an addressbook entry will override a local user of the same name  but what I found was that, when prefixing "Her" with "PM:"in the To: box, the message was sent by SMTP. I can be sure of that because the email address in the address book was invalid so the message was bounced.

Yes missed my point.  I believe that the addressbook entry for "Her" is will override this all the time.  If there is a PE: it should should only override the SMTP setup or built in LAN mailer when used.
