I have Mercury 4.5 installed on my computer and I have protocols S, P and E active. My host name is Tyan. I have a local domain called Tyan.me and a user mark. I am able to send myself an email successfully with username mark, password xyz, Incoming mail server 192.168.1.16 and outgoing server 192.168.1.16. I am also able to receive this mail. So, Mercury appears to be installed and configured properly – at least for this simple task. The Mercury log file shows the following for the SMTP transaction:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Connection from 192.168.1.16, Thu Mar 20 11:08:02 2008
EHLO TYAN

RCPT TO: <mark@Tyan.me>

I have an application installed on this box which emails a message to a specified address when a remote device senses motion. I know this application is setup and working because when configured to mail to my regular internet email address using my ISP’s incoming and outgoing, it works. But the process is too slow for my needs so I configured it to use the exact settings that worked for my email test above. (I have no access to view or modify the application’s source code.)
When I run the application it clearly is sending to my Mercury SMTP server but there is an error. The Mercury log shows this:
Connection from 192.168.1.16, Thu Mar 20 12:05:01 2008
EHLO localhost
auth login
QUIT
1 sec. elapsed, connection closed Mar 20 12:05:02 2008
The error in the session log is
501 Authentication failed - bad user or password.
I don’t know what this “localhost’ is about or where it’s coming from because my application is clearly set to the exact user, password, servers, etc. that my successful email test used.
How can I configure my Mercury server to accept mail from this application?
Anyone who can help me would surely be considered a scholar and a friend.
