Invalid or illegal from address

We are there although I still do not understand why this problem just surfaced after several years.

Mercury had the path to the Mailbox folder via a share in the form of \\ComputerName\MAILBOX\~8

I changed this to J:\MAILBOX\~8 and all was well.

Thanks

Ken

I have been using Pegasus/Mercury for several years.  Mercury 4.52 using modules C SMTP, D Pop, X Task and  Pmail 4.41

In the last few days I have suddenly started getting in the core process window "Job has invalid or illegal from address" followed by "Notification discarded potential loop" messages.

The mails are then sticking in the Mercury\Queue folder.

I have deleted and recreated SYNONYM.MER from SYNONYM.TXT using fsynonym.exe without any benefit.

Your advice would be welcome.

Check Configuration | mercury core "Suppress validation of From field when processing mail"

Mercury usually attempts to validate that the "From" field of all mail it delivers is legal. This can sometimes cause problems if you receive mail from sites that use broken or faulty mail programs; if this is the case, you can suppress the validity check Mercury performs by checking this control.

Please, as an aside, make sure your postmaster alias (EG, as specified in Core Configuration) is a local username only; that that local username exists; and that, preferably, it not have forwarding enabled.

Cheers,

Thank you both for your replies.  The suppress validation of From field was unticked - I have now ticked it.

The username of pstmaster is POSTM which is a valid Pegasus mailbox.

I waited to see the effect of ticking the suppress validation of From and, sadly, my troubles are not at an end.

This morning  I am getting not known at this site errors.

User kenneth not known at this site - KENNETH is my Pegasus mailbox.  My ISP email address is  kenneth@mysubdomain.myISPdomain.co.uk

My ISP puts anything sent to my subdomain into the one mailbox and the principal job of Mercury should be to separate my mail from my wife's mail.

When the Postmaster tries to advise me of the kenneth not known error I then get - postmaster@mysubdomain.myISPdomain.co.uk not known at this site

Followed by User Electronic Postmaster <POSTM@mysubdomain.myISPdomain.co.u not known at this site = note the final k of uk is missing.

Finally I should mention that the synonym.mer file has two lines - one being kenneth@mysubdomain.myISPdomain.co.uk=kenneth and the other being similar with my wife's name in place of my own.

Further contributions welcome.

Looks like there is something wrong with the paths to the mailboxes or it can't read the pmail.usr file.  Try a system reboot.
