Hi all, first post here so please be gentle! [:)]
I have Mercury setup on my Windows Home Server, and after following Dave Marchant's guide can send and receive email through it with no major problems. What I would like to know is the best way to ensure that all mail coming into the server can be downloaded to both my desktop, and my laptop while I'm at home. I know I can leave my client PCs set to "leave mail on server", but given the size of my current PST files, I can imagine that this would lead to large files being left on the server which is maybe undesirable. Is this the only way, and then manually clear out the database files on the server periodically?
I can imagine that I'm not the first person to want to do this, but can't find a solution by searching these forums, so any and all help gratefully received.
Thanks,
Tim.
Setup the MercuryI IMAP server and then have the desktop and laptop mail client both work the mail via IMAP4. You did not say what mail client you were using but if you are using Pegasus Mail then WinPMail can point directly at the Mercury/32 mailboxes without the IMAP4.
With this setup you can download and delete what mail you you do not want to maintain on the server to the laptop and/or desktop without problems.
Thanks for the quick response.
I should have said my email client is Outlook 2003 on both PCs. At the moment I'm using POP and SMTP, not IMAP - any pointers on how to change everything around? This is in danger of getting waay above my head! [:S]
Thanks,
Tim.
With Mercury/32 turning on IMAP4 requires nothing more than using Configuration | Protocols and selecting the IMAP4 server. You restart Mercury/32 to load the protocol. There is no other required configuration of MercuryI however you can use Configuration | MercuryI to review the setting and setup the logs. You might need session logging during the client setup to identify the problems.
I do not have Outlook 2003 setup, but I do have Outlook 2002. The only thing you need to do in Outlook is to create an IMAP connection using Tools | Email accounts | Add a new email account. You select IMAP4 and then use the same username and password you use for POP3.

I've been itching to try this since he wrote it and it got posted to www.wegotserved.co.uk some time ago, but only just got time for it.

Ok, I think maybe I spoke too soon. This setup is now working perfectly for me across both PCs, and several domains apart from one thing. When I delete an email from within Outlook on either (or both) machines it doesn't actually get deleted, just crossed out and greyed out - I've looked for a solution, but to no avail - any more pointers? With IMAP4 the delete is is sent to the server burt the message is not actually deleted until the mailbox is closed. You can use Edit | Purge deleted message to get rid of them immediately when there is only one user connected via IMAP4 to the mailbox.
